Is this a growing trend? I've noticed it recently, particularly on some of the mainstream narrative films among this year's screeners: There seems to be a casual attitude towards exterior BGs. Some scenes are filled, others in the same film are just dialog with an occasional music stab. At first I thought it was to reflect the characters' internal states... but no, they're conversing actively about relatively unimportant (or unemotional) stuff. Many of these scenes are not through-scored, so it isn't to let the music show through. (I learned last night that Cambridge has absolutely nothing moving other than the principals, while New York is stuffed with CU tra…

I first noticed this peculiar (large) use of compression on dialogue, ambience and fx stems on "The Neon Demon" film, and since then I've seen/heard it on several films and tv series (Personal Shopper, Bates Motel, The Duke of Burgundy...) and more often in commercials and movie trailers where everything sounds "in your face". Anyone noticed that too?

Does anyone know if there's an option in Premiere to view poly file metadata, most importantly, track names? I I spent half of yesterday doing a bunch of scouring on the interwebs trying to help out an editor that isn't familiar with poly files (because I'm a nice guy) and it looks like there is not.... I have FCP and the track names that I add in to my SD 633 are plain as day. See screenshot below: Thanks!

Hey Everyone! So I noticed recently that when in Smart Tool mode, some times the Grabber tool (which is normally a 5 fingers outstretched hand) switches to what looks like a angled cupped hand? Does anyone know what this does AND ALSO how to turn it on/off? (mostly off). I noticed that when I click with that tool mode it draws a yellow line down into the region. I tried looking it up in the manual, and in online and can't seem to find anything related to it. Thanks! John

I am trying to move to using RME Totalmix directly for surround monitoring control with the RME Arc controller. Has anyone figured out a good configuration for this ? It seems much better in quality just connecting the monitors directly rather than using a hardware controller. I managed to get a mute group working for all outputs and a button toggles this. The volume dial can be used to control a fader group for all outputs with a recall for calibrated level. My issue so far I am trying to figure out. When I power on the speakers with the power conditioner there is now a loud pop, I could avoid having mute on the SPL active. I am trying to address this without …

I've done a few 360 video mixes uaing Audio Ease 360pan suite, usually music or outdoor ambiences and the occasional presentation where talent is always visible. I'm gearing up to mix a slew of 360 videos that'll feature on-location interviews (usually a lav on the subject, the interviewer standing "behind" the camera to be painted out). I have the 360 panning sorted out but I am curious about the panning convention when the video cuts away from the subject while he/ she is still talking, making the interview audio effectively non-diegetic. If the cutaway happens mid-sentence do I leave the point-source panning in place or dissolve into non-headtracking audio like what a …

Just over 30-seconds long. Dialogue Contour seems to be the thing. I guess IBC/AES-ish release? And there's at least one book coming. Complete with an Encyclopedia of Noise :-) https://www.halleonard.com/product/viewproduct.action?itemid=269473&lid=3&keywords=iZotope&subsiteid=1&

I've read everything I can find on neverclip but I'm still unsure about how the files are utilized in post. Once the file is written and saved as a .bwf is it ready to go through the post workflow or are there additional steps required to unlock the additional dynamic range? From the zax website: "NeverClip files areindustry standard Broadcast Wave files with extra iXML data included which canbe utilized by any post production system" Does this mean that there is an extra step required (with the ixml data) and do all DAW's support this process? Thanks in advance.

I recorded a 42 Track WavePoly file on a Pix970 but when post-production tries to import it into AVID it all show as routed to A-1 instead of A1, A2, A3..... and so forth. Any ideas what may be doing this?

I'm curious how many here are using the Zynaptiq plug ins? Specifically Unveil, Unfilter, and UnChirp. I've downloaded the trials and really didn't have as much success as I would have liked using these tools. I'm not blaming the software, its likely me not understanding exactly what I should be doing. I'm an Isotope 6 user and I'm fairly good at figuring things out. I searched and found an early thread with Jay Rose and one of the co founders of Zynaptiq which was useful. Jay's first reaction was about the same as mine I think. If anyone here has experience with these three plugins could you tell me how you learned them and if they're working well in your work fl…

Hello, I was wondering if any post audio pros could answer this. We re-edited a finished film from years back. For the re-edit we used the 5.1 stems: The 5.1 dialogue tracks The 5.1 background tracks The 5.1 FX tracks The 5.1 Music tracks So all 24 tracks were carried throughout the edit. Now my question is what is the procedure to create new master Stereo and 5.1 files? For the Stereo file is it as simple as Pan all L and Ls channels to the left Pan all R and Rs channels to the right Leave C channels as is and discard LFE then export? For 5.1 would you just mute all tracks except the Center ch…

I have some multitrack WAV audio delivered to me and I'm experiencing a weird issue regarding phase alignment. In Pro Tools I'm going through the audio and matching up the phase on the boom and lav tracks. I'm using the boom as the primary and matching the lavs to the boom. I'll sync up the phase on a clip at the start but then I'll move further down the clip and the phase will be out again! Its not consistent, sometimes its just a few sample forward, sometimes a few samples back, sometimes up to 1 or 2 milliseconds forward or back, all within the same clip recorded together in real-time. I know there is a delay involved with the wireless, but once synced I would expect t…

Hello again hive mind! Im thinking in upgrading the TV set in my studio but I´ve found myself wondering "How will I send audio from my alt monitor output to the tv when VGA + PC In combo is gone? (at least from 90% of the new tvs available) I´ve found splitters that come out of hdmi ports and then turn into wither components or even vga+ stereo mini jack audio but I haven´t been able to find the same kind of deal in the opposite direction (separate video and audio to a single hdmi). Most of the tv sets i´m interested in buying only have hdmi ports as inputs and some of them also have components. I currently have my alt monitor ou…

I have been using Ediload specifically using EDLs and EdiLoad to conform ProTools sessions. Everyone seems to be currently using Premiere which is an NLE that doesn’t have an option to “Subframe alignment to Broadcast Wav Start time.” ProTools places files on a sample level which can be up to 1 frame off with the guide track. Which can cause very minor sync issues and phasing with the guide track. This can obviously be fixed manually. But would love to have it batch corrected. Is there a way to batch correct this in ProTools?

OS - Windows 10 64 DAW - Reaper interface - Mix Pre 6 This is not a real review, I don't do post audio professionally, and will only use the Mix Pre for 1-2 input recordings. I haven't seen much of a discussion about the Mix Pre as an interface so figured I'd start one here to see what other people thought. I bought a Mix-Pre 6 a couple months ago to use as a back-up field recorder/small gear package for simple interview/small budget stuff when the full Nomad bag isn't necessary. I haven't used it for that purpose more than a few times, so I connected it to my PC and decided to give it a go as an interface while I don't need it, replaci…

Probably a bit OT here, but has anyone come across a Mac app that works with quicktime video files similar to the way Wave Agent creates sound reports from a folder of BWAVs? I'd like to dump a folder of h.264 Quicktime .mov files in it and end up with a list of the file names, and at least the timecode in and out points from the quicktime TC track - preferably in .csv format. Cheers, nick.

I have a question concerning the Surroundzone 2 plug in in ProTools 12HD. I would like to convert my A format recordings (SPS200) to B format using the Surround Zone 2 plug in. But unfortunately the surround zone plug in is not available as an Audio Suite version in ProTools. Are there any suggestions what batch convert software I can use (preferably within Pro Tools) to batch convert SPS200 A Format material to B format. I tried Sennheisers Ambeo software, but the result wasn't at all satisfying, presumably because of some proprietary format? Any suggestions some of the users on this board use? I'm using Harpex software to unpack B format to 5.1, so I'm not to keen …

Hiyas! It’s truly been a while since I posted anything here it seems.. Anyway, nowadays I work in radio and there's just a different approach to everything, basically. One thing is background noise for example. Journalists like to keep things realistic, and therefore there's not a lot of recording separate backgrounds to add on later. If they want bg noise in their speakers/VOs they just record them in the environment they want. Sometimes at least. Most (99,9%) of the time they don't want the noise. Anyway. The other day this guy had made a similar VO, recorded in the street. But he got some facts wrong and needed to replace a few words. So …
