  1. Interesting - yes I’ve heard people talk about the range and not needing to set gain being the pros… but I think the tx sizes and battery types would be a dealbreaker for me. Thanks for the info :)

Got my new rig built out for the next decade (hopefully) of sound work.  AES out of each receiver for minimal cables.

How do you like the shure wireless? I’ve heard good things. Though the transmitter selection doesn’t look super appealing.

  3. Nice to hear your perspectives. I’ve been combing through my set up, thinking of what I could improve, and that was one area I was thinking about. Was curious if using 2 passive fins would buy me any gains, but it seems like that would be negligible or minimal at best.

I love the simplicity of the d-fin, though I have been thinking it could be nice to have 1 active antenna in case I need to go longer than my maximum 50ft run.

One other thing I have been thinking of is filters - I have read a few diversity fin users say they’ve benefited greatly from adding passive filters to their set up (RF Venue, or PWS). The mixers I’ve talked to have added 470-608 filters and said it has improved their range noticeably. Would this potentially be because the filters have a steeper cut off on both ends of the spectrum than the antenna? I’m always a bit surprised to hear of these gains when the filters people are implementing are quite wideband already (470-608).

Anybody got any extra news about the Audio Wireless DT-BOOST 2 yet? Guessing it will be basically the same as their other products with a tunable filter, limited to 24MHz?

Ya no news but I’m definitely looking forward to its release…

  5. So after a bit more troubleshooting, I tried a 3rd RG8X cable I have, and it’s bnc connector had a tighter fit on the BST connection than the previous 2 cables I had, and it gave me a solid antenna load signal.

When I have my other 2 cables on there (they’re just 2ft jumpers), and with my fingers I put a small amount of pressure on the connection I can get a solid antenna load signal aswell. So perhaps it has to do with the fit of the connectors?

Id really doubt there are anything wrong with my cables as my two 2ft RG8X jumpers have had extremely light use in the field. I use a small extension to a short whip on a little comms box I made when I need to remote my base station on commercials for more range. I haven’t noticed any issues with the flashing antenna signal in practice, but perhaps my next test can be a range test with the antenna load signal solid vs flashing. I have a feeling the difference will be negligible.

  6. Had a question about the antenna load indicator on the comtek BST 75 - when I connect my RG8X cable to an external antenna (whip or sna) I have the indicator flashing, and in the manual it states the following:

ANTENNA INDICATOR: Flashes when transmitter detects coaxial cable shorts and open conditions, bad antenna load.

When I plug the bnc whip directly into the unit it’s solid and doesn’t indicate a bad antenna load. I will say even though the indicator is flashing with an external antenna performance seems to be normal, but I’m curious if anyone has more info about what it means by open conditions / bad antenna load, and if there’s anything I can be doing to maximize the performance.

I am dropping the mini cmit as well and getting a 4017.  I love the sound but my schoeps have been very unreliable.

I love my 4017b - I’m up in Vancouver so we’ve got Pacific Northwest weather of rain, cold temps, snow etc and it has never failed me.

  8. Thanks for the post - I am definitely into the ethos of keeping things simple with passive components.

When you mentioned remoting your antennae 75ft, are you referring to passive antennae? I thought I have read anything past 50ft would require compensation for signal loss. I use RG8X also for my cables.

Also, are you using 2 passive LPDAs? Or are you also using the diversity fin?

My wireless can be within 2 TV channels so I don’t really need a moveable filter either, but it is a form of future proofing. I guess the potential weak points in my system are the SRC receivers (not diversity reception unless operating in ratio mode as 1ch rx), and potentially the diversity fin which might not be as solid as 2 LPDAs.

My cart is pretty small and mobile, so I do have the ability to easily park closer to set and do longer cable runs back to VTR or anyone that needs comms feeds. In a world where it’s helpful for us to have quick solutions to a problem immediately, being able to pop out a 100ft cable run seemed like a decent option to have in the bag also.

How about the simplest 300 ohm dipole antenna that folks have been using on their FM tuners for years?  I had one in the 70s, I have one now.

Update - I found one of these kicking around in my house in a bag filled with rca cables etc, hooked it up and things are sounding crystal clear!

it must have been my dads antenna he originally used with the receiver. good stuff

though I don’t have the “T” fully extended. I’ve kind of snaked it around the sides of my turntable and tascam 4 track that I use to play tapes on. Not perfect antenna orientation but I figure still an improvement from no antenna at all.

  10. Hi all. I’ve been wanting to add filtering to my set up for a while and am considering a few options. Currently running a PSC RF multi with SRCs and a RF Venue diversity fin. 12ft, and 50ft cable runs for cart use only.

Performance has been adequate, but I’ve seen a lot of ppl post they haven’t been super happy with this combo, and I think I could be getting more out of it if I was blocking out unwanted rf noise.

I’ve been thinking of either upgrading my distro to the audio wireless DADM (built in filtering + ability to have an active antenna on a single channel, or both - unlike the rf multi)

Or adding the new audio wireless rf filter/booster to my current set up ( https://www.audiowireless.co.uk/online-store/DIGITALLY-TUNED-DUAL-ANTENNA-FILTER-DT-BOOST-2-p481882216 )

Or adding an antenna with filters like the Wisycom LFA to my current system.

Would be curious to hear people’s thoughts on the differences between upgrading the rf distro vs. antenna vs. simply adding a filter to the current set up…

This looks great! I’m curious, do you fully extend the antenna? It looks pretty big! Around 4.9ft when extended..

  12. Thanks for the links everyone, appreciate it. The receiver is a SR4000, and it very well might have an internal antenna. I’ve got decent reception for some of our city’s main stations, but there are others that are too fuzzy for my liking.

Which got me thinking, do certain radio stations pay more for higher transmitting power? I’d assume so based on my home/driving listening experiences…

I’m also curious, why is it that a 75ohm antenna would do better close to the receiver, but the 300ohm would more than likely require being remoted to a window?

For posterity, here's Cinela's response when I asked about the firmness of the fit:

"The 4017B can formally "slide" along the cradle, with a certain friction. No risk at all regarding "plays" and noises, but in case you have a shock, some pressure, or pullings of the cable, that may lead to a little displacement. Very easy to recover if you make a little mark somewhere on the Mic body. In fact you can also adjust the force and friction applied to the Mic body during the holder insertion. When you make the quater turn to lock it, you feel the increase of the tension on the mic body. Feel free to put some thin tape around the mic body (at the right place), in order to "lock" the microphone mode hardly. I'm sure you'll appreciate this in front of the unit. You will figure out easily. I'm sure that if you use a tape with "rough finish" (I mean not a slippy one), you'll easily increase the friction !"

I've got one on order and will report back with pics.

Nice! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts

Only negative I can think of is it’s not as easy for storage with the protruding XLR end, when it’s fully in there you can pack it into bags way easier.

Reviving an old thread to keep the topic together.

Cinela has updated the COSI-L-19 to show that it can fit both the 4017C and the B amp. The B amp, though has to be unmounted and slid back (see pics on their site).

Is there anyone using a B in this COSI and how secure is that friction fit?

Very interesting! I’m a 4017b user and had no idea this existed. I feel like not a lot of other people know about this cosi for the B preamp, so I kind of doubt we’ll get much feedback from the field… curious to hear from people’s experience as well.

  15. I have not heard the best reviews for the nanoshield with handling noise. I agree I like the design though.

Cinela is obviously better in that regard, but I find myself sticking in the rycote camp just because the form factor is easier and smaller to pack in bags, which is helpful for how I organize my kit.

  16. Yea, I don’t think the middle section can be removed for a boom pole. But to be honest just adding a quick release to the tripod makes mic swaps between boom and tripod super fast, and given how small the stand folds up to fitting it in your backpack is no problem.

i also found when you had the legs extended on the tripod, and compressed them to more or a pole shape, you actually could swing a mic on the end of it for some simple fx gathering i would say.

  17. Thought I’d share a new favorite piece of kit I picked up last year for the purpose of ambient recordings on documentary projects.

The siriu 5c traveller folds up super small, and making recordings while not freezing up my body trying to be perfectly still has been a welcome change haha.

  18. I actually ran into this same issue today, trying to feed a Amira aes audio from my 633. I didn’t have time to troubleshoot it before we rolled, so I’m just sending my mono mix to the camera instead of a boom and lav split like I originally intended.

I played with different routing options in my output menu and it didn’t change it on the Amira. Bit of a head scratcher.
