Curious if someone might help me understand the pro's n con's of OMF vs AAF imports in pro tools. I have been using OMF for ever out of habit. Always encapsulated to keep things organized, and it would work perfect for my purposes except for a few occasions where the material is larger size and I would request separated - but this made things slightly difficult where I would have to manually connect the data which was a bit time consuming but worked in the end. Recently an editor I have been working with was sending me AAF's. Worked extremely well although contained a video track that would give me problems but I would just skip it on import and bring in video manually wh…

Considering LOW BUDGET feature and documentary film making, what are the main differences considering post and/or audio post specifically? I'm wondering specifically about the distribution process. Does M&E take place in doc's as well? I have post lo budget feature experience but not as much in the doc realm. So differences in: Dialogue edit (obviously no ADR) SFX (Most PFX I assume) Design(Mostly PFX again.) M&E and then to distribution. Just wondering what requirements are different between the two....like does Germany for example accept a doc on different quality control requirements than a feature...I assume it does, but I have no idea. What iss…

I have a few projects that I recorded in surround (4 channel, L, R, Ls, Rs) and I would like to export them to a format that can be listened to on stereo headphones, preserving the surround effect. I would do this from Logic if possible. Any rcommendations for plugins and such to do the job?

Hey all, I'm about to start work on a small documentary. I'm doing a preliminary mix so the producer can send it out to a minor festival. I'm nearly positive that they will do some revisions based on their feedback, which means my original mix will be out of whack with whatever newer version they come up with. How do you all deal with large changes? How do you maintain what you've already done and integrate that into the new edit? It seems to me that you'd have to start from scratch. I'm using Pro Tools v8. Sorry if this seems like an elementary question, but I've never had to deal with wholesale changes, only minor substitutions here and there. Thanks in adva…

Hello everyone, I'm working on an environmental documentary mix and the editor/director did not include all the audio feeds into the timeline edit and resulting AAF. So I am trying to reconstruct the edited version of audio and replace the Lav Feed with the Boom. So I have all the original source RAW interviews that were recorded on location copied onto Temp tracks in the project. Is there any way to "match" by waveforms in Pro Tools 12HD? This would be similar to the way PluralEyes and Premiere Pro matches audio by analyzing waveforms. Ideally, I'd like to pull up some sort of plugin window, select my "Source" samp…

My question is about using plugins, I do mostly sound on a film set, and rarely I do some post-work for small projects, this helped me a lot to improve my job during the shootings. I've realized how easy it could be making a mess when cleaning up dialogues and mixing (mostly doing it at the same time). I have mixed in the past mostly music and carried with me that background. High levels, transients massive, using compressors, never issues about noises and need to clean rumbles, clothes rustle because everything was recorded in perfect situations. But when I approached audio film post everything was more complicated. I used plug ins on the single tracks and on the stem…

What software are you using to edit audio files while retaining its scene/take/notes etc… metadata? Logic is my standard for doing audio mixing and editing and I've been a user for about 10 years, but I'd like to do some audio cleanup on some location sound files and Logic strips that info. I simply want to edit using the noise reduction, EQ, and compression plugins that I typically use, then export to a new file with the same metadata as the original file. Haven't needed it until now. Thanks.

I don't normally watch TV, but over the last few months I've been using Netflix. Watching Bones, Lie To Me, and Supernatural quite a bit and noticing a few things. Biggest thing is the level of dialogue vs. level of music. Intro and ending music pretty much blows everything else away. Transitional music gets a bit loud too. Point is I find myself turning my master volume up and down quite a bit. I've considered that this may be due to the acoustics of my room or possibly a psychoacoustic effect but I've also heard several other people say the same things about their experiences at their own homes. I have to wonder if the post mixers on shows like mixing this way or if …

Sunk original audio (file named by take) with video file. Merged the clip and the audio file now takes on the video file name. Edited the film. Now the Post house, needs the original audio file names for all the audio files used in the edit. Is there any way to get the audio used in the edit to revert back to its original name? Maybe there's some 3rd party program that can help with this?

Ever since our media manager switched to Avid MC6, he has been having issues with my 744T's filenames. Basically, when he try to import into Avid, the filenames gets truncated and the metadata is completely absent. The files worked perfectly fine in MC 5.5 before. My 744T has the latest firmware. I have called Sound Devices and they are not aware of this issue. I'm pretty sure this is an Avid issue. However, that doesn't explain the fact that the files from my Fusion imports perfectly. I have tried to change the separators, renaming with different format, ommitting any special characters in the fie names on the 744T. It still doen't import properly into Avid. Any…

Here's the issue: I recently worked on a show with another sound guy. We each had a couple of people wired, we each sent sound to camera wirelessly via Zaxcom. Multiple times a day I checked my levels. Sent tone, -20, mixed on my 552 between -4 and +4. Now it's come to my attention my audio is extremely low. They're cutting on FCP. His audio is fine, mine is not. The camera's were XD cams. I also recorded a backup on my 552. I've brought the files into ProTools, and the level's are consistently in the green - very rarely reaching pre-clipping in the yellow. He did not record a backup, and used a different mixer (which one escapes me now). The edit…

Hey Guys and Gals! So I'm editing this feature and I keep getting "Video Engine was unable to stop." Error. I'm able to remedy it easily by closing the session and relaunching Pro Tools but it's damned annoying to do. It seems that it happens when I click into the timeline someplace, but my hand isn't perfectly steady, so I accidentally make a micro selection of a tiny tiny region. I went up AVID's support site found a few postings where others have been fuming about this issue not being addressed back even in PT11? I didn't want to waste my "1 per month" tech support ticket with AVID on an issue that is known and not yet fixed so I wanted to…

I need to vent a tad... I worked on a pilot pitch last December, and yesterday, the director sent me a link to the final product. As I watched the 30-minute episode, I despaired at how awful it sounded: every single off-camera line was off-mic; not one line taken during the close-up coverage was edited in. There was also electrical hum from ballasts and lights that I couldn't get turned off during the shoot, and added backgrounds were often drowning out lines. The edit sounded like an indie picture lock or short does BEFORE the sound edit. I kept thinking what a shame it was that the director, who spent 50k of his own money, and who has one small feature with …

Hi Folks, I need to recommend a mixing studio in LA ( but might also work in NY too) for a prod company that I'm gonna be doing the sound design this time. Can you guys recommend me a nice place if possible with a DFC console that is affordable for an European (witch means most of the times the same ) kind of a low budget movie. Thanks!! From : CURRENT thread... since this is an edit question... I posted here too.. Quick question for those with edit experience... I know different Edit programs probably open up tracks from a Poly file differently... Adobe premier pops them open from what I know in order of PRESENT tracks... If 3 is not used for example they all open up 1-12 lets say into the next open slot.. 4 becomes 3 if there is NO 3 recorded on a take... it bumps up and fills the empty slot... At least this is what I am told... When we use this app (Sound Report writer) for putting together our reports, we have the option of listing tracks as 1-12 for example.... and simply …

Hello, Did a scene today with a practical SM58. Didn't amplify it to the room through the speaker until take 3. My question is, how easy is it to fake the speaker sound in post and make it sound realistic? We also had a boom in the room far from the practical, picking up the distant perspective and then the speaker sound once it was powered on. Second question is, how easy is it to make it match the aesthetic we got once we started using the speaker? To make takes 1-2 match the rest. Thanks, Ben

I was having dinner with a european producer last night and he was talking about a 2-mic proximity ADR technique? I have never heard of such a thing. Been looping dialogue for years, and sometimes of course the actor may distance himself from the mic for a proximity effect, but 2 spaced mics on a sound stage for a single actor? Can anyone give me some details on this, or was this guy talking through his hat? thx Commpost

I would like to know how do you use reverb on dialog tracks, mostly in TV series. Do you send to Mono or Stereo reverbs? How many reverbs do you start with in your mixing template, which ones? Do you design custom patches for specific locations through all the series? Which reverb plugins or hardware do you like to use for this purpose and why? Any tips and tricks related to the use of reverb in dialog tracks? Whatever information you want to share on this topic will be welcome and I'm sure it will result very, very helpful. Thanks for your time.

So I just picked up a projectmix i/o for my studio and was wondering how others place their mixer in the perfect position so that they have easy access to the faders, buttons, and such. Any suggestions/pictures? I was thinking about an articulated arm or something that can swing in and out but I wondered how practical that might or might not be, soooo, I turned to the forum to see what others did to make it work better for themselves? Any and all suggestions would be very much appreciated! John (jgbsound) Oh and happy holidays to all!

Hello Everyone I am a Pro Tools user that mixes primarily TV spots and corporate videos. I have done 3 feature-length projects, and I am now looking to step my game up to the world of Pro Tools HD and learning to mix in 5.1. I will be using a new mac pro 6-core with PT HD Native (connected via Thunderbolt) along with the HD omni interface. I have a big question as to which speaker system I should select for monitoring my mixes. For stereo mixes, I have been using Yamaha HS-50m's, and they have been great for me. The EQ response is nice and flat, and my mixes always translate well. If I get a good mix on the yamaha's, the mix sounds appropriate from every playback …

I've been Recording with nomad for well over a year. I'm hearing from post that the file names that I have been entering methodically do not show up on the file itself when imported. I know they show up in the report, have I been wrong to have thought that this data is displayed on the track itself? All that shows up is: S1,S2,S3 etc...im assuming that means "source". I'm delivering polywave, the individual track names are the same as the main polywave file, in most cases the date, plus the "S1". Will the track names appear if I deliver mono?
