  1. Hi DC106. I'm curious why you would choose the MKH50. Have you considered the MKH40?
  2. I read an interview where an actual soldier from Dunkirk sad the movie was louder than the war zone he remembers.
  3. Rado and I are together on this. The 4098 was not billed as a film production mic until people in the field saw it's usefulness for plant mics, particularly in cars. It was originally billed as a lectern microphone that would also be feeding loudspeakers. They are certainly a useful tool to have on the set, and I have used them successfully as car plants, but I much prefer the sound quality characteristics of the shorter, more open, 4080 for this use.
  4. This spec is the capacity of the power supply, not the current draw of the mixer/recorder, so the draw of the mixer/recorder would have to be somewhat less. However, with all of the mic inputs and AD/DA converters in this device, even 2A @12V would be impressively low. The good news for production sound (as maybe you were alluding) is that it can be powered with an external 12VDC on a commonly used connector, which seems to have (hopefully) a 2.1mm inside diameter (same as Lectro uses). Trew Audio has them on order, and Zoom tells use that production deliveries may be a month away.
  5. i'm looking forward to checking one out. Regarding the 60dB gain, while that's low compared to the preamps on some other, more expensive mixers, It's unusual to need more that 60dB gain with the high-output condenser microphones we normally use. Plus, the fact is that most of the preamps we use these days are are built into the wireless transmitter. At first glance, though, it's hard to seriously imagine this mixer for dialog on a video drama production, if for no other reason than the very short throw faders. But I'm keeping an open mind until I get my hands and ears on one.
  6. Thanks, Jim, for pointing out so many of Don's achievements.
  7. On my recent show I used Movie Slate exclusively, and didn't use the recorder-generated report on the Deva 5.8. Before the show started I set up a nice rig to hold my iPad, which looked very impressive and high-tech on my cart. Then one day I left my iPad at home. After freaking out, I remembered that I had Movie Slate installed on my phone, and felt I had no choice but to learn how to get by with Movie Slate and just my phone. At the end of the day I decided that the phone was all I needed, and the only advantage to using the iPad was for the cool appearance. So, for the next 8 months of the production, I used only my iPhone with Movie Slate for sound reports. The reports looked the same to those who received them, and the smaller size actually let me enter the data more quickly. I eventually got to the point that I wouldn't bother to try to advance each take every time I rolled. Even if I didn't enter any data into movie slate from the beginning of the day to the lunch time break, I could easily catch up the days work in just a few minutes before emailing the reports. Movie Slate... iPhone. All you need.
  8. One frame out of sync is noticeable. Two or more frames out is distracting and unacceptable. It is a said state that we have become so accustomed to seeing sound and picture several frames or more out of sync, we have become numb to seeing lips out of sync with words, just like so many have become numb to out-of-perspective sound of body mics. While there might be reasons to have to deal with out-of-perspective sound, there is no excuse for living with out of sync sound.
  9. If preamps are your priority, the Nagra 7 would probably win. But with size being your priority, there are other choices. Keep in mind that the Nagra 7 has a host of other attributes and features that are unique to Nagra, and it is also quite small.
  10. Hi Ryan. Those items are fairly easy to replace on that board. If you are in LA I'd take it to our Burbank store. Both Forrest and Jaime have a lot of experience inside those boards. If you are in Atlanta, bring it to our store there for Gary Rogers to fix. Otherwise, call Steve George at Remote Audio in Nashville.
  11. Hi Ryan. What mixer model do you have that needs repair and what repair does it need? Because they are so compact, repairing the current model Sonosax mixers is often not a very intuitive endeavor, and require a very specific disassembly and reassembly order. For this reason, I advise against having even a very good but unfamiliar technician attempt servicing them. Forrest Forbes (Trew Audio Los Angeles in Burbank) has extensive experience and factory rep training with the SXST and SXAD, and others. Steve George (Remote Audio service manager in Nashville) has factory training at the Swiss factory, and extensive experience with the SXST. I also have Sonosax factory training with their mixers, so while I do not have time to turn the screws myself, feel free to contact me for help and advice. The best way to contact me quickly is to call a Trew Audio location, and they will get a message to me. Best, Glen
  12. I don't know of a right angle equivalent to the 761K that is not molded to a cable. Molded right angle connector/cable assemblies are readily available.
  13. I'm using the IFB200 to control the gain and recorders of my two plugin transmitters, using two knobs of the Deva recorder, and all is good.
  14. With Denecke it's 23. All the same, standing for 23.976. Anything with a 23.
  15. This from the Commission on Presidential Debates: "Sep 30, 2016: Regarding the first debate, there were issues regarding Donald Trump's audio that affected the sound level in the debate hall". Of course, all of us know that it wasn't the microphone, and it probably had something to do with the house sound reinforcement system. But it's a given that when metropolitan property developers explain audio, they sound to us like we sound to them when we explain metropolitan property development.
  16. If I still have the MP-1 that I reviewed for Audio Media 15 years ago, I might win. I'll check.

  18. He was saying that it seemed to go in and out through the speakers in the auditorium.
  19. Here's an article worth reading about the collaboration between the Camera and Sound departments on "Suicide Squad". http://soundandpicture.com/2016/09/sound-mixer-lisa-pinero-camera-operator-peter-rosenfeld-discuss-suicide-squad-collaboration/
  20. The 4073 is a very good short shotgun mic. It doesn't get the attention it deserves, which is why you were able to get it at such a low price. You did very well.
  21. Single Cicada clicking sounds are very different from the pulsating drone of millions of synchronized cicadas in group-thinkj mode. My guess is that one is easier than the other to reduce with a digital algorithm device. The DNS-2 is a relevant comparison to the Super CMIT, in that the Super CMIT is basically a less sophisticated DNS-2 that is in constant learn mode, and with just two intensity options.
  22. Sorry for double posting this link, but, relevant to this thread, and for those who might not have seen it, here is an article about the Dugan auto mixer now installed in the Sound Devices 688. Dan Dugan explains his auto mixer, and Jon Tatooles explains the difference between the Dugan auto mixer and the Sound Devices "Mix Assist", which is also installed in the 688. http://soundandpicture.com/2016/09/a-perfect-mix-sound-devices-and-dan-dugan/.
  23. The Sound and Picture website has posted an article about the Dugan auto mixer being implemented in the Sound Devices 688 mixer/recorder. Dan Dugan and Jon Tatooles were interviewed, and shed a lot of light on using the technology. http://bit.ly/2cdkH6W
  24. Jeff, we need a like button. 62, and glad I have so many elders to look up to.
