  1. The Rolling Stones are on my radio today, in honor of Charlie Watts' 74th birthday.
  2. Steve's obituary and details of the memorial service on June 6 can be found here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/chicagotribune/obituary.aspx?n=steven-jones&pid=174963397&fhid=2180 Best regards, Jim
  3. Happy 70th birthday to Gary Brooker.
  4. Thank you, Jeff. And thanks for the site update. Helm truly turned lemons into lemonade. He sought to recover from the double whammy of bankruptcy and the loss of his home and studio to fire with the house concert series that came to be known as the Midnight Ramble. He dealt with cancer, the loss of his voice and the tribulations of aging added to the side effects of his treatments pretty publicly. He changed his grip on the drumsticks, let his band sing for him when he couldn't and won three Grammys in the process of dying with dignity. I highly recommend Ain't In It For My Health. It's flawed but truthful. JG
  5. Americana music icon Levon Helm would have turned 75 today.
  6. Bob Mugge has made his unreleased B.B. King concert film, The Road Home: B.B. King in Indianola available for streaming on Vimeo through the weekend. It's a pretty straightforward performance film of King's May 2003 late-night show at Indianola, MS's legendary Club Ebony. Mugge's films are made for folks that love music as much as he does. https://vimeo.com/126855995
  7. Happy 63rd birthday to Arbutus's own, David Byrne.
  8. Peluso Labs in Willis, VA makes some interesting mics. I haven't heard the CEMC6 but have heard some of their other mics. Less than $400 with a cardio capsule and omni, wide cardio and hypercariod capsules are available for <$100. http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com/microphones/CEMC6.html The P-84 is less than $1,200 with an omni and a cardiod capsule, shock mount and hard stand mount. http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com/microphones/P-84.html Best regards, Jim
  9. Happy birthday, Stevie Wonder.
  10. On my radio, Ian McLagan, born on this day in 1945. He was a member of the iconic bands Small Faces and Faces. McLagan also played as a sideman for the Rolling Stones for many years and as a session player for Chuck Berry, Jackson Browne, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt, Bruce Springsteen and Mick Taylor among others. McLagan died after suffering a stroke December 3, 2014 in his adopted home town Austin, TX on the literal eve of a tour with Nick Lowe.
  11. Steve suffered from Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a chronic and progressive disease with no known cause. It eventually leads to liver failure. Steve had been hospitalized for a little over 2 months at the time of his passing. A liver transplant would have prolonged his life or maybe even eliminated the disorder but no suitable donor was available. If you're not already an organ donor, sign up now. It's simple, costs nothing and saves lives. http://www.organdonor.gov/becomingdonor/ http://www.dmv.org/organ-donor.php Best regards, Jim
  12. Often the cross-talk in tape recorders is in the only place you can't shield, the record head. This was a common problem doing cassette transcription tapes even when the proper cable hygiene was observed and the timecode was properly padded down before it hit the recorder and recorded at an appropriate level. Once you beat the level down hard enough, print-through wasn't really a huge problem. I still have a mess of cassette decks somewhere out in the shop and a bunch of now useless purpose-built cables, a couple of modded direct boxes and bad memories of hundreds thousands of hours of interviews making transcription recordings with an audio timecode track. The Jukebox MP3 recorder fixed the problem audio-wise but the horrible user interface made up for the lack of timecode bleed. Everything was fine until you fat-fingered the pause button and stopped the recording rather than pause it. Since there was no auto file number incrementing, you had to take the time to rename the file or erase what you'd just recorded. Progress of sorts, I suppose. Best regards, Jim
  13. Listening to the Flatlanders today, in honor of Jimmy Dale Gilmore's 70th birthday.
  14. Bessie Smith is on my radio in honor of her birth 121 years ago today, 15 April 1894. This is a part of her only appearance on film, in a Paramount 2-reeler released in 1929. It was one of the first talkies.
  15. Percy Sledge, introduced by Otis Redding. Sledge died today, 14 April 2015, at age 74.
  16. Today would have been Lowell George's 70th birthday.
  17. All y'all have a great time. I'll be back when civility returns. Best regards, Jim
  18. Harmonica legend Big Walter Horton was born on April 6, 1918. [edited because I'm a horrible typist]
  19. Merle Haggard is on my radio today, in honor of his 78th birthday.
  20. Muddy Waters is on my radio today, in honor of what would have been his 102nd birthday.
  21. Happy 70th birthday to Eric Clapton.
  22. The shock mount above should fit inside the old school Rycote windshield for a Schoeps MS pair. You'll have to pay for custom fabrication to get that shock mount adapted to the available Rycote hardware. Unless you have a machinist friend, be sitting down when you get the bill. The capsule alignment in the mount shown in the first image Mr. Panfeld posted is far from the ideal of coincident placement. Best regards, Jim
  23. Malcoim, Many cards come factory fresh with either installed (and sometimes write-protected) partitions or applications installed or may not be properly formatted. I've had trouble with new media as a result and so has my wife with her DSLRs. Reformatting on a computer solved the problem in all instances, Best regards, Jim
  24. It's called thin felt or flannel. Widely available, even here on the East Coast. Best regards, Jim
