Amazing response, which mostly reminds me how ignorant I am about this whole process [emoji38] I own a recording studio, and have a friend that's making micro budget films. Mixed one for him. Sound was terrible, so we agreed that if I bought a small kit (416, sd mixpre, tascam dr-70) he'd pay me to record (and mix) the next one. So I'm wildly ignorant, and playing catchup. Hi again! So, noob question... are scripted things usually shot with multiple cameras? Or just one? How, if it is shot with multiple cameras are you gathering audio? Multi boom? My point is that his advice, which amounts to "go be exposed to professionals and watch them and work under them and don't put the cart before the horse" Is very good advice, but often doesn't apply to people. Some people are going to learn by going out and doing it, many many people in fact. For those people, that advice makes no sense. Well, I played around recording my fiancée and mom a little today, and I can't remember who said it but they were right, I hear the room more then I expected. (That same person also said a number of other things I found to be correct in my short test, but that's for another time) So what's sop for prepping a room? I edited my post above just before I saw this one re:the line level input.Don't actually know if the input is really truly line level though. I kind of suspect not. And the test was strictly Dr70 vs sound devises mp1 going into the dr70. So not perfect for evaluation, but "real world" for me. I'm not saying "no difference" but if the r-44's pre's had sounded like this, I almost certainly never would have bought the mp1 in the first place. I very much only expected "good enough" in my price range really. But the r-44 was hot garbage. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Got the tascam dr70 today. The preamps are noticeably better then the Rolland r-44, so that's a win. Headphone amp is noticeably quieter though, so that's a bit of a bummer. I'm using sennheiser hd280's which are pretty loud headphones, and the isolate some so they're pretty good. I'll play with it for a while and see if the headphone amp is "good enough" or what. The sound devices mp is just a small step over the tascam pre's frankly, but the limiting is much better. Gonna keep it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk The difference between the pre's in the r-44 and the dr70 is pretty huge though, strictly from a noise floor standpoint. And the dr70 has a (select line level) in the menu as opposed to just turning the gain knob down to +4, which makes me feel better about life, even if it doesn't actually change the result.

Not to be confused with the other thread below, asked by someone who knows entirely more then I do. How much "mixing" is actually going on? I assume that everything that can reasonably be, is being multitracked at that point, to be mixed later. Or is it more just babysitting wireless and keeping an eye on things, and maybe riding the levels? I know this question is *completely ridiculous* to all of you, but I really just don't know. Thank every one, this is all excellent stuff! I'll talk to the director about getting multiple coverage (near /mid / far where needed) Is a long shotgun something I should consider in the future? I see online where people say that they barely use them anymore. Also, since I sold the r-44 in favor of the dr-70 (which ostensibly has much less noisy preamps) Maybe I can sell my sound devices mp-1 mic pre? I kind of want to keep it, *because it's neat an I like owning good gear* But that's not a very good reason to keep it.
