  1. Well I hope Apple have made significant improvements to Finder which I 'find' truly horrible. One of the most basic components of an operating system and I cannot believe how bad it is ....... Wake up Apple and look back at the basics
  2. http://www.facebook.com/notes/rycote/the-effect-of-using-a-foam-inside-basket-windshield-by-chris-woolf/10150253661956774
  3. I've used a second wind jammer wrapped around the handgrip and held in place by rubber bands and pushed tight up against the opening at the bottom of the top windjammer, along with a windsock underneath the jammer and found this helps. Also the condition of the windjammer makes quite a difference - nice new long fine hairy ones are significantly better. I've also put a foam on the mic inside the basket.
  4. Very useful. Not the same thing but similarities reminded me of this, a variation on the theme - Operates on 1 to 6 NP1 Batteries - http://www.hawkwoods.com/products/details/details.php?code=apd&mainMenuItemToSlide=5&asi=mr4&asi2=np-65
  5. My (somewhat hazy) understanding is that seeing a hard disk from DOS is possible through the BIOS (IDE etc.) and the hard disk is effectively hard wired to the motherboard but seeing a flash card (via a card reader) needs USB or Firewire input enabled and I don't think that's possible in DOS as these are enabled by a more recent operating system eg. Windows (on top of DOS). Perhaps someone else knows if this is correct? But thanks for the suggestion.
  6. Thanks I've got two card readers both Sandisk one USB and one firewire and both work with other cards so I think readers probably OK. I got this reply promptly from Transcend - however the autoformat tool suggested does not work as the card cannot be seen by the operating system but replacement looks promising - Dear Customer,First of all, many thanks for your letter.1. Please kindly download the AutoFormat tool from the following links:http://www.transcend.com.tw/Products/AutoFormatTool/AutoFormatTool_Software.asp* Note : this step will erase all the data in memory card. 2. If the problem is still not resolved, please kindly take the product with receipt to the original retailer and ask for a repair or replacement service. To obtain services from an authorized Transcend partner, please refer to http://www.transcendusa.com/Contact/CuPartner.asp and find the nearest in your region. It's our responsibility to remind you, some distributors will charge service fee in compliance with their policy or may not provide services when the product is not purchased from them. 7. Interesting idea I'd be interested in that.
  8. I'm beginning to think that, although the two Transcend 32GB cards I have have been OK for 3 years.
  9. Thanks Matt I've submitted a request to Transcend.
  10. Thanks Justin, nothing shows up in Disk Utility (I tend to blame OSX for not formatting the card correctly without saying it couldn't but as I've already said I suppose the card could have been on it's way out and couldn't take another format) The card reader shows up in System Profiler - ImageMate 14 in 1 Reader/Writer : Product ID: 0xb4b5 Vendor ID: 0x0781 (SanDisk Corporation) Version: 93.39 Serial Number: 0304025563 Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec Manufacturer: SanDisk Location ID: 0xfd140000 Current Available (mA): 500 Current Required (mA): 500 but no change when the card is inserted. Same result with a Sandisk firewire card reader I've tried - actually that reminds me it was the firewire card reader that I was formatting the card with when it failed. Although there's never been any other problem with that Sandisk Firewire 800 reader/writer. Looks like the card is faulty but odd it should occur when being formatted by OSX which makes me wonder whether there might be some way to see it, a Unix terminal command perhaps?
  11. Thanks Justin and Jon - No cannot be seen by disk utility or system profiler. Yes the Fusion appears to see it (but can't do anything with it) - I wonder if it's simply a physical presence detector in the Fusion rather than actually having any interaction with anything on the card. And yes Jon I agree in production terms definitely not worth risking but I was intending it as a backup - ditching 32Gb cards is a slightly expensive habit......... And funny thing is that OSX didn't complain, appeared to format it and then it would not mount, so I naturally tend to blame OSX though of course it could be a co-incidence and the card was on it's last legs anyway. Though it had been working fine.
  12. Thanks Damien, I'm not trying to recover any files though (just trying to make the card usable) and all the recovery software as far as I can see has a pre-requisite that the card can be mounted to start with.
  13. I routinely went to format one of my 32Gb Transcend compact flash cards using OSX 10.6.6 disk utility - selecting MS DOS FAT (which means FAT32) and it wrecked it. I was formatting it for use in my 744T which is happy with OSX FAT32 formatted cards. I know the Fusion has it's own version of FAT32 and is not happy with other versions. There seems to be several flavors of FAT32 which I've never seen an explanation for? Anyway the card cannot be mounted in OSX, cannot be seen by Windows 7 disk administration, will not mount on SD or Zaxcom Fusion (FAT32 mirror/backup slot) Just tried formatting it in the MARF slot just but says 'formatting - please wait until format is complete' forever. I've googled, and found Apple support notes http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26941?viewlocale=en_US which doesn't work. Come across Mount Me! which doesn't work. "Mount Me! force-mounts physical disks that refuse to mount on your system" http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/8100/mount-me!-x Any suggestions please for any chance to rescue the card? Seems there's not much hope if the card cannot be seen by anything. My Fusion recognizes a card has been inserted but just says 'mounting' forever, and can via the menu offer to format it but just says 'formatting' forever. The 744T blinks the CF LED continually but will not mount the card. Anyone else format cards in anything other than the machine they're intended to be used in? Think I won't again! Anyone know of any low level forensic magic voodoo for re-awakening cards from the dead thanks Mick
  14. Where do you get your very hairy windjammer please? thanks Mick
  15. That'd be a pity as far as I'm concerned as I regard it as a fairly crucial piece of information and I've found it quite odd that, as you say, it's not implemented on my Fusion. One would imagine that it could, as you suggest, be implemented in software. Anyone ever had any dialogue with Zaxcom about this? I know consult the manufacturer myself ......... But I sort of am as Glenn started the thread. Mick
