  1. A follow up to the original MTV gig, I got a call from the PM yesterday and she said they ended up flying a mixer in. Too funny. On a funnier note, she asked me to work a different date, same show, but B-crew instead of A-crew. Then she offered me $1500 for the day with no wireless and no Comteks. Just MTR, slate, and mics on stands. Funny that A-crew could be working for half the price of B-crew, plus having to deal with all the wireless. Needless to say, I took it. Nothing like a set it and forget it type of day.
  2. How about that producer that calls you(the sound mixer) asking for synced audio and video by the end of the shoot. I said no problem, my DIT is open this weekend so if you can pay him his rate, he'd be more than happy to sync the clips. They say oh that's ok we'll just take care of it on my end.. Producers always trying to pinch a penny. I gotta give them credit, their requests get more and more interesting every day.
  3. Just got a call today for the same gig. I'll take it if they tack on a few hundred more dollars. With the shoot being 2.5 days away, maybe they will..
  4. I'm using one of these: http://www.tivoliaudio.com/the-pal-black.html
  5. Excellent work! Does the fan make a noticeable difference? If the fan is for exhaust, where is the cool air coming in from?
  6. I've used the WD Caviar Black drives for a few years now with zero complaints. No fails, no hiccups.
  7. As a rule I always leave at least one buckle on my pelican case snapped close. On a shoot last week we were getting ready for a take and I see a producer out of the corner of my eye go into my pelican and have a look(for what, I have no idea). We finished the shot and started to head inside, when the same producer decides on his own to help take gear inside. Of course he picks up my pelican by the handle, and everything flies out all over the grass, because he didn't snap it shut after he went snooping around through my gear, most likely having no idea about anything in there anyway. I kindly told him that I could take care of my own cases. Maybe I need some new stickers on there: PRODUCERS DO NOT TOUCH
  8. He will live on forever.
  9. <HAT> When something isn't working properly on a newly purchased piece of gear, it's easy to think there's a quick fix, or some user error. It's far harder to believe that you might have to send your new gear back to the manufacturer. It's usually the latter.
  10. No tricks. It is known that the search function of this site could work better, but most of us are content searching Google. Just type your keywords, followed by "jwsoundgroup".
  11. I'll probably end up doing that. I might get it back in year or so..
  12. Indeed, I am using a Switchcraft 761K connector. Noise on the receiver side? That doesn't sound good. Maybe something is wrong with your DC2? I'm always looking to cut the cost of my work(batteries being a substantial cost) but not at the expense of a clicking noise.. Rado, PM sent.
  13. I guess that's always a possibility. I talked to the guy who sold it to me and he was very surprised the unit was not working. He sells AV equipment from liquidating companies, has a perfect feedback score. He says it's his first refund in 6 years. It came in Sennheiser packaging and everything looks legit. The wire leads were tinned like it was never used. I guess stuff happens. But I might try to take it apart because I demand an explanation!
  14. I bought a Sennheiser DC2 on Ebay, wired everything up and it wouldn't power any of my G3's from my Remote Audio BDS. (+ to tip, - to sleeve) I even wired it up the other way to make sure I wasn't being an idiot. Still nothing when I press the power button. I got my money refunded, so no worries there. But I still have the unit and it was brand new when I opened it. Anyone else ever have an issue with these? Is there any way to test or fix these things? A quick Google search didn't bring up any results.
  15. The ONLY reason I ever power down for run n gun situations, is either my batteries won't last or it's lunch time. I recently purchased some NP1's and distro so I should never have to power down when I'm technically working. For long setup times, it's a little different. I still prefer to stay up and running, but if I'm powering off and on throughout the day, I'd much rather have everything on 1 power switch.
  16. To update your G3's, it looks like you need the EM100 G3 rackmount receiver.. It has an ethernet port on the back. You can connect it to your computer through your network, then use Wireless Systems Manager to configure.
  17. Did a shoot yesterday at the Chrysler proving grounds with Wil Masisak(fellow sound mixer). Travis Pastrana was there for a photo shoot, but then he got into his new 600whp/550ft/lbs AWD Dodge Dart rally car, and the fun began. Got some really cool heli-shots and some nice slow-mo with a Phantam HD Gold. Of course, we captured some pretty awesome sounds..
  18. The plant needs water.
  19. Pretty cool bag. Do you happen to remember where you bought it from?
  20. Okay, I know the title might have been misleading.. I've only been doing production sound for a couple years now. I've invested in quality gear and I'm trying to learn new things about this profession every day, as it has turned out to be my passion. I take great care not to lower my rates for labor or gear to be competitive, as I completely understand that it's a terrible practice and affects sound mixers everywhere. The competition, is to get better sounding audio than other mixers. That said, I finally heard my recorded audio on TV. It was a commercial for a local furniture company(Gardner White Furniture) on our local Fox channel. I have recorded audio for a few different shows that are already green-lit and slated to appear on MTV this year, but this was my first time hearing my audio on TV. Even though it's just a commercial for a local company, I still jumped up and down like a little kid. A great feeling knowing post did their job correctly and made me look good. That's all. Just wanted to share my joy with others who have had the same experience.
  21. I have recovered lots of "deleted" footage/audio that was thought to be gone forever using free software. Simple formatting won't likely physically erase anything on a drive or card. It's all still there(unless you recorded more data over sectors that were previously occupied). Don't tell anyone if they don't need to know..
