  1. I too have been looking into wireless solutions, however, I have been avoiding anything working off of wifi frequencies like the plague for obvious reasons. I did manage to find a cheap Chinese tx/rx setup that works in standard def, and worked pretty well, but I purchased a cheap down converter for it to tap off of video villages HD monitors, and had no luck on that end. So I may have to buckle down and get a decimator or something of similar quality.
  2. I only use SMQVs, and 90% of the time I leave them at 100mW. The other 10% theyre either at 50mW or 250mW. If I could get a wideband SMQV, but was limited to 100mW max output power, I'd take it. Though it'd be great if the wideband meant 470-block 23. I like the form factor of the SMQV, I like the dual battery compartment, which allows me to power them all day off of two lithiums, and I don't care about IR because the tx has to be visible for that to be useful. The dweedle tone is more than fine for me, and the actors get a kick out of it. They're not THAT much bigger than an SMV, so I've never had size be an issue. Though if I could get everything I want listed in my above statement, I may go halfsies on SMQVs and SMVs if/when I get a Venue2, assuming they made wideband SMs.
  3. Very nice. I'd love to own a couple of these!
  4. Like many others, I try to avoid walkies at all costs. If people want me to know stuff they can do their job and come and find me. I'm not hard to spot If I must wear a walkie, I recommend getting your own channel and using the Tony Smyles box.
  5. I run all SMQVs. In the next year or so I will probably add another Venue system to my cart. Having a V2 with wideband SMQVs would be fantastic. Only thing is that, as 600mHz is going away, having a band that covers 470-600mHz (blocks 470, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23) would be truly amazing. I would be inclined to move to SRs if they end up being wide band with tracking front end as well
  6. Do it and charge for it. It is common here is Hollywood on any sort of production, but we don't do it for free.
  7. F stands for Flat Frequency Response. Regular versions of this mic have a slightly altered frequency response to make up for how these mics sound due to how they operate. Some mixers complained about it, so they made the lesser known F version. At least this is the story I was told.
  8. Good to know. I have often wondered about this, and have asked my boom ops if they had experienced this before with cmits of other mixers. They said no, but I am guessing that those mixers had older mics.
  9. GC has always had deplorable ethics regarding how their employees earn their wages. Having worked there while in school, I can say that their entire system is set up to pay less than minimum wage if they can get away with it, while somehow rewarding the most dishonest people, usually in a management or supervisor position. Lets not forget that the customers best interest is not on their minds either. Rather, they try to sell customers items that give the seller the most markup points, rather than the product best suited to their individual needs. It really is a horrible company and I think everyone should try their best to avoid spending their money there.
  10. +1 for post toll and writing sound reports to all media for the 788T. -I'd also like to see a 16 input 20 channel 7 series Sound Devices machine. I'd like it to have a mixing panel available, be compatible with CL-Wifi (and allow a hard wired version to the tablet instead of being wireless). Caddy style SSD drive and card reader (with CF, SD, etc. options) slots. -I'd love to see better options for remoting antennae with lossless options. Rf Venue has an interesting but very expensive option, there really aught to be other ways of doing this. -Lectrosonics Venue 1.2 (updated version one venue with old style modules) with aes and dante out. Aso with antenna power jumper settings in the menu or as a button.
  11. I purchased a refurb macbook ten years ago and it's still working just fine, though it is stuck in the past since the processor will not allow me to upgrade the OS (and subsequently apps) past a certain point. The latest version of Pro-Tools I can run on it is 7.1 but that's fine for my needs
  12. I dont think a school should be held accountable if some of their students or former students took it upon themselves to do things their own way despite the rules set by the school. This is an outside project. My audio school shouldn't be held accountable if I dont wrap a cable over-under despite what they taught me lol.
  13. I don't use Zaxcom products other than the IFB100 and ERXs, but my experience pertains to a similar situation, which is the 788T and CL-Wifi. The arguments that you present are mostly parallel to my own. Benefits: -Easy to rename files and take notes -Looks cool Disadvantages: -Relying on a consumer product -Is wireless, but eats up battery, so must remain plugged in! -When a disconnect occurs, it is always at the worst time, and takes too long to reconnect So in short, I understand exactly what you are talking about, and appreciate the extensive write up! I use the CL-WIFI strictly for cart jobs, but always keep a hardwired keyboard readily available because the wireless connection is too unreliable. But cart bling can be a positive thing when impressing clients, so sometimes these things are worth the hassle. My two cents.
  14. Mikes posts are important because as more and more people new to the business make their presence known, they fail to grasp the simplest concepts of being involved in a technical field. And that is quite simple: do your own research, read the manual, and contact those whom can help you best; the manufacturer. Also, sometimes it is not the tool but he/she who weilds it. If you expect to work in a technican field and be taken seriously, being able to do your own googling should be the least of requirements. The inability of which to do even that makes guys who can do basic soldering look like demigods, and we all know that any Utility must be able to do that. Senator, you were often annoying and overbearing, but you carried an important message that needs to be reinforced. Come back, and maybe just be a little more tactful.
  15. It surprises me how little people care about this sort of thing as the "turn it up" movement continues. I also question how valid nature preserves are if they allow so much human noise around them. Those in and near Los Angeles come to mind specifically.
  16. I use a comtek as a PL back to the Boom Op via MM1
  17. I use a k-tek shark "t bar" as an antenna boom. Typically I mount the mini mite on the top of the boom and mast in the center. But sometimes, in the case of a low sealing, I'll fit it underneath pointing downward on one side or another, wherever it won't be in the way of people. As long as it is vertical it is technically positioned correctly, whether it is pointing up or down is relatively indifferent, though how high it is in the air may also factor in to your results. If you require mote range or performance you may consider this as an option.
  18. Have not tried that, but the bst 75-216 comes with the option 7 antenna and I have used it without the mini mite with good success, though the range was not quite as good as with the mini mite. Why dont you give it a test and report back? I'd be interested to know.
  19. I use Loons as well, and +1 to what Rado said. One of mine didn't come with the wing on the logo too. Not a deal breaker. I still love these poles, and so do my boom ops. Hope it grows on you!
  20. Working with the mini for the first time today. Our AC says that in his experience, it has trouble taking tc in the beginning of the day. Pretty random. I couldn't jam it from my 633 in the morning, but here at lunch it worked just fine. Nothing changed on either end, so I say it's ghosts. Or they got the camera out before a solid firmware version.
  21. I think I tend to agree with what's being said here. Despite the advantages of being able to rent out some lesser used things, I think I would rather support the rental houses who always have me at their best interest. Sometimes I rent from or to other people in the community that I know and trust, but by and large, the idea of getting something that doesnt work and there being no available backup scares me. Not everyone takes as good of care of their gear as I do, and a real rental house will find you a a replacement and run it out to you if it is a real emergency and they do not have another one of that item in stock. So I guess this would be a "use at your own risk" sort of deal.
  22. This looks great, I would love to have one on my cart! My only issue: AC Power only. Ive invested a lot onmoney to keep my cart DC, because realistically I am not always afforded the luxury of getting a line of power before we need to get started on the first shots. Power will inevitably arrive at some point, but I need to be able to operate on my battery system when AC power is not available. What are the chances of Tascam making a DC version? I see there is the regular version and a dual power version, but it looks like both are AC only.
  23. Interesting, but I see a few things that are red flags in my book: -2.4 gHz, and only at 30mW power. My IFB100 operates at 100mW and I am constantly fighting Teradeks and Follow Focuses. -Internal rechargeable batteries mean limited lifespan and no ability to replace batteries when they run out on a long day. Not to mention thst, though these are less expensive than a Zaxcom system, they aren't really offering up anything new that is not already on the market. My .2
