Timecode slate: (A) Useful, or (B) Just for show?
VASI replied to Bob K's topic in General Discussion
I think the answer is the question. Both for show and useful, it depends of region - workflow etc. I have seen timecode to be fail, I have seen "end slate" and then there is no slate nor timecode; but camera is rolling to take the slate while sound no. Anyway, slate (digital and no digital) is necessary IMHO. It is also a good reminder for necessary dept. (cough!) there we are close to end of the shooting day. -
Worked an entire season, over a year; with MKH 70 + MTP 40 + PHA48 + Sennheiser Windshield / Pistol Grip; 100% for exteriors. Seems like people complain about weight and size where the thing is, the pointless to extend boompole (wide shot) in 6m to capture - what? Especially when the actors in looking like an ant in frame. Plug-on or cable is fine. Even the MTP 40 + PHA48 is fine as well with MKH 50. I would carry more about "how it sounds" compared to cable rather than if it is A10 or MTP 40 or DPR. At least you have plenty of time waiting the lighting dept. to do their work, so you get enough rest. LOL

I had a similar in cooking show with induction kitchen. When it was turned On, the signal went to black hole of Interstellar. Cable and booming was the only solution. Since then, I have stopped using Sennheiser G3 as main option. Burned once, learned once.

Actually from RX8+, not from R4+. 🙂

That is a good question for Audiotonix.

I see where you coming from, and agree. I had used 888 the other day, and adjusting the small faders was not fun - especially with -15C. I don't know why and where that trend with small things come; like mobile phones in past where everyone tried to created the smallest one - but now we have more practical sizes.

Interesting to know. Thank you for sharing! 🙏

That is trully unnecessary confusion IMHO, but at the end of the day will be: What setting to you need me to apply? 24, 25, 48, 44.1, it's your project; tell me. 😃

"Off the mark" - hehe

Hi Michael, Thank you for your comment and sorry for not giving an update. Didn't had the opportunity to play A-20 + Nexus at Visono in Sweden, due to heavy schedule. Planning to change a base from Athens to Stockholm or Oslo. 🙂 Happy to see it in action from other user and loved your tests so far with A-20. Thank you, Tack, Takk Vasileios A.

I had a play with A-20 Nexus at Visono, Sweden; yesterday. UX: The learning curve is very fast and easy to operate it; even under stressfully situations. The AutoAssign feature will be a huge welcome and will cut the "setting time" in half. Things is getting more easier via web: In laptop you can have all the transmitter settings; and in iPad (example) you can monitor the spectrum. Cool! I hope to find a time to play it (Nexus) with A-20 Transmitters and range tests with other colleagues here.

Did I wrote somewhere about I don't like some of the aspects of the Nexus? I said that was a bad promotion to location sound, IMHO. What kind of attitude, is that sir? Anyway, Paul and Sound Devices have delivered-answered my questions here and somewhere else.

Enjoy it! 🙂

Happy to hear this, Paul! Dante Output when attached to 8-Series recorder must be available IMHO. Let's say we have onset the 888 + Nexus, 888 performing as back-up - plus the ability to output the channels to main cart (Scorpio or Cantar X3) via Dante. I know that you can do already via two Dante outputs (one for 888, one for Scorpio), but will be faster setup if Nexus is being attached to 888 as an example.

Got some answers regarding these: 1. Is not waterproof resistance. "Don't submerged in water", that wasn't my question, but clear need protection. Since when Sound Devices don't know when location sound people asking about waterproof resistance what we mean? Anyway. No word about dustproof. 2. - 3. No calibration tone if you don't use 8 series recorder. It's on feature request list. 4. Sunlight performance has the same as MixPre Series. MixPre costs 2K euros, while this one costs like a new car. Anyway. 5. Glass performance (durability) is like Gorilla Glass. 6. True Diversity across 16 channels. ==== Really extreme poor advertisement-communication from Sound Devices for Production Sound Dept. here. Anyway, starting to think that SD want to be in other market - industry since merge, but this is different conversation.

Let's start with the "brains", SRb and SRc does not have AES output.
