  1. Laurie Webb @ Sound Mixers- She'll talk your ear off! 888-283-4650
  2. I suppose I'll make my donation retroactive. Hell, why not pay some forward too! Thanks for keeping such a great resource up, happy to contribute!
  3. -I'm surprised this didn't come up sooner. Unless you sign a contract in advance that designates ownership and rights to whomever, the person hitting the button is the owner... +1 to everyone suggesting to hold onto some or all files with sketchy clients. A $30 thumb drive and a stamp is cheaper than court fees. I had a sketchy client producing a feature film in which the crew received a small amount of contracted payment every Friday and a large lump sum (the second half) of pay 14 days after last days of production. Having been warned by a producer to be cautious ahead of time helped me come to the decision to withhold all sound footage until payment was made in full. I sent a scratch track to camera for dailies and to get a start on their edit, so they could still work on the project. Sure enough, when wrap came around we started hearing 'We're going to have to push payments, blah blah.' 'No problem! You can send me a hard drive with my final check and I'll return it with your mix tracks (once the check clears, of course). I was paid in full very shortly thereafter. What one could get in trouble for is if a Mixer *hypothetically* still held onto a few days of footage containing pivotal plot points/ larger actors until the REST of the crew and cast were also paid in full. In this *hypothetical* situation, the Mixer's contract stated dates by which the Mixer would be paid. Since those dates came and went beyond a reasonable range, the contract was null and void anyway, though..... Hypothetically, of course.
  4. I picked one up a couple of months ago for a short film with very little dialog (lots of nat and ambience). I paired it on top of a Sennheiser 416, choosing to leave my Sanken CS-3e at home because its brightness would not match as well as the 416's response. When playing around with dalies, I found that using a shotgun pattern created a hyped or exaggerated image in that things were very much in the center, left, or right. By this, I mean that if something was happening at the boom's 10:00 position, it had the tendency to sound more roomy than from 9:00, noon, or 3:00. I still think it was a good system, however, and wouldn't shy away from using an interference tube mic with it again. It's all about application; if you know what you're going for and position/maneuver appropriately, (coupled with the ability to properly monitor M/S) you can certainly get some great stuff. The only thing that I wasn't pleased about was the frequency response of the ATE. There were some definite gaps across the spectrum which left me wanting for more mids especially. I'd be interested to see how the Schoeps and Sennheiser models compete...
  5. Thanks Bernie, Patrick! I have a feeling I'll be popping back and forth a bit. Trying to be the best fish I can :-)
  6. That makes dailies tough to sort out. If you routed a G3 (or even a comtek, as I sometimes do) to an output on the 788 (I usually do tracks L+R together). A benefit in my eyes to using a comtek is that if forces the post team to sync up with the 788 recording to get full fidelity. Since it's just a guide track, the dialog has to be easy to hear, but not top notch. Any director or editor with worthwhile experience is going to be able to ignore a higher noise floor when listening to dailies, just as they can look past a low resolution on the video. Keep jamming is you have been or start if you haven't, it's just one more level of redundancy guaranteeing that the editors won't screw anything up.
  7. @Pablo, are those Kortwich XLR's or just modded? I've been looking for good standard and mini connectors with low profiles for my bag.
  8. Everything except the trannies married to the units you're investigating.
  9. Thanks Laurence, that's much closer to what I was trying to convey. Really, I'm making an effort to improve the guaranteed quality of productions in which I am involved. I want to spend my time being challenged with and honing my craft with other people who are working to do the same. I see getting involved with an organization dedicated to enabling this in a city founded upon this industry as one task on a long list of things I'm going to do to achieve my goals. Maybe what I should have said is that getting involved with the union will enable me to help myself find or otherwise gain access to better work. Insurance and protected rates are fantastic quality of life bonuses, but I'm finding out that satisfaction with my work and role in society has become a higher priority at this point in my life. I make enough in Minneapolis to live comfortably, but I'm not as challenged or learning as much as I'd like often times.
  10. I'm moving out from Minneapolis to Los Angeles mid-April. I'm making this move to get more and different types of work. I usually mix out of the bag on doc, reality, commercial and narrative jobs equally. I'm also interested in getting involved in the union for the sake of picking up more work. Do any of you LA locals have suggestions for me, starting over? Of course I have some LA connections in the industry, but I'd also like to find work as boom operator and utility. I've been doing this for five years, but I'd be really happy to learn from others as well. Thanks in advance!
  11. Just decided to change it up myself. Made stops to the 'Container Store' and local military surplus place. Found this M.O.L.L.E. style pouch that I can clip to my belt and counterweigh my 788 a bit. Had enough room for accessories (in a AAA battery case) and tape/moleskin/etc. as well. Not pictured is the belt bungee with tape rolls. I also clip a gerber 'Dime' multi-tool via carabiner to my bag for cutting up tape, etc. That Lowel Pro wallet does look good though... -TC
  12. I've been a bag mixer in MN for four years, but have mainly been working solo. I'll be visiting LA from April 9-14 and am looking to make the trip educational. I'm sure 90% of the work going on there is union, but I'd love to volunteer utility/boom for someone for a day or two while I'm out there so I can learn a thing or two. Any takers? I'm also planning on paying a visit to Trew and Coffey. Does anyone have suggestions for other places to check out?
  13. Format. I would think that it's similar to a battery cell. Since there's current running through these bits of silicon, it would be better to have them regularly conditioned to hold and not hold current. You know how it's better to run your lithium batteries dry and charge fully whenever possible? I imagine that this can be applied to flash media.
