Howdy everyone, So I am working on a post project for a feature and I imported my AAF/OMF data from a file exported by Media Composer/Symphony (not sure which). The re-recorded ADR timing is out of sync so i was going to use elastic audio to stretch/compress the takes so they fit better to the movement of their mouths. So, I made separate ADR tracks and copied my ADR takes over to new tracks and tried to enable elastic audio. It gives me this message: Could not complete your request because an audio file on the playlist is unsupported for Elastic Audio Processing as it is read only... Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Any sug…

Video editor looking to do a passable cleanup on an audio track only for the purpose of handing in a rough. They gave me horrible audio, with noise and the mic was probably laying on the ground in a corner, def not where it was supposed to be. I'll launch Protools and see if I can give myself a refresher. Bad audio is bad audio, but I wanted to see if anyone can recommend a plug-in or two that I should focus my time on as I dig around in there to try to give it a little bump. Not looking to take up too much of anyone's time, would appreciate any recommendations on a plug-in I should try. Please be polite. I don't have time to search the boards here to try t…

Has anyone else noticed that when you pull up the global clip gain (Shft-Ctrl + -), after you make gain adjustments, sometimes the undo doesn't function? T Sometimes it works, other times ...nada. I was doing a bunch of dialog gain adjustments and did about 10 of them, changed my mind and decided to try and undo them. No luck Chuck. Not sure if it's just me or if others have noticed. OH and btw; I'm using a windows system.

Just wondering, if I upgrade from Protools 8 to Protools10 in the middle of a project, will I be able to import that project into Protools 10 and finish it there? It is a thirty+ minute film with a video track and lots of audio tracks. I have most of the dialogue edit completed but have everything else to do yet. Is this possible? Is it a good or bad idea? Thanks Bob

Hey guys, a quick question. I'm working in an animated series and we had a few re-records for lines. So I created a new folder and copied the new takes into it. But when I pull up either the workspace or project browser the folder and files don't show up. I can search for the files because I know the naming convention. But i can't figure out how to refresh the file list. Any suggestions?

I am running PT8, M-Powered. When I open a new project, import audio files and then play back the recorded audio files all I hear is what sounds like a small two-stroke gas motor. I have tried opening various files on different new projects and this happens to all of them. It does not matter if I import with or without video or if I use a template or not. However if I open an old project the audio plays just fine. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? I have a short project that i have to edit for this week and I am in a bind if I cannot use ProTools. I would just upgrade to PT10 but I am in the middle of a longer project and do not want to…

I posted this in the computer section also, I hope that's okay, if not, please delete. I have a question for the post production / computer experts here. Our facility runs two ProTools HDX suites for audio post for Television. We mix in stereo only. The audio systems used to be synched to house black with an AVID Sync HD and the video satellite (AVID Media Composer with Mojo DX I/O) is also synched to house black . Since our workflow is entirely file based now I’m not sure if I still need to use the Sync HD and here’s the reason why I’m asking. We bought an IZ Technologies RADAR Studio for our A suite about 2 years ago. It replaced an old MacPro. Tha…

[if you think that I should post this in a different section, please let me know] This question is more for people who are on-set only type folk... How often do you find that production comes to you asking either for you personally to do the sound design and mix or for a recommendation from you for good people to go to? If you are working on a union gig, does that mean that the post has to be union as well? I do post audio at an independent sound house in NYC, and am trying to elevate the quality of movies that I am working on. I know that many of the folks on this forum are working on very interesting/quality content, but I had always assumed that the…

Hello, I am currently doing production sound for a indie feature set in the fifties in an African city. Obviously we struggling to avoid plane, (chinese) motorbikes, modern cars, AC fans, water pumps, amplified call for prayer, to mention only the quotidian ones... I do not think I will get a chance to record enough stereo ambient sound as I usually do because of these issues. I have a fairly number of years of experience in film but this is my first non contemporary era film. So my question is can we rely on post only to re-create ambient sounds, assembling isolated sounds, to get credible soundscapes for the diverse scenes set in town? What a…

Hello, I was wondering if any post audio pros could answer this. We re-edited a finished film from years back. For the re-edit we used the 5.1 stems: The 5.1 dialogue tracks The 5.1 background tracks The 5.1 FX tracks The 5.1 Music tracks So all 24 tracks were carried throughout the edit. Now my question is what is the procedure to create new master Stereo and 5.1 files? For the Stereo file is it as simple as Pan all L and Ls channels to the left Pan all R and Rs channels to the right Leave C channels as is and discard LFE then export? For 5.1 would you just mute all tracks except the Center ch…

I hear a lot of people complaining about having to wait for a bounce, here is a tip. Instead of real time bouncing, record your master to an audio track. If you make a change, you can just destructive record the change, then you don't have to bounce again. When you are done, just export the audio file on the track with the settings you want. I have been doing this for several years with no complaints.

I have a bunch of polyphonic wavs from production with 8 tracks for a 2 person stationary scene. Some mics sound inferior than others ( I do want to keep all the tracks in the end) just for the offline edit that amount of tracks per clip makes it really cumbersome. I'd like to reduce the number of tracks to the strongest/cleanest ones (which seem to be the first 3), then sync....or I could sync first, then reduce. I just want to make sure that by working this way, post sound will still be able to conform to the 8 track original wav file. Has anyone done this with Wave Agent or some other program? Are there issues conforming to all tracks in the original f…

Howdy everyone, Soooo, I'm still working on that WWII movie and am pretty close to completing. however, I just hit a scene with some extreme closeups and I can hear the camera's motor/film sound pretty well. I seem to remember back in film school they used a blimp/barney to dampen the sound but I'm pretty sure they didn't use one on the shoot. I've created (more like hacked together) some Room Tone so I can cut in and out between dialog bits, but it feels clunky. Then I got thinking about it more and was wondering what the big post guys do when they want to remove the camera's mechanical sound? Short of ADR which I suspect the director would probably no…

Hi all, I'm currently helping a friend out editing sound for his short film and there is a couple of scenes shot on and around a beach, we are struggling as one of the actresses speaks quite quietly and is conflicting with the sound of the rough sea and waves, just wondering if anyone knows a fixable solution to either lower the background noise of the sea, effects in audition or premiere that might be helpful or how to raise her voice without raising the full track so it doesn't conflict as much, ADR isn't an option really so it's got to be something we can fix In the edit if we can. Thanks in advance

I'm trying to flesh out my ensemble of post mixing software(s) to create as professional a final mix as possible. The list I use so far is okay but there is something obviously missing. Do you guys have other suggestions that you know are used by the big post studios to create smooth beautiful mixes? I'm pretty good at dialog editing, music arranging and fx editing but the re-recording for final mix has always been problematic. Here's what I have been using: Altiverb Protools Video Production Toolkit Bias' Repli-Q (and the Master collection's EQs) Sound Soap Pro 2.x

Doing some audio post workflow tests with an editor using Davinci Resolve 11 and Final Cut Pro. Production shot some tests using SD 664 and BM Ursa. Fed tc from SD to slate and Ursa. I was supplied with a copy of all the original source audio. In Resolve the editor synced the 664 source audio files to the Ursa's RAW video clips. All synced as it should. He then exported the video (as proxies) and synced audio for use in FCP. On the FCP timeline everything is in sync but the audio has now been renamed to their associated video clips' titles rather than retaining the source audio files' names (scene#, take#). They sent me an xml file of a rough edit but of course…

Sunk original audio (file named by take) with video file. Merged the clip and the audio file now takes on the video file name. Edited the film. Now the Post house, needs the original audio file names for all the audio files used in the edit. Is there any way to get the audio used in the edit to revert back to its original name? Maybe there's some 3rd party program that can help with this?

I am trying to move to using RME Totalmix directly for surround monitoring control with the RME Arc controller. Has anyone figured out a good configuration for this ? It seems much better in quality just connecting the monitors directly rather than using a hardware controller. I managed to get a mute group working for all outputs and a button toggles this. The volume dial can be used to control a fader group for all outputs with a recall for calibrated level. My issue so far I am trying to figure out. When I power on the speakers with the power conditioner there is now a loud pop, I could avoid having mute on the SPL active. I am trying to address this without …

I know this one seems pretty obvious, but I would like to know what are the duties of a Supervising Dialog Editor. Of course he has the responsability to observe other Dialog Editors work and keep the quality as high as possible giving them advice, and providing them with tools and techniques that will help them to do their work better. I also understand that a Supervising Dialog Editor is responsible to be in constant communication with the production team in order to give them feedback and letting them know what are the needs at Post or what can be improved. However, I would really like to know with as much detail as possible about the specific duties of Sup…

So I've SPL'd the monitors in my room but now, I would like to calibrate the frequency response of my speakers in my studio. I'm using the Yamaha SM series monitors in a 5.1 setup and was wondering how you guys tweak highs/mids/lows so it's tuned appropriately for your work area? I'm assuming you need a spectrum analyzer, a decent mic, a tone generator and a need for a more honest representation of what your mix will sound like. Is it as simple as sending out tone from the tone generator in Protools, looking at it on the spectrum analyzer as you shift frequencies and tweak the low/mid/high switches on the speakers? Or is there some other special way to tune it? …

Hey, This is a repost of a topic from the General Discussion section of the site. I was wanting a take on this from a post engineer's perspective. I have been on more than one shoot for a commercial recently where a particular AD in town has refused to get room tone at the end of the shoot day saying it is because, "Everyone would kill her if we stop for that at the end of the day." This after I asked for it earlier in the day. Admittedly, this translates to either, "I want to go home and don't care," or "I have absolutely no control of my set". But, this brings up the topic, how often do you get room tone from set? Do you ever get it on 30 second comme…

My workflow as a video producer to finish audio is to round trip audio from premiere or FCPX to audition or logic or protools and from there send it to Isotope RX4. I'm fairly new to RX4 so I'm wondering: If I open an audio/video mpeg4 file directly into RX4 can I save it back INTO the mp4 AV file intact, or does it become only an audio file? Same question goes for Audition or protools? Right now I have a 1.5 hour video that needs audio leveling and some spectral repair. It seems faster to just do it all in RX4. I just don't understand what an audio editor does to the video portion of the file. It seems like I don't have all the same tools when using RX4 as a plugi…

Hello, I wanted to know if anyone works with plugins izotope Online Mode? I mean plugins such as Dereverb Denoise? I downloaded the demo version for testing and the plugins I mentioned above barely work on my computer. i want to buy a new bundle of plugins for cleaning noises, and I wonder how powerful my computer needs to be to open at least five plugins such as Dereverb and Denoise... Thank you for your help.
