  1. Apple isn't exactly a byword for quality, more a triumph of marketing. There are many smartphones that contain user-replaceable batteries, Apple just choose to house theirs in a case designed to be as thin as possible (no doubt to win the "thin-ness" war) and therefore without a removable cover. I've just had a look on Nagra's website. There's some very nice gear on there and no doubt they have a deserved reputation for quality, but there's also a fair few products that seem to be not much more than rebadged Chinese dictaphones, so perhaps they're not the company they once were.
  2. Yes, these things cost money to develop, but £500 for that?
  3. Considering the input problems people have experienced with the Amira (including myself) it probably doesn't work...
  4. First you'd have to get past the inevitable delay that Bluetooth transmission causes. Standard latency is around 150ms. I know there's no way I could stand that. Best is around 40ms with aptX, but that's a frame of video and still far too much. Infra-red headphones might be a better bet.
  5. Their product doesn't work very well when stopping the stupid music that instantly began to play through my speakers. I don't even bother to read websites like that, I just close and move on.
  6. Well yes, but at least I can use it for other things. And it'll also be a lot cheaper.
  7. You mean if the cable pictured breaks, you need a whole module (and cables) to temporarily replace it? Not a great idea if so, since cables like that are prone to failure.
  8. All Sony cameras (that I'm aware of) have that status button. I generally set everything as it should be in the input and output menus and then hit status (use the scroll control to find the right screen) to set levels. I wish they'd just put some proper audio meters on the back though.
  9. Update. I did a three camera shoot with these today, all very excited, different people running around doing different things. Synced all the cameras as best I could in the morning, but only one FS7 had the TC back end. So I moved the back onto each camera and set TC. Halfway through the day, the camera that retained the TC back end had kept sync perfectly. One camera without the back end lost about 3 seconds. The other lost about 4 minutes. So my recommendation is, if you find you're doing a shoot with one or more of these cameras, absolutely insist that each camera has its own back end. Anyway, all I could do was get the three cameramen to shoot the TC display on my Nomad to attempt to show the editor roughly how far out each camera was. Fortunately, the multi-camera material (where we were all filming the same thing) should be one or two takes only and very simple to sync back up. I suppose I could have fed TC from my ERX2TCD's into a spare audio input, but truth is I don't have a cable that goes from minijack to XLR and if I'm honest, I don't plan to buy one either.
  10. I wonder the same of Tram TR50s. I have quite a few that sound a little different. I've often wondered if the mesh gets a bit "icky" with dust and other stuff, changing the audio.
  11. If you think about what it costs to get a decent sounding mono radio channel up and running, and then double that figure, and then remove digital from the equation - I think you have your answer.
  12. I've used ch38 right across Europe with no problems apart from France, where for some reason, large crowds of spectators reduced my range to about 10 metres. I always try to follow local regulations but it can be very difficult to get official guidance. So I usually rock up, search the internet to see what's what, and see how I go.
  13. It sounds to me as though Sound Devices have said to a French dealer, "yes you're the only company who will be given units to sell in France", said the same thing to a German dealer, and given both the idea that because of such exclusivities, neither should sell outside their country. The real test is for a couple of enterprising people to start making phone calls asking about prices in and outside of these countries.
  14. Any suggestion that dealers in Europe aren't allowed to export to other countries in the EU sounds very, very illegal.
  15. I have two sets of Beyer headphones, DT48s and DT300s. The latter are fantastic in noisy environments but both sets have one thing in common - if you even look sideways at them, they fall to bits.
  16. Had it checked today, it was indeed wired incorrectly. It's all good now, thanks for the advice.
  17. The price is almost irrelevant. They're a product designed to promote the brand, nothing more. They'll get people talking about Sennheiser and hopefully will persuade some to buy more Sennheiser gear. I think they look very nice though, I'd certainly like to own some.
  18. Well looking at the wiring, compared to another mic I have, the red and black connectors are inverted. Shield goes to the same pin. Another two pins are shorted on each connector. So I guess it's biassed incorrectly?
  19. I've used TR-50s for years, I have plenty in my bag, including a brand new white one I bought 1-2 years back. I've never used it until today, so never noticed this before (I did a quick test when I bought it but nothing more). Basically, it sounds a bit crap. Very little bass, and not much top end. Completely dissimilar to the normal black TR-50s I have. Useable audio, but not pleasant to listen to. I had to jump in a couple of minutes into the interview and change it. Has anyone else had a problem like this? It's a bit late now for me to take it back to the dealer for a swap, so I was thinking I'd contact Tram to see what they say.
  20. I use an NP1 into a little shoe. Out of the shoe comes a normal flying hirose. I plug that hirose into one leg of a y-splitter cable. The base of the Y goes to the mixer, so that's always powered no matter what happens. The other leg goes into one of these: http://www.audioroot.fr/product/vmdbox-hrs/ The outputs of that supply whatever else I'm powering, which at the moment is two Lectro SRa receivers. The audioroot box allows me to quickly turn the radios on or off, and the switch is protected (like putting a car into reverse gear) so it can't be knocked accidently.
  21. I'm not sure I'd bother, IIRC the last time I worked on an Amira I couldn't get it to line up properly, even with the inputs turned to zero. There seems to be a hardware issue on those cameras.
  22. I've never had an issue with rechargeables. The Lectro SR gives you plenty of warning of battery level, when the icon flashes = change battery.
  23. The sticky residue is easily removed with lighter fluid and a rag.
  24. Well camera batteries are always called a "camera battery", so I'd just call these "sound batteries".
  25. > 6 hours without AC. Must be a fancy cart if it has aircon.
