  1. Are there any similar modifications for the CS-1 I wonder? mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  2. As Jeff would have recounted, many of us older guys worked with a mono Nagra 4.2 and mixed to one track, a boom and 4 radio mikes. It relies on rehearsals and actors who stick to a script. That's when I became a sound mixer and not a track layer!!!! Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  3. If anyone is a starter they are going to be wired to a video camera. Buy an old HI-MD minidisc recorder as backup recorder and save dollars! IMHO Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  4. No!!!!!!! It's a very wide cardioid, prone to handling noise. Useless as a normal boom mike under normal conditions Otherwise I love it! Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  5. Was going to suggest this. A thermal fuse and and also a diode for reverse polarity is a good low cost move. I suggested this for the Remote Audio speakers and they went that way Cheers Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  6. Sanken CS-1 Cheap but remarkable - I have 2 Needs a good mount Rycote Lyre mounts work well not the older round ones Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  7. I've recently done double XY recordings plus radios on additional tracks Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  8. Done it many times!! But I will top this experience!!!!! Half a day in the trunk of a Ford limo! On the top deck of a car transporter! Travelling on a freeway. 3 actors and a least no carbon monoxide Cheers Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  9. Well said Rob. I think the original poster was using Sony mikes and that may not be helpfull. My love is Trams, Sonotrims and B6's. I do have COS 11's but rarely use them. Totally agree with headphone listening versus the result on speakers, strange but true. Cheers Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  10. It's a tough subject!! Yes clean hands, clean nails, fresh chewing gum and discreet cologne is a good start. Women with large breasts can be a problem as they sit lower. I like to use a Tram personally. Women with small breasts a perhaps no bra - I use hypo-allergenic tape placed in between. I recorded a show with Cybill Shepherd who had her own belts and her assistant did the rigging. She was great to work with and eventually allowed me to have a peep to check the rig! What a strange job it is! Well done all the posters on this critical subject Cheers Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  11. Just about to ask about a fuse I commonly use vehicle flat blade fuses as they are cheap and easily changed For a box like this a 20mm bayonet type fuse-holder on one is the way to go for quick replacement if needed I would put the fuse in series with the +ve supply input say 3 to 5 amps Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  12. I've used my Sanken CSS-5 for 10 years on features MOW's and documentaries. Sure mono booms and radio mikes are the essential tools for dialogue but to support post production with additional sound effects an atmospheres is a valuable contribution. Ethnic music is also brought alive by stereo and CSS- 5 is a convenient way to do it. Cheers Mike
  13. Jokingly I always say "Trust me I'm a doctor" !! Mike
  14. Hi Damien, Have worked in many extreme climates including India, Africa, New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. Dust, rain and direct sun are the enemies. Keep equipment shaded whenever possible and have rain protection maybe a space blanket handy. Personal mikes can suffer from human sweat and become noisy so carry spares. Look after yourself too as you are the most important part of your kit Good luck Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  15. That's the one Andre - well spotted Cheers Mike
  16. As most productions are picture led, sometimes the sound mixer is expected to cope with situations that are very difficult and without any understanding. I have serviced many productions but a couple of years ago I worked on a strange shoot in Fiji that has even yet to be released next year maybe or straight to DVD. I had to record/manage total free-form actor and camera action. Seven minute takes, no coverage, add libbs, off camera dialogue you name it. I "captured" it on 6 tracks an was later accused of not handing in a tidy result!!!!!! The rest was up to post production who had great ideas on how I should have done it! Very easy in the calm of a mixing suite whilst I had been recording on beaches and in tropical jungles with half clothed actors. Hey that's show biz Mike
  17. Recorded a live concert full orchestra plus featured piano for CD released. I used a Soundfield mike and a Genex recorder. I guess delivery into a ProTools sytem is viable but monitoring is the catch. Centre placement yes but i guess you can still place/steer the mike in post. Would love to chat more Regards Mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz
  18. Worked in many audience shows in the UK years ago The sound mixer had control of the PA level and we were generally using studio booms. From memory the feed to the PA was through a compressor to take the edge off. You justn need to make sure level on then PA is ok and that if any ringing happens pull the level back. Lavs will give you a big advantage so tight rig them high to the mouths not low down. Mike
  19. Gee - do you have a good chiropracter to keep your back in one piece?? Cheers Mike
  20. 1 Ask the post house what they want 2 Put an audio guide track on the camera 3 Use a time-code slate 4 Record a backup Simple Mike
  21. Feed 1 camera from your mixer The other two feed by Comtec or let them put a camera mike on as a guide Get each take slated with a clap - simple hand clap is good Record a backup if you can Simple Mike
  22. From my experience boom ops like a feed of dialogue particularly in noisy locations plus they appreciate comments and jokes from the mixer! They also need to use their ear on set so small headphones and maybe they just use the on one ear! Mike
  23. I've done a lot off this stuff. Earlier days I was in the boot of the car. Nowdays I put the recorder and the slate in the car and press the button! I've done this with 4 radio mikes into my HHB Portadrive and also with 2 Sanken CUB-01 plant mikes - an amazing result for 4 people ad-libbing Do not rely on RF range coz it will let you down in car rig situations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just remove the stress! Mike
  24. Put guide track on the camera by radio and use your timecode slate Use free run on slate and recorder Simple Mike
  25. A`wall of cellphones playing Tchaikovsky 5 days work Yep I was recording cellphones!!!! Mike
