  1. Scary story - I had a virus on a PC which was very persistent but not initially totally destructive, and managed by some fairly convoluted means to recover from it. Are you PC or Mac? PC I guess as I've never heard of a virus that can do that to a Mac? How did the virus wipe the drives, overwriting them multiple times or making them inaccessible? Did that include the boot drive? Did you try means to recover the drives if so what? What was the name of the virus? Do you know how the virus was contracted? Did the virus attempt to communicate anything about it's activities?
  2. Interesting thanks. Have you had a chance to evaluate the Super CMIT? I'd be interested to know how you think it compares? thanks.
  3. Head up display for metering / menus / matrix and video, remote control, very lightweight, very low power consumption, speech recognition, full input / output / headphone / playback matrix, flying input / breakout boxes, pick up and use like a shoulder mount camera, no more strapping oneself in to monster rigs....... dream on.......
  4. 'Sound Devices' - ah well must be some other meaning! reliable and sensible sound business/company
financially sound
sound understanding
 sound heart
sound mind
 sound building
structurally sound
sound sleep
 sound punishment

  5. Ha ha I don't carry on much either and have had two bags delayed at separate times but hate carrying gear that means you're likely to get pulled to one side at security, and battle with competition for overhead locker space etc. If no air travel is involved I use the large version of one of these to drop my whole bag 788T / CL8, rack, etc. in in one easy hit, zip up the lid and its well enough protected for all but a serious misadventure .... ARRI Production Bag (Large) http://arribags.com/...uction_bags.php I've done it for years, the bags last very well and there's room for a number of accessories - adapters, backup cables, raincover etc. Works very well for me. If airtravel is involved I mostly use a large Explorer case particularly if the excess is charged by the number of cases rather than weight. http://www.explorercases.com
  6. I was a bit snooty when this thread started but now I'm emailing Kleen Slate for a European outlet Thanks folks....
  7. Maybe you've seen these already but may be of interest if you haven't. There's a variety of D tap adapters - one plugs in and simply transfers through and makes the socket available again whilst giving a cable tap, a PCX-3, but it's not terribly clear on the website. There's a variety of other possibilities. http://www.hawkwoods.com/products/cables_and_plugs/power_con_cables_and_plugs/power_con_cables_and_plugs.php?mainMenuItemToSlide=11
  8. Leave mixer/recorder on if less than half an hour clear break as slow to shut down/start up. Power down receivers and other gear if more than 10 minutes but they come back up fast! A power saving strategy of sorts. Try not to run my lithium NP1's flat.
  9. This place appears to have them - Retail Stores - UK Jackson's Art Supplies 1 Farleigh Place London N16 7SX Tel: 0870 241 1849 www.jacksonsart.co.uk http://www.jacksonsa...oduct_info.html http://www.sofftart....cts.html#knives or the Distributor: Premium Art Brands Ltd Creativity House 5 Charingworth Drive, Hatton Park WARWICK, CV35 7SY Tel: 01926 492213 Email: info@premiumartbrands.com www.premiumartbrands.com or a list - http://www.sofftart.com/international_united.html
  10. None of the above but because some of my work I get through camera people and they can have their own weird and wonderful prescriptive ideas of how much gear you should have and how to do the job and can get to make the choice with the production company of who they work with. The complexity of potential demands on the sound department has slowly crept up and the the amount of gear needed to cover this of course increases but many think it's just a boom and a radio mic. and wonder why you've got so many cases!
  11. I've lost work because I've had too much gear! I try not to get too carried away with 'just in case'.
  12. PM? Is it not for public consumption then? I was thinking I'd like to give it a try and quite likely some others too .....?
  13. JWSOUND is a really great resource, very well run, and very generous of you - but what would happen if for some reason you didn't fancy carrying on with it, would someone else perhaps have to start something similar from scratch or would it be possible to hand it on in some way? The thread got me wondering about this, as RAMPS just existed in newsgroup ether and wasn't moderated.
  14. Yes quite a robust (comic?) style of argument but a glimpse of a tiny modicum of restraint with the 'sh*t' concession to those of more delicate sensibility? And yes there was unfortunately a tendency to descend quite quickly in to the somewhat puzzling phenomenon of ugly, nasty, unprovoked flame warfare which was not so funny. So you're probably right. But a digression from topic sorry.
  15. Ah where's Oleg when you need him he'd have the definitive answer! Woops sorry not supposed to mention censorship Woops sorry not censorship maybe aesthetic exclusion? But he was the master of 'Bang for the Buck'
  16. I was surprised at that as well - the lav is supported by curling (what looks like) some stiff wire around the cable, it's on my list to try when I get a chance.
  17. pack mule reality syndrome first you feel a little wooden ........
  18. I'm often surprised by the high asking price for used equipment in America, I often find myself thinking why would I pay that price I might just as well buy new! It seems to me that in Europe depreciation for used equipment is much higher. Anyone else think this is true and have any idea why this might be?
  19. .... an experiment to try and catch the sounds of a maggot, snail and the footsteps of a centipede. says captured on tape but we know better DPA 4061? perhaps - finger held (with something wrapped round it) & 744T http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17439200 If link doesn't work I'll try to find another means - any suggestions for that - I don't think video can be posted directly here?
  20. It's a good question and I asked about 600x cards but the consensus seems to be that Zaxcom only likes 133x but I've not seen an explanation for why this is as one tends to assume that anything faster would be OK but not necessarily so with Zaxcom it seems. Zaxcom is the only manufacturer I've come across with a speed limit .... There's lots of references if you run a search on this site for 133x
  21. Well there's not much else to do between twiddling thumbs, drinking coffee, booming and operating a portable 12 track studio with a few radio mics ...
  22. On the display screen on the side of the camera when timecode is jammed a little flag appears, there is no explanation in the manual for what this little flag means (I've assumed it to mean that timecode is being received OK), but presumably someone who writes the firmware at Arri knows, I'll try to find out ......
  23. Here's another HD-SDI & composite but not too cheap at $750.00. http://www.swit.us/s5hdmo.html http://www.swit.cc/EN/product.aspx?id=276
