  1. Personally I prefer to use XLR, but it is possible to make a quite low profile RA TRS and because the connector can rotate it's 'self orientating'™. Interesting they only put combos on the mixpre-6 and not the 3.
  2. allen key and spare grub screw holder on board?
  3. and i did wonder if something like this was round the corner when they gave 633 dugan automix. I like the integrated blue tooth. not sure what's meant by 4 or 8 AAs but I guess I'll find out soon enough. Is SD's movement into this end of the market indicative of where our part of an industry is going? mixpre 6 half the weight of 633! And the USB streaming feature is a really nice touch for expanding the capability of the device.
  4. I think Audio Ltd's 1010 digital radio mic system (with TX recorder*) and now with slot-in dual RX and 100mhz switching BW would be a very interesting option for EU based operators looking to spend this kind of money. In terms of versatility you'd have put the Wisycom RX into the mix because it can be used various brands of TX. Also I don't get the impression Sennheiser is chasing after anyone else's products, concepts or sales. When you look at the quality of the systems and how long they support them I think Sennheiser is all about long term strategies and bigger markets than this 1. Eg. G3, 2000, 3000, 5000, 6000, 9000 series (and they have more wireless still and ALL there other stuff!).
  5. Yes, I know. Silica gel packs have been around since i was a kid and are very important when putting kit in hermetically sealed cases. I was just thinking out loud with regard the historical use of wooden mic boxes. Probably not so relevant but the humidity resilient MKH series has been supplied in plastic boxes for long time.
  6. Obviously a pelicase is waterproof in a way a wooden box cannot be but i've sometimes wondered if the reason mics have been historically (and are still often) sold in wooden boxes is because the wood can absorb some residual moisture or condensation the mic may have on some of its surfaces in a way a plastic case will not?
  7. "If anyone knows of a (non DIY) AA to 12V box for hirose/xlr4 machines I would love to see one and probably buy one. Kortwich perhaps? I've looked but never found." Whats wrong with putting plug of your choice on something like 1 of these?: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1PCS-AA-12V-Case-Battery-Cover-Holder-Connector-Box-Wire-Lead-for-8-Batteries-/272220074915?hash=item3f6194b3a3:g:3eYAAOSwYudXGcO0 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8-x-AA-Battery-Holder-Box-Pack-of-2-/121224708142?hash=item1c398e402e:g:ISkAAOSwX6VTxpzO http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Phottix-Flash-External-8-AA-Battery-Pack-Nikon-/401303619247?hash=item5d6f8f46af:g:JZQAAOSwTM5Y5QqB http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Godox-Flash-External-Battery-Pack-For-Canon-550EX-580EX-II-550EX-600EX-Speedlite/201278515069?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D40656%26meid%3Da67d077375e6478bbe93d225376f2fb4%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D262106502580 https://www.amazon.co.uk/C1207-1-Battery-Holder-Case-Futaba-x/dp/B00GIERGOA/ref=sr_1_62?ie=UTF8&qid=1492460762&sr=8-62&keywords=8+aa+battery+pack http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/8-aa-battery-box-rk44x
  8. I've not used this: https://www.k-tor.com/hand-crank-generator/ 1 maybe better off with a wind-up nagra: http://sounds.bl.uk/Sound-recording-history/Equipment/029M-UNCAT10XXXXX-0001V0
  9. Re: AAs - you can make a AA battery pack for almost any recorder (whether or not the recorder takes AAs). You could also make a battery pack using D cells, which would arguably make more sense as phantom powering a few mics will flatten 8 x AAs quite quickly. For majority of the time a rechargeable li-on battery will be of more use (make a AA battery pack if you really think this will be an issue). Li-ons are light, long lasting, less self discharge, flat o/p and some even include a connector (D-tap) which will save you buying a 'shoe' etc. You could even make you're own li-on battery packs using 18650s which look like AA but have twice the voltage and are also quite ubiquitous, so making them relatively cheap (if not available world wide on the scale of AAs). Some of the chargers for the 18650 batteries are USB powered so it is feasible to recharge these with a hand cranked charger. And you wouldn't need to be away from civilisation that long before carrying a hand cranked charger would be a lighter option than carrying enough AAs to give you much recording time. Of course, multiple options and redundancy would make most sense (if you have the capacity to carry them). Btw the 'L' series batteries (SD 6 and 7 series compatible) are incredibly cheap and some charges are also USB powered (therefore potentially chargeable in the field) DPAs are lovely mics (never heard this contended), but if you don't have to rig the mic on a human then the OKMs sound very close and maybe the phantom powered 'Clippy' similar. Not much stereo information at 60hz so could fill this part of the spectrum in with a single condenser mic if required eg. an 8040 or (LDC). The bigger size of the OKM (and Clippy) is not going to be a problem for ambient recording where you'll probably have to dress the mic in some way to protect it from wind anyway. But I'm guessing this will read like sacrilege to some. A pair of new 4060s is going to set you back 6-800gbp and as SMJ mentions in his article, lapel mics are to an extent "regarded as expendable" eg. they wont hold there value like a larger mic. This is good if you're buying S/H, not so good if you decide to resell a pair you bought new. If the cost of the DPAs rule out buying an MKH series (or similar) but the OKM allow you to get an MKH as well, then for me it's a no brainer.
  10. This is an interesting problem. Given the mic doesn't need to be moved when recording I wonder if it is possible to fabricate (or buy) an appropriately designed 'tent'? Eg. It doesn't make flappy sounds in the wind and is transparent enough for nice recording. Eg. Plus 1 of these for high winds (-:
  11. Imho, not worth it. Less 'Into the Wind' more a guy gassing on about himself while camera op does his best to make a flat landscape look interesting. I kept thinking about Casper David Fredericks for some reason I'm not sure I could explain - maybe as there seemed to be an aspiration to encompass some meditative romantic element but it never got there for me. I don't even remember noticing much about the wind recording except for a bit at the end which faded into music (yergh!)
  12. Just watched this on iplayer. Kind of wish I'd not posted about it - not my sort thing at all :-)
  13. it was on another thread: http://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/topic/29575-bbc-doc-about-recording-the-wind/
  14. Thanks, what you say is interesting. I was quite tempted at 1 point with r88 but the deal breaker for me was the attitude of the UK representatives. They seemed to know nothing about the device and care even less to find out. I knew Roland had/have bigger fish to fry than support in anyway a prosumer devices so I stayed away. Not sure what the resell on your r88 will be now zoom have F4/8 in the market but I wouldn't put much effort in keeping the thing a viable work machine. Sell or lend to friend, right off the loss and be thankful it got you to the next stage of your career.
  15. 1998: Sony Walkman pro, Sony ECM 957. 2001-2: SD302, MKH60, Audio Limited 2020, Sony UWP, Cos-11, VDB (m), Petrol bag, MDR7506, HD25s
  16. Nice find. If I didn't own an OKM pair I'd give these things a go. LoPro XLRs probably not suitable for most users but they would help keep the footprint of a compact set-up to a minimum. The OKM pair I have are terminated in a mini jack but I have an adapter box of theirs (A3-XLR), so they go easily into a DSLR's or a handheld's 3.5 or a bigger recorder with XLRs. This worked nicely with my busman/tascam DR680 - which is of it's time but had some nice features regarding ganging channels, O/Ps and ISOs. Btw are you travelling with monitors (to listen back without HPs)?

  18. A microphone causing a problem for an aircraft is the opposite of the usual relationship. Obviously not advocating this tho.
  19. F4 good enough for wild, atmos, SFX etc. It's not like you'll have AD next to you saying they "wont go again" and you can buy 2 new 1s for the price of 1 s/h 7 series. Need quiet mics for ambience - Sennheiser MKH series, MKH40 or 50 would be my choice (as I like the switches) and good wind protection. I would also find something I can use discreetly. Eg a spaced pair or binaural with DPA4060 or OKM Soundman binaurals (which can be used as a spaced pair). Might be worth including a decent handheld to give you something you can pocket as well as the F4 (in the bag). You'll get some redundancy and if you go with T. Duffy's recommendation of a DR-44WL you get geo-tagging and maybe a quick way to upload to social media etc. Whole thing sounds like fun, if/when you make it to the steppes of Hackney PM if you want a beer.
  20. On the line i/ps as well as through the mic pres?
  21. Can it be described? eg. smoother, fuller, clearer, warmer etc.
  22. Sounds better when you're using it or after it's been through post?
  23. Maybe hiring an EK2000 receiver for the G3 stick is out of the question but that's everything in 1 box. Ie RX and HP.
