  1. Quick answer: With short cables, you can use regular XLR cables. If you’re going longer, you want to look at getting specific AES cables. The whole internet is full of discussions on the subject. Just Google it.
  2. Thank you guys . All very good info. It is always helpful to try to understand a problem from the perspectives of both sides. I feel some things still don’t add up. For example; how can it be that they are spending more than they make in 2023? It has been slow since January. Many Productions already came to a halt in the beginning of the year- before the WGA strike even started. I guess it was anticipated…? But the question remains - if everything is shut down, where is the money being spent? Bonuses for those who made bad decisions and did the over spending ? lol
  3. Yes, those are good points Paul. Not sure where you are getting those numbers from, but it seems to be in direct contradiction to what I have seen: "Revenue in the Video Streaming (SVoD) market is projected to reach US$39.25bn in 2023. Revenue is expected to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2023-2027) of 8.63%, resulting in a projected market volume of US$54.66bn by 2027." Source: https://www.statista.com/outlook/dmo/digital-media/video-on-demand/video-streaming-svod/united-states ==== "Year Streamers % of all U.S. adults 2021 214.8 million 90% 2022 214.9 million 89% 2023 240.2 million 93% With 93 percent adoption, streaming platforms now have more than double the base of traditional cable TV (which has dropped to 40 percent of American adults). No longer an emerging or complicated technology, more than 90 percent of every generation uses video streaming platforms." Source: https://cordcutting.com/research/state-of-streaming-report/ ==== "Nearly 9 in 10 U.S. households now use video streaming services, and Americans are projected to contribute just under $40 billion to video streaming revenue this year." "Since Disney’s in-house streaming service launched in 2020, it’s already grown by more than 100 million subscribers." Source: https://www.tvscientific.com/insight/streaming-services-statistics ==== "The US, as the largest SVOD market globally, will generate $39.2 billion in revenue this year, and continue growing by a CAGR of 8.6% between 2023-2027, resulting in a projected market volume of $54.6 billion." "As the second-largest globally, the Chinese market will see an average growth rate of 10.1% in this period, with SVOD revenues rising from $19.4 billion to $28.5 billion. The UK follows, with almost $5.5 billion in revenue by 2027 and a four-year CAGR of 8.9%." Source: https://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2023/06/06/research-streaming-revenue-to-hit-95-3bn-in-2023/ ==== Then on the other hand... could this be what is calculated into the current quarterly losses?: "The “streaming wars” between the media giants Netflix, Apple, Amazon, and Hulu have pushed the media industry’s content cash spending to record highs. Over the past five years, media companies splashed out close to $445 billion on video content in five years, all in a race to grow their viewership." 4. Right, but someone pointed out that 10% of one CEO's salary could pay for everything that all of the writers were asking for... Now if that is true or not, I can't verify.
  5. Yeah, I know. I just had to vent some built up sarcasm, haha! But seriously - I am thinking about how all of this, including the strikes, affects not just us, but the overall economy... everywhere. In the news it looks it's the writers and the actors striking, but I wonder how many "normal" people understand that this means nobody else in any of the other crafts and departments are working. I mean, how many people watch the credits after a movie - all of those hundreds of names scrolling by are ...... JOBS. Now when all of those jobs are not there, those people are not making money, which in turn means they are not spending money. A production is literally like a small town, with everything from food services to transportation, medics, police officers, housing and tons of other things that aren't directly obvious, but this type of stand-still must have some real ripple effects. One exec literally said on camera that they will ride this out until people start losing their homes. I'm pretty sure they will start losing subscribers, if they haven't already, because streaming services will be pretty low on the priority list when you are struggling to pay the rent/mortgage and put food on the table. Especially if there is nothing new to watch.
  6. Similar as here in the US. Those poor streaming service companies have to pay their CEOs billions of $, which means they are struggling to pay anyone to make new "content", which means they will probably have go out of business soon. So sad....
  7. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tiny-japanese-factory-handcrafting-11-220000809.html Interesting story…. hmmm, I thought Sony was supposed to be one of those “evil corporations”.
  8. Actually, no I have not. Only one Audinate AVIO 2x XLR-M analog outputs.
  9. That’s definitely a low price for a POE switch running on 12v! Looks pretty similar to the one I use: LINOVISION Industrial 5 Ports Gigabit Solar POE Switch with DC12V-48V to DC48V Voltage Booster,4 x IEEE802.3af/at 30W POE Ports @120W, IP40, Compact POE Power for Solar Power/RV Truck/VoIP Systems https://a.co/d/idsxBkL I plugged it in and it just worked. POE automatically turned on for the port that needed it . It is really compact, but constructed very well with a solid feeling metal chassis. (FWIW - I believe both of these are knockoffs of a TrendNet switch). Did some pretty extensive research, but I have not found an unmanaged switch that allows turning off the “green” function. And they all seem to have EEE built in these days. Funny because Audinate recommends using an unmanaged switch, but no EEE. All that said, I have not had any Dante problems with my setup. Perhaps I have just been lucky, or (and I’m just guessing here), the relatively small setup within my cart may not have enough going on for it to be an issue, but it might be if you’re running a facility with multiple rooms and/or upwards of 100 channels. - Or is it possible that these switches have become smarter about EEE functions, compared to back when Audinate first rolled out Dante? I don’t know, so I don’t want to make any recommendations that might get someone else in trouble. Proceed with caution and make sure you do your own research and testing. You know: YMMV.
  10. Haha! For reference - I studied German for 3 years while in school in Sweden, my wife is Japanese, and I have visited Greece 4 times (not for work). I also visited Germany once. Back to the topic... I was lucky enough to keep afloat for the first half of the year. Then it abruptly stopped (worked a grand total of zero days in July). Picking up a few small things now. Hoping negotiations will get resolved, and the strikes will end soon!
  11. About as much related as the German and Japanese languages LOL
  12. The link seems to not work anymore. Did anyone save this, or have a diagram showing how to wire this? Thanks! EDIT: Never mind. Found it. https://www.lectrosonics.com/accessory-links/product/mute.html There's a PDF linked on that page in case anyone else is looking for this.
  13. Depends on what you are trying to do exactly. If all you need is a couple extra line inputs, maybe check out the Audinate AVIO offerings. The true beauty of Dante is (IMHO) if you were to get a wireless receiver with Dante, such as a DSQD - then you'll have 4 channels on one single cat-6 cable instead of 4x XLR cables, with the bonus of freeing up four XLR inputs (mic-pre or line) on the 888.
  14. Keep your short pole for backup/travel/ENG etc., but if you are getting Boom Op gigs, you will need a long pole. At least 16-18ft. The long pole can be used at shorter distances too (just don't extend more than you need), but a short pole may leave you in an awkward situation if you can't reach the action where you need a few more feet. K-Tek and Ambient are my personal favorites, but it's like with everything else - personal preferences. You are in LA, so just go to one of our friendly "usual suspects"; Location Sound Corp. Trew or Audio Dept. check some poles out in person and get a feel for what might be different between them, and pick the one you like.
  15. Keep us posted on how that works out for you! True, the Pulse tents are not cheap, but they are heavy duty work tents, made in USA from urethane coated polyester ---> waterproof, mildew resistant, UV protected, flame retardant. Also, they don't have a "floor", which may help in case you need to move quickly.
  16. Seems like something is off. I use 6061, which is more of a "low sensitivity" version of 6060. I keep my Tx around 24-25, so you should most likely be around where your COS11 was, possibly even lower. 6060 is known for having a very low noise floor, possibly the lowest of any lav mic. - Just my opinion, but micro-dots are fragile, and just silly unless you regularly need to use the mics with a variety of transmitters. I would recommend returning the adapters, and have the mics re-terminated with TA5 connectors specific to your SMV. -Also, your profile says you're in SoCal.... I would highly recommend talking to our "usual suspects" here in L.A: Location Sound Corp., Trew, Audio Dept. They are pro sound shops, and will take care of you and can better recommend things related to pro sound equipment than B/H.
  17. Saw this watching the morning news and really enjoyed the way they presented the story. Iconic, and you will recognize it even if you had no idea. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/an-iconic-hollywood-sound-effect-called-the-wilhelm-scream-was-uncovered-in-an-archive/
  18. Jim, things may have changed. YMMV etc. I only know what happened when I ordered a Digi002 Protools interface from SW back in the day. Before they even shipped it, some guy started calling, and kept calling weekly “to make sure that I had everything I needed”, trying to sell all kinds of stuff to go along with the 002 …. from cables to mics to external pre-amps, speakers, sound proofing etc etc. Yeah…. that was quite a while ago, but it turned me off so much that I would never consider buying from them again.
  19. The website is still up. There was however a pretty long thread in one of the FB groups recently that seemed to indicate a lot of problems since ownership had changed (I think maybe last year?) Apparently the new owner has no background in our business.
  20. “Foggier Window” by Monkish in Torrance. Delicious. Probably the best hazy IPA have ever tasted.
  21. You can still boost trim levels of ch 7-11 on the 664 as well, by going into each fat channel and using the Select knob to adjust trim.
  22. Are you using the direct outs? If so, you are basically using the preamps on the 552 to drive inputs 7-11 on the 664. The direct outs on the 552 should be set to pre-fader. If this is what you are doing, use the trim knobs on the 552 to boost the level.
  23. Yeah….. Kester 44 Solder Wire, 63/37 0.031-in, RMA Rosin, 1-ounce Tube is $12.50 on Amayzon. I’m sticking to that, an open window, holding my breath and hoping for the best lol.
  24. Well, the headphones / cable is also the antenna...
