Any remotely legit production should definitely have production insurance that covers both people and equipment. If they don’t, that would be a major red flag. Ask them for a COI that lists you as a loss payee. Should be a matter of getting it emailed within the same day.

    - Anyone renting anything from a rental house needs to have insurance coverage from production.

As for S Corp, I was told it only makes sense if you’re making over $150K per year. Went to a “class” specifically focused on what we do, but I haven’t really looked into it too closely after that.
One thing that made me appreciate payroll jobs was when the pandemic lockdowns happened - having done enough of them to be able to get unemployment was a life saver …

The biggest Reality production company in the world just asked my buddy who was renting a grip truck “just the truck” to carry insurance on set of somebody gets hurt by his grip gear that he does not operate.  He said no.

Nice build as always.  Must be the shows kit? I always thought you were a Zax man.  But I also hear Wisycom is the king of range so maybe that's a factor?

maybe their new stuff is good but those old receivers are very finicky. Get interference from … me breathing to close to them. 🙂 But seriously they have good range but get interference from walkie talkies. And the wide band is not ideal for transmitters in the bag.

Wideband imho is a bad idea.

  3. Trying to have it small but it is impossible.

COuld have made it smaller but the 633 sprays so much RF garbage in the wisy receivers.

Physical separation works but separate power source is the best.

But I am not willing to carry the weight of an another battery for it.

Been lurking this forum for 6 years now, finally happy to share my bag. My approach with this bag is to build a system that is powerful enough for 99% of my jobs working on commercials/doc/corporate. Sometimes it lives on a minicart, sometimes I'm run and gun. I have an additional Protogear module that expands the bag to fit 3 more receivers and an RF distro when needed.

Looks small and compact. Do you need the giant distro?

I have lost jobs due to not being willing to provide insurance for the production company.  All of these companies were very big on telling me that "this is just how the industry works".  I replied that in nearly 50 years in production I had never provided insurance for a client and would not be starting now.   And yes, feel free to download any contract and cross out anything you don't like and add anything you want.  That's the way lawyers do it.  If they don't like your changes then can push back.  Mostly they hope that you either won't notice what a fuck their contract is or will be too intimidated or desperate to push back on it.

Every time I did not loose the job. Just became an employe. Gear on an invoice

I'd tell them to pound sand then.  What's next, you need to pay them for the catering too?  If production doesn't want liability, then they shouldn't be creating a production.

What I said. I have been asked to carry my own insurance if loan out “and I become employee”  but asking for me not even being there is hilarious..

Interesting. What bag are you using currently Rado? Last I heard you had some custom version.

I use a $25 bag from amazon called condor. There is tread somewhere here.

I designed a bag for Nova OneUnit but have not had time to make it.

  8. Yea yea I know they stole. But everybody else in business steals including the usual bag manufacturers so …

I know I am going to get a lot of hate but as you all might have found out already I don’t give a F@ck.

    This is just information.

Proaim made a bag. Still old school heavy design and made of polyester but  a cheaper version.

    Price is $167

I wonder how much weight you can save with a lighter bag…

Speaking into the side of a capsule will never sound good. At least not good as when speaking into the large side of it

As I said if switched as omni the pickup pattern will get good voice with less detail in  sibilance.  I have dropped an Omni LC between few singers and even the once off axis sounded fine. Not to mention omni helps with comb filtering.

Here is a 3d picture of how different  polarizations pick up.

Airheads! The audiocentric movie that overlooked so much! The entire duration of this movie based in a radio station, the presenter uses an AKG C-414 (with wind support) as a front address mic as opposed to a side address mic.

Maybe it’s set as omni. I have used it like that back at my music recording days when I did not have a pop screen

OK but here's a weird one. This is actually a TV show that use LDCs for its primary sound, so it's basically a good looking video podcast, with actual camera operators and such, not like a Joe Rogan type deal. It's a Swedish show. I just think it's weird that they choose to have the mics like that. It's almost uncanny valley. I mean I like the sound of it, it sounds great, but there's a big disconnect with what I'm used to seeing as a TV viewer.

    Utrikesbyrån.jpg

Nothing wrong with this setup. Golden Ratio seams to be in tact.  The pop screen might be a overkill but an overkill that does not hurt is ok in my book.

But what about EVERY SINGLE LATE NIGHT SHOW (excuse me, not every single one obviously, but very many) with an LDC mic just sitting on a desk like it's doing something!? Maybe I'm just ignorant, maybe they're there for some reason, but I can't see what that would be other than aesthetics.

Harrow S2E7 looks like a Neumann u87 but is being used as a front address mic instead of a side address mic. Pretty sloppy to have such an expensive mic as a prop!

Again maybe it is omni and it sounds good.

I can’t even count anymore the number of times I‘ve corrected this on sets I worked on. But a second before we start rolling some prop person walks by and „oh this is wrong“ changes it back and we roll.

Might sound good. Less pop from air.

Music video. I would have switched it as well. Looks cooler from that angle.

A bit of a departure from the usual shenanigans. I’m watching this Netflix true crime show, and all the interview segments are framing so wide that they literally have lights visible for most of the time, but still see fit to have the boom so high above the subject that it would basically be useless. I’m sure that the sound mixer objected at this clearly aesthetic choice on the part of production, but seriously, the fact that these interviews only use seconds at a time of the video portions, they really should prioritize the boom. It just makes my mind explode that someone would hinge the quality of their production on such a trivial aesthetic. 🤯

It is sad but I have done it as well. B cam on a 24 pulled back. Pretty much Lav as final sound. Or even boom if it is quiet and good acoustical . Looks like mk41
