  1. Now now guys! Well so far my attempts at feeding the RED with guide and time-code have left me numb! Camera stops working and stares "audio error" OK remove guide track radio feed Camera will not boot up after battery change OK remove my time-code box So its separate recorder and a time-code slate and no stress just like film eh! mike
  2. I live in in paperless world now! No more trying to write in ball pen on rain sodden log pages! I enter slate/take/notes into my Portadrive I backup on my laptop each day I use BWF Widget Pro to extract all the info. It produces a complete log with t/code in and out for each take plus duration All this complete with my logo and phone number and production data This then ends up as a PDF that I burn with the rushes and or email I then archive the day on a 1.5T ext drive complete with the log mike
  3. Jan dearest, Red nail polish is distinctly a "girls" touch Well done!!!! mike
  4. And the suits got their pay packets, bonuses, expense lunches, and company cars!!!!! Yeah! Why does a producer drive an Audi or a Merc or a Jag??????? Because it costs money on the bus! mike
  5. I've never run a backup recorder on the basis that if the main recorder spits the dummy I would be sufficently aware to switch to another machine on standby. I appreciate using two machines, one for ISO and another for a mix but with an 8 track recorder is that not enough tracks. A question ( having mixed so much to 1 or 2 tracks) - If you do a 1 or 2 track mix is is really polished or just an attempt a a mixa?? Jeff you may have views and experince on this approach as an original sound mixer!!!!! mike
  6. Back to the subject here on NZ a lot of Red HD and a bit of 5D and 7D Also a bit of smal HD camera use Bigger stuff is 35 and some 16 when film is needed and budget low I guess tight budgets and often fast turnarounds dictate video so often But - sound is still sound with separate recorder, t/c slate, radios, Comteks etc mike
  7. Confirmative from this side of the Pacific Thanks Charlie for unending support - Mike would be proud of you!!! mike
  8. My dear Jan, One is never too old to make mistakes and learn lessons! Loved you post about 3rd's - very well defined! Cheers mike
  9. My best mistake!! Series of night shoots finishing 4am A wrap is called - at last! I press the power down button on Portadrive then the appropriate yes button Nothing happens so I fumble again. No power down so I look at the top display "Formatting Drive" !!!!!!!!! Decided not to say anything at 4am and cause chaos Phoned my son in Tokyo, got advice, downloaded software Connect laptop to Portadrive 5 hours later it's all back in one piece!! Wow a mistake to remember mike
  10. Dear Jan - all of the above. Working without a 3rd is a total pain. Should we waste 3 minutes of any shoot for the mixer or boom op to stop rehearsals or takes to go and change a battery in a Comtek or check a time-code slate - NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have walked on glass to get a 3rd with me on some shoots. On a Disney shoot I did with a great boom operator (LOR and KK for Sir Peter) our 3rd saved the day by 2nd booming. Why do PM's not want to understand what is needed?? mike
  11. Coincidentally the NZ Film Commission has just been in the spotlight because of a report headed by Sir Peter Jackson saying it is just not doing anything for the NZ film industry, is seen as virtually an enemy by the industry and should be dramatically overhaulled!!!! How about that! mike
  12. I have two Sensorcoms I use them when needed and really charge for them therefore! Necklace inductors are not the best. I made my own inductors and glued vampire clips to them so they can be placed in the collar and close to the ear of the user. Great to have when they are needed ! mike
  13. My invoice template! mike
  14. Exactly Phil!! I'm a sound mixer and for many jobs a 702T works fine. If on a huge job post wants iso tracks then you need 4 TO 8 track recorder - simple!!! mike
  15. Is it the Sonotrim head or the connector or the socket on the transmitter? I've experienced TRAM problems in real tropical situations with sweat - probably no cure as when the mikes dry out they are OK I also found that dirt and moisture on the male input connector or a Lectro simply needed a good blow out with an air can ti get rid of the dirt and moisture. Yep a B6 should be a solution to fall back to but I love my Trams and Sonotrims mike
  16. OOps Thought they were the NZ films from the 80's that I recorded and BVS mixed that the NZ Film Commision have never bothered to release on DVD because they are so busy going to Cannes and giving funding to teenage directors that have managed to struggle through a short film subsidised by a professional crew!! (the trewth often hurts) mike
  17. Yes I've had Trams get noise in real humid tropical shoots in New Guinea. But I did have that Lectro noise on it's own happen in tropical Fiji If you are talking TA5M connectors on the transmitter, dirt eventually collects around the pins. This was the problem, so a good blast with an air can plus some DeOxit was the fix. Maybe use B3's B6's or DAP's that are waterproof and should not be subject to moisture? mike

    Sanken CS-2

Thanks Glen for the insight. I'm looking forward to a listen when a CS-2 reaches New Zealand. Once again Sanken have introduced a boom mike with no bass roll off switch - strange. Despite other posts I love the CS-1 I tried a CS-3 (not an e) when they first arrived and felt my AKG CK69 sounded better. I real sit down with headphones on in a semi working situation would be great to compare say 6 or 7 boom mikes. Most good mikes sound the same when you talk on them 6 inches away but working conditions sure sort out the wheat from the chaff! Cheers to all - great posts mike
  19. Greg et al, Wonderful information!! Did not intend to slag your video clip as I quite understand student safety issues. I'm having a demo of the 5100 next week and will record material for promotion. I realise the limited appeal of the 0.1 element but hey it's there. Exciting days for all of us Kind regards mike
  20. An interesting clip though not adventurous. A simpler and more exciting application would be to stand in a traffic island in a main street and record the passing vehicles. I recorded a short film using a simple 4.0 approach and the results were surprising. mike

    Sanken CS-2

Perhaps 2 is the new 4 !!! Jeff I hope it has a bass cut switch!! I spent a couple of hours with the two design engineers in Tokyo at Sanken and pointed out that the CS-1 lacked a bass cut whereas the CS-3e had one. Why?? no answer !!!! Still - great products mike
  22. Had this problem when adding a Zax 2 channel camera hop to my bag system. Separate batteries are the way to go, otherwise I found that a filter in the positive line worked OK I used one designed for removing alternator whine in cars. Just a cap and and an inductor in a potted box. Will measure values and re-post mike
  23. Had a hold of the beast today and an insight into it's design. Very clever, compact and well thought out in a practical way. Have not had a listen but hope to evaluate soon. Not a cheap addition at US$3,800 mike
  24. I have given up on interfacing with the RED Guide track receiver or a time-code box have all lead to the camera saying no End of story!! mike
  25. Radio mikes and a boom have a look at RESERVOIR DOGS mike
