I was having dinner with a european producer last night and he was talking about a 2-mic proximity ADR technique? I have never heard of such a thing. Been looping dialogue for years, and sometimes of course the actor may distance himself from the mic for a proximity effect, but 2 spaced mics on a sound stage for a single actor? Can anyone give me some details on this, or was this guy talking through his hat? thx Commpost

I've done a few 360 video mixes uaing Audio Ease 360pan suite, usually music or outdoor ambiences and the occasional presentation where talent is always visible. I'm gearing up to mix a slew of 360 videos that'll feature on-location interviews (usually a lav on the subject, the interviewer standing "behind" the camera to be painted out). I have the 360 panning sorted out but I am curious about the panning convention when the video cuts away from the subject while he/ she is still talking, making the interview audio effectively non-diegetic. If the cutaway happens mid-sentence do I leave the point-source panning in place or dissolve into non-headtracking audio like what a …

Trying to sync audio with video in FCP7. Video is at 50p. Timecode on audio is at 25. When I try to merge them, it works, but only partially. Like half. I know fcp is picky with timecode and length of audio files be displayed wrong because of the different timecodes in the timeline. When I set the audio file's timecode to be 50 fps, via modify-timecode, what it does is it doubles the amount of frames within the same time frame. So what in 25 fps was TC 2:01:01:24 is now 01:01:01:49 when it should still be ending with frame 24 and continue up. Sorry if this is confusing. I'll add screenshots later. What this means is that nothing really happens. Audio in the merg…

Ever since our media manager switched to Avid MC6, he has been having issues with my 744T's filenames. Basically, when he try to import into Avid, the filenames gets truncated and the metadata is completely absent. The files worked perfectly fine in MC 5.5 before. My 744T has the latest firmware. I have called Sound Devices and they are not aware of this issue. I'm pretty sure this is an Avid issue. However, that doesn't explain the fact that the files from my Fusion imports perfectly. I have tried to change the separators, renaming with different format, ommitting any special characters in the fie names on the 744T. It still doen't import properly into Avid. Any…

I have a question concerning the Surroundzone 2 plug in in ProTools 12HD. I would like to convert my A format recordings (SPS200) to B format using the Surround Zone 2 plug in. But unfortunately the surround zone plug in is not available as an Audio Suite version in ProTools. Are there any suggestions what batch convert software I can use (preferably within Pro Tools) to batch convert SPS200 A Format material to B format. I tried Sennheisers Ambeo software, but the result wasn't at all satisfying, presumably because of some proprietary format? Any suggestions some of the users on this board use? I'm using Harpex software to unpack B format to 5.1, so I'm not to keen …

Hi everyone, I was approached with a dialogue editing gig, but they are strictly Adobe CS workflow. As a Pro Tools guy, would I run into any learning curves while using Audition? Just in case, could it still accept omf outputs from Final Cut? Thanks Matt

"Anybody is a professional audio editor using this system." --OK, that's a bit over the top. And this idea still has a way to go before we'll see it in a product. But kinda interesting mashup of a few ideas:

End of an era maybe... "Scott Morris, the head of Adobe’s Creative cloud and creative suite team told me last week, this will be the only way to get access to its tools. The company will continue to sell CS6 for the time being, but it’s not clear for how long." http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/06/adobe-goes-all-in-with-subscription-based-creative-cloud-will-stop-selling-regular-cs-licenses-shrink-wrapped-boxes/

Hiyas! It’s truly been a while since I posted anything here it seems.. Anyway, nowadays I work in radio and there's just a different approach to everything, basically. One thing is background noise for example. Journalists like to keep things realistic, and therefore there's not a lot of recording separate backgrounds to add on later. If they want bg noise in their speakers/VOs they just record them in the environment they want. Sometimes at least. Most (99,9%) of the time they don't want the noise. Anyway. The other day this guy had made a similar VO, recorded in the street. But he got some facts wrong and needed to replace a few words. So …

Hello Gurus, I recently invested in five Adam A3X monitors and a Sub7 to build my 5.1 monitoring setup. Given that Sub7 does not have a dedicated connection for a LFE input, I am looking for some suggestions, and advice on how I can configure these monitors as a 5.1 surround setup. I use the UAD Apollo as my main interface to mix in the box.

Anyone have luck with ADX Trax Pro by Audionamix for isolating dialog?I have some work coming up that requires extraction from a premixed source. Apparently the originals were written over with background music and lost forever. Brilliant, I know...I told them I'd see what I can do. Usually use some spectral editing for short stuff but this app looks promising for working with larger material.

Hello again hive mind! Im thinking in upgrading the TV set in my studio but I´ve found myself wondering "How will I send audio from my alt monitor output to the tv when VGA + PC In combo is gone? (at least from 90% of the new tvs available) I´ve found splitters that come out of hdmi ports and then turn into wither components or even vga+ stereo mini jack audio but I haven´t been able to find the same kind of deal in the opposite direction (separate video and audio to a single hdmi). Most of the tv sets i´m interested in buying only have hdmi ports as inputs and some of them also have components. I currently have my alt monitor ou…

Do you guys have any favorite Altiverb tweaks you do in the dialog mix? I've been working on this feature and use it quite a big to help get the dialog cuts to blend better as well as giving it a better, more cinematic feel within the room. But I always wonder if there's something I could be doing to help make it even better so I thought I'd ask people smarter than me! Thanks for any advice you can share! John

Hello, Working on a doc that is partially set in rural Iraq / Afghanistan. As a lot of it is shot in 3D, I thought it would be nice to include some Ambisonic backgrounds as a layer in the mix. Thought I would see if anyone had any they would be willing to share!

Hello, Did a scene today with a practical SM58. Didn't amplify it to the room through the speaker until take 3. My question is, how easy is it to fake the speaker sound in post and make it sound realistic? We also had a boom in the room far from the practical, picking up the distant perspective and then the speaker sound once it was powered on. Second question is, how easy is it to make it match the aesthetic we got once we started using the speaker? To make takes 1-2 match the rest. Thanks, Ben

I did the sound for this short film shot on 16mm running at 24 fps. I set my recorder at 48KHz and 24 (apart from the first few shots, where it was left at 25 by mistake) there was no tc jamming, a clapperboard was used for all shots. Now a few months later I am told they can't sync none of the audio. It has already been transferred to beta and then to digital for Avid mxf. No syncing done at any of those stages. Now if I understand correctly the material is at 25 fps? I didn't even get a clear answer Is the audio to blame here? I know that there should have been guidelines by post as to audio framerate settings but there weren't. Just wondering what I can do…

Hey all, Just finishing up a project working with presumably 1/4" / reel archival Ram Dass recordings. The recordings are from over the years (but all very old), so: different tape machines, microphones, environments and subsequent reflections, and varying degree of ambient crowd noise. Overall I've gotten great results except for one in which the tape speed was unacceptably sped-up and therefore high-pitched. Using pitch and time correction of 92% I have RD back in his register, but with the slowdown, now he sounds gravely (or as the client keeps saying--robotic). I have done everything I know possible with EQ & comp / limt. etc, as well as trying ev…

I record dialogue all the time but I have never recorded music before and don't really know the first thing about it. As a hobby, I'm going to be recording some music I've written for an album. While it's strictly a hobby, I do want to end up with something that sounds at least semi-professional. I won't need to record more than 2 sources at a time, so I was looking at the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. Does anyone know if the preamps and A/D converter will help me achieve "(semi)-pro" quality recordings? Can I plug an electric guitar straight in and "amplify" it digitally in the computer/interface? I was looking into something like the SD USBPre or MixPre-D because of their…

So I've been working on a feature that had been print locked for a while now, and they decided to cut one entire scene (let's call this SceneA) and then, move another scene (SceneB from a different location to plug the hole where Scene A was. I asked for the In/out points on the timeline and the order (sequence) in which they made these moves. I'm assuming the timeline (frames) will shift when they delete Scene A, and again, when they Cut and move Scene B, so the exact IO points will be necessary in order to replicate what they did. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Ideally I'd like PT10 to behave more like a non-linear editor -- in mar…

Trying to help my brother with some post production mixing on his videos and just found out FCPX doesn't export OMF. Just curious if anyone has tried the www.x2pro.net software and how well it works between X and PT9/10. Also, is the LE version worth getting or should I jump to the Pro version at twice the price? Tried adding this question to a thread at gearslutz but my thread got moved over to a small sub-forum that doesn't get much action! Appreciate the feedback!
