  1. Well, it's good for the Vancouver guys I guess. So they never actually shot anything in NY? Philip Perkins
  2. what (whose) bag is that. looks good Philip Perkins
  3. As I said in my initial post in this thread, I have a 12" Hoodman for the now-departed Powerbook I used to use on location, but Hoodman doesn't have any of the hoods for larger laptops, and has never made a line of hoods for MacIntel laptops (MacBook, MacBook Pro) at all. I called and the person on the phone knew of no plans to update their product line in this regard. I ended up with a "Compu-Shade" (as in the photo above)--cheaper than the Hoodman was but not as effective and much clunkier. I did find other hoods that would work but they were not any better designed and were more expensive than the CompuShade. For the moment it will have to do. Philip Perkins
  4. It looks like most of them are splitters for balanced signals, the ones with belt clips are simple boom op boxes, and the others are the kind of quick problem-solver box one might make for a specific job, throw on a shelf and then never use again ( I have a shelf full of very similar looking boxes from over the years.) 5. ok, now we're talking. Philip Perkins
  6. The way you are talking about working is not unlike how the film "Milk" was recorded--not crazy at all--very "modern" in fact. If you want to "walk" the RX I would go for the smaller battery operated units all around though. Philip Perkins
  7. The main reason to have the smaller RX is if you think you'd want to work out of a "bag" or doco kind of setup. The little Senn RX don't work all that well as rack mount gear, due to where the display, connectors and antenna are placed, so if you think you will always be able to use your rack then I'd go for the rack units. However, if you have to do some "run-and-gun" or even insert car shots, you are probably going to have trouble w/ the rack mounts. How about 4 or so of the rack mounts and 2 smaller ones to cover yourself? Are you intending to use separate antennas per RX or make an antenna distro system so you can use just one for all? Philip Perkins
  8. This is all way too practical. I want to see some really pimped 7506s. Like, rhinestones, etc.. Philip Perkins
  9. You know Jeff for me it's down to what you want to do, which one you want to work on. I could see that keeping up with the two forums might be a lot of work, and since it is a public service (that I value highly) I'll follow wherever this thing leads. For now I'm more used to this forum, but if you decided to make it part of the Cinemasound thing I'll deal. Philip Perkins
  10. I did do jobs with sync cables--although by that time the technology existed for Xtal everything, but some producers didn't want to pay for it. We also used cables even with Nagra 4.2s to do "pilot-supression" slates for long interviews. We were so happy to be done with sync cables.....and then video happened..... Philip Perkins
  11. You don't really need the video deck's WC--and is it really 48k WC or TriLevel Sync? In any case the 744 will clock itself to the incoming TC just fine (one connection instead of 2). You can clock the Traveler to the incoming TC from the 744 (or the video deck) since you need to input it anyway to get it to BR, or save the input and use AES or SPDIF or WC from the 744 to clock the Traveler (TC or no) and send the TC from either the 744 or the video deck to the audio input of the computer and tell BR to look for it there. Philip Perkins
  12. I got a call from someone today who needs a quick recording done of a corporate employee in Coral Gables. Sounds like easy money if you are avail (they didn't say a date, and I think that's flexible). Any JWSounders in that area? Philip Perkins
  13. It might work re: some kinds of hearing loss. It has been discovered that some hearing problems, including many forms of tinnitus, are actually neurological in nature, not a problem with the physical aspects of the ear. Philip Perkins
  14. It seems like you might be over-thinking this, unless I'm missing something here. The Mackie mixers have a Tape-Return input to do exactly what you are talking about--and it's there in the Control Room monitor section. This will give you a 2 channel return. For MORE than two channels you might resort to what you mentioned, but I found doing things that way on a Mackie very confusing under fire so I went with using an outboard line-mixer for all the returns (as from several cameras or a multitrack) and bringing the stereo output of that mixer back to the Mackie's Tape Return. Philip Perkins
  15. "Booper" is my term, mea culpa, sorry for confusion. I didn't like "bloop" because in radio audio the term means an embarrassing mistake. I also think the SOUND it makes sounds is more like "BOOOOOP" than "BLOOOP". A stupid consideration, but my own. Philip Perkins
  16. The Nagra oscillator trigger was just a switch closure--many of the boopers I made were just simple switches with a battery connected to a flashlight bulb. Maybe Ron made a version with a signal generator in it too in the same box--lots of pins on that Tuchel--and I bet that would have had a slate mic. I remember being jealous of how much brighter the numbers were in the model you have--editors liked them better. There was another popular model made by someone in the East that only had a 2-number display but the numbers were MUCH bigger (and red). I went looking for (and couldn't find) a truly goofy booper I bought used in the late '70s--it was made by Frezzolini and had two STROBE bulbs mounted on it. It was VERY bright--distracting almost inside but way visible even in strong sunlight. The problem was that the big caps it had to charge up the strobes took several seconds to recharge, so if the shooter missed your first bloop, you were dead--they had to wait 5-6 seconds for another flash. This booper did not end up seeing much use..... Philip Perkins
  17. Apple comes right out and tells you it won't work. Philip Perkins
  18. I think that's the PSC model. Does this unit have a signal generator in it? Philip Perkins
  19. I too use a white MB w/ PT and Metacorder etc etc. It's fine but lacks a couple of things that would be helpful for location sound work. First is screen brightness. The MBPs (like the Powerbooks before them) have way brighter screens. The MB is fine inside, but outside I need a hood all the time. This wasn't true of the higher end models. 2nd is a slot for accessory cards, which can give you another FW (or etc) bus or other i/o. Another is general construction--the plastic computers are cheesier. I also found that even though I had used my PB in the misty rain and etc for years w/o trouble, the first time my MB got a little wet around the screen the seal leaked, so now I have a cloud floating around the edges. I feel like the MBP sounds better out of its speakers. Finally, I'd like to be able to run Final Cut since that is what nearly all my post work is picture-edited on--and FCP will not load on a MacBook. So when I am able to amp-up to buying another laptop, I'd really like to get the top of the line again. Philip Perkins
  20. The Neutrik chassis connectors I've had used a hole that was made by the male-Switchcraft Greenlee. (A big advantage for Neutrik.) Phil p
  21. I remember the PSC blooper, that's not what this one is (Ron would never have sold anything this funky). I bet it's an "OJC Enterprises" unit. Love to see the schematic if you can upload. Philip Perkins
  22. I found that the Greenlee punch that works for Switchcraft male chassis-XLRs works for both sexes of Neutrik chassis XLRs. Philip Perkins
  23. Way cool--definitely brought a smile to my face. My Nagra III is one of the pieces of sound gear I regret selling these days, not because I'd still use it but because it looked so cool. I had the Kudelski resolver for mine--looked like something out of a steam locomotive! Philip Perkins
