End of an era maybe... "Scott Morris, the head of Adobe’s Creative cloud and creative suite team told me last week, this will be the only way to get access to its tools. The company will continue to sell CS6 for the time being, but it’s not clear for how long." http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/06/adobe-goes-all-in-with-subscription-based-creative-cloud-will-stop-selling-regular-cs-licenses-shrink-wrapped-boxes/

I am running PT8, M-Powered. When I open a new project, import audio files and then play back the recorded audio files all I hear is what sounds like a small two-stroke gas motor. I have tried opening various files on different new projects and this happens to all of them. It does not matter if I import with or without video or if I use a template or not. However if I open an old project the audio plays just fine. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? I have a short project that i have to edit for this week and I am in a bind if I cannot use ProTools. I would just upgrade to PT10 but I am in the middle of a longer project and do not want to…

I don't do it very often, but sometimes I convert BWAV files to mp3 for transcription. I have yet to find mp3 conversion software that will carry over timecode information from BWAV files into the mp3 tags. I know from experience that recording directly to mp3 from a Sound Devices recorder will spread all kinds of useful metadata-like information into mp3 tag fields. Timecode, track names, etc... But doing this after the fact via conversion software would be handy. Now that I've gone Nomad I'm curious to see how the mp3 recording option will handle metadata. It is yet-to-be-implemented currently. Actually, I'm going to HAT! Mark

I couldnt see a specific thread about Pluraleyes but I could see a lot of very sceptical posts about the softwares ability from around 2111/2012. I have worked with a lot of people (editors) who absolutely swear by it and when I do 5D work I can just give them the audio files and nothing else (it helps if times of day matches a bit) and I've not had wines or gripes. I did do one job here in ZA for an American company who insisted I got a big ass SD mixer (as well as top of the range everything which was hired at great expense) and we shot on some bigger Cannon cameras and the time code kept drifting and there is always the framerate issue. Now enough time has gone by for…

I've been lucky to be starting audio post on my first feature (very low budget), which is just over 80mins. It is a drama between three main characters, but there's a few more. I'm already over a month into it and I've already been delayed significantly by ADR editing, although that is part of the process. Just looking for some perspective on how much time to give a project, when the Director/Producer's one "sound designer" (me) is likened to a whole audio-post department. Tell me if this is not unusual? Firstly I know there are many variables that will be affecting the size of sound post teams. Budget and work load are the main ones. In this case, it is …

Hello, Trying to figure out the best, cleanest way to export an OMF from Premiere to Pro Tools. I'm noticing that due to how Premiere tracks handles audio files, even mono files, will end up with a Left and Right duplicate. So if you have 6 mono tracks, you'll end up with 12 tracks in the OMF (each original track duplicated with a left and right channel). This not only creates more neadless clutter in the timeline but it also increases the file size, thereby making encapsulated OMFs hit their 2gig limit much sooner. Does Pro Tools have an issue linking files from a referenced OMF vs an Encapsulated one? A potential workaround is to open the omf in Audition, delete th…

LTC sync software 1 2

Hi. I'm new here. I'm looking for feedback on an idea I'm developing. I'm working on a free, open-source app that syncs files based on LTC. If you're familiar with Tentacle Studio or Tentacle Timecode Tool, my app addresses a similar need, but is cross-platform and free. I'm in early stages of development. I am looking for feedback on how the software works in the real world, so I can focus my efforts on what works for real people. LTCsync runs on Windows, MacOS and Linux. You can download a build for your OS from https://github.com/arikrupnik/ltcsync/releases/tag/0.1.1 Project home is https://github.com/arikrupnik/ltcsync

Avid has a new CEO as of yesterday. Earnings announcement later this month. "Could Hernandez’ appointment, made by the company’s Board of Directors, spur a turnaround at Avid, manufacturer of the industry standard DAW (by a landslide) and the crucial core of many, many music studios, film and TV audio post suites, and live venues? Well maybe – but seeing how Avid is steadily sinking, there may not be a whole lot Hernandez can really do." http://www.sonicscoop.com/2013/02/11/avid-switches-ceos-will-louis-hernandez-turn-it-around/

Ok, I'm sure this noob question will generate a few smug comments from the one "in the know", but none the less I will ask - is that kind of heavily processed (to my ears) dialogue sound as in the link below, that seems agressive in a controlled way, partly caused by the use of compression? Do you use compressors in dialogue mixing - or do you rely on automation...? I am assisting dialogue mix at the moment and my edit + preliminary dialogue mix is much more "polite", I don't get this midrangey "bite", but I don't use compressors... also - is subtle noise gating usual in dialogue mix? I wonder what combination of processes causes this sort of sound behaviour…

What are some of your favorite plugins for post production, and are any free? I’m getting back into post but since my absence a lot has changed. There are obvious ones like izotope but I’d like to see what the consensus is on others.

I dont know how many of you have experienced this, but I have a feeling it is becoming more and more frequent as productions hire people with less experience to save on cash, since budgets are just numbers pulled out of a hat (in the indie world) and rates are set by producers.... anyway, heres the rant: I dont usually do post because on an indie level, production is basically just asking for favors by the time principal photography is done. But every now and then I will do--work on a project if I have time, approve the production audio (I will not do salvage jobs), and like the project enough. The last film I did post on, the guys really knew their stuff, and even ad…

Hi, I'm a boom operator in L.A. and post sound is outside of my experience. A friend in NYC recently shot a 20 minute short for about $30k. She was able to get an excellent cast of well known NYC television and theater actors and got a good DP who brought his crew on so things went well on the 3-4 day shoot which was in one location. The picture is locked and now she needs to post the sound. She had budgeted $1000 and asked me if it was possible to get an experienced person for that budget. Frankly I have no idea. Any advice that I can pass on to her would be much appreciated. Thanks, Richard Bullock

On some shows like Breaking Bad and True Detective, you can sometimes hear a high frequency tone on top of the dialog track, as if it was some kind of carrier tone. It also follows the same gate as the dialog so it must be a technique. Does anyone know what this is?

Ok, so I'm not an editor and i don't want to be one. I'm 3 weeks in to a 3.5 week show and suddenly there's a flurry of emails from post telling me that all my tracks are distorted and overmodulated. We check the files here, playing back through my machine and also playing back DIT files and dailies. Result?? Zero defect and the highest level appears to peak at roughly -5db. In am recording on Zaxcom Deva V, 48k, 24bit, 23.976fps, polyphonic wav with -20db headtone. Files played back on my machine are perfect. Files sent to DIT are transcoded and exported through Davinci. Files played back from DIT are perfect. Post advises yesterday that they are usin…

So when I do post audio I usually find that what chair I sit in is usually more important than probably what program I'm using. If I don't feel comfortable and in the right posture then I find that I'm getting up more and taking more breaks and can barely hop back in the seat. I'm 6'7 so for me I'd probably need an orthotics and chiropractor examine my work space to fit it for me...luckily I don't do as much post these days. One of my first jobs I was in the saddle for several hours every day and realized that the padded fold out chair I'd been sitting on was actually brusing my lower ribs. It was such a weird feeling I thought I had kidney failure or something, but low a…

Trying to help my brother with some post production mixing on his videos and just found out FCPX doesn't export OMF. Just curious if anyone has tried the www.x2pro.net software and how well it works between X and PT9/10. Also, is the LE version worth getting or should I jump to the Pro version at twice the price? Tried adding this question to a thread at gearslutz but my thread got moved over to a small sub-forum that doesn't get much action! Appreciate the feedback!

Does anyone know of a piece of software or plug in that allows you to edit audio using a spectral view rather than a waveform view?

Hello all, seeking for a little advice on reality stuff: I'm currently editing a documentary I shot over the course of the last 1.5 yrs., my first own project with funding, we had a little team, but I also had to do some one-man-band stuff, with the result of: either sound or picture are good, haha - but I'm positive about the coverage, 35 hrs of logged material, Interview transcripts are done, currently in the very early editing stages of the "easier" scenes. Getting along decently. One of my headaches is, of course... sound. But this time the other way around, as in: On the shorts I usually do audio post for, I try and go by the book (namely Purcell's) as much as I…

Hello All, The DOP wants to test shoot a special effect in camera by shooting at several different frame rates 18, 15 and 12.5 f.p.s. What is unusual for me is that I have been requested to record the dialogue beforehand and replay the dialogue also at 18, 15 and 12.5 f.p.s. Essentially the actors will be miming to their own playback off speed. The DOP is going for the jilted jittery effect as the scene is a flash back. My problem is playing back the dialogue at the different frame rate. Protools LE 6.2.2 is the version I have and I can use Protools very basically to set up sessions, record and playback. If I was to use Protools to change the frame rates, the …

Howdy everyone, So I am working on a post project for a feature and I imported my AAF/OMF data from a file exported by Media Composer/Symphony (not sure which). The re-recorded ADR timing is out of sync so i was going to use elastic audio to stretch/compress the takes so they fit better to the movement of their mouths. So, I made separate ADR tracks and copied my ADR takes over to new tracks and tried to enable elastic audio. It gives me this message: Could not complete your request because an audio file on the playlist is unsupported for Elastic Audio Processing as it is read only... Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Any sug…

Hello everyone, First-time topic! Pretty new member. Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in, but I thought you guys could point me in the right direction at the least (for example, would gearslutz be better? I'm not too aware of post-production sites). Yes I know everybody has this pipe dream of using phase inversion to fix things, but that doesn't mean we can't try! So, I'm doing sound for a low-budget reality show. Yes, it's trouble. They wanted me to record sound in a noisy nightclub. Both boom and lavs pick up quite a lot of ambient noise from the DJ blaring the usual radio standards. I am aware of noise reduction tools su…

I am currently cautiously looking at increasing my post capabilities and the thought occurred to me to bone up my DAW controller. I currently use an Alesis MasterControl at home. For the price, it is quite nice and feels like a solid piece of kit. Generally, for ADR and mixing, we'll either be at the main studio or on set. At the studio, we have an SSL4000E/G, a great console, but of course not a control surface. What I find that I do, if I need to do any type of moderate or major editing, I do that all at home, and then bring in the client for a final attended mix at the studio at which point I'm just mixing stems together for the final client approved print. We're…
