  1. Hmm, my understanding was that the shift to scientific notation allowed us to effectively, shift the 32bit window where ever we liked (post recording) within the 1500dB (odd) window. The ADC and microphone will absolutely be the limiting factor and could be done in 24bit, but that's not to say there isn't a clear benefit from not having to gain stage at all until you need to in post. There a quite a few scenarios where we've become pro's at getting the best from the technical limitations of the gear but it would be better not to have that limit or at least to have the option to bypass it if you want. In radio transmitters in particular, the ability to control the 32bit window on the recorder is a very very useful tool. Maybe it just fits well within my day to day (drama) workflow I guess but not trying to predict gain/performance/sfx explosions and setting levels accordingly is a clear benefit (esp with the patchy nature of the tx remote controls).
  2. Thanks Roland, I stand corrected (on at least the theory). Strangely, I thought It was Chris who had originally mentioned the dead space as a buffer zone, but cant seem find anything to reference that. I did in fact find this from Chris "Please remember that the efficiency of a windshield is not the "still air volume" - it is the distance of the capsule from the perimeter, and closely follows a cube power of that distance. Even slightly smaller windshields are inevitably less good purely because of this - physics decrees it."
  3. The "dead space' is there to allow the air time too slow down before hitting the diaphragm after coming through the basket and windjammer, You can easily push a mic up against the end but you will then get more problems with wind noise.
  4. Hi In this case the short XLRF-XLRM cables will be wired 1->1, 2->2, 3->3 as you suggested above, 1 is ground, 2 is +,3 is - . Senneheiser G4's are not balanced. The correct pin connections will be here on page 138 . Follow the guide for Line level connections. https://assets.sennheiser.com/global-downloads/file/10318/ew_500P_G4_Manual_v2-3_07_2020_EN.pdf Outputs are the same for the XLR -->XLR (1-1, 2-2, 3-3) for the speaker. The output to G4 TX would be tip and sleeve to shield, positive to ring, wire the XLR as normal. For short cables in the bag any small 2 core microphone cable will probably do, Mogami, Canare etc all do good stuff, For the longer connections and the Boom in particular try and use star quad cable. Good luck

    Wisicom as hop. .

MCR42? Check the firmware. A couple of versions back, 3.6 I think. There was an bug in the line out levels that produced the same symptoms for me. Fixed by moving to a later version. You can output a tone at 0dbFS and line the transmitter directly to that (below clipping point), might help. At least that was you'll be using the limiters on the nomad first;)
  6. If you don't know, why say anything? Anyway, it's incredibly common to radio and boom over this side of the pond. It has been for years. Precisley because it gives people like yourselves a better chance in post. Mark Wielages point above is correct. The PSM and post team where not at fault at all. It was an directorial and artistic decision and a broadcasting fault that led to the outcry. Perhaps that example is not the one to use for your very valid point about intelligibility no?
  7. Mark, given the huge amount of experience of everyone on that show, what do you think went wrong? I can vouch for the PSM using radio's on everything that breathed on other projects. I have to assume there where radio's on or a very very good reason for them not being. Do you know different?
  8. If +12dBu on the output of the wisy is full range and the only option is attenuation. The total noise added is the gain from the 633, so 6db. I'd imagine you would hear the self noise of the mic before anything the 633 produces.
  9. Hmm, actually its either a software bug or just bad communication on their part. What their manual refers to as "max output level" isn't as the name suggests a ceiling. It is output gain. The confusing part is that the tone (which should be a standard) is affected by the "max output level" unless I'm missing something. As they say, they best thing about standards is theres so many to choose from. Anyway, to reference correctly from the mcr42. Set the output gain to 8dbu, this should match the 633's scale (@unity) with both the -18dbu and 0db tone from the wisy.
  10. At the risk of asking the obvious questions, does tone reference correctly from the wisy to the 633?
  11. Thanks Vasileios, looks very good. Spec is about perfect for me.

    Camera Cable

http://www.daburn.com/2708-2714DAFLEXUltra-FlexibleSubminiatureShieldedCable-3.aspx 2710/5 5 conductor, braided shield. 2.24mm OD 30 awg. 30AWG should handle .9 amps un bundled. Hope that helps Good luck Nick

    Camera Cable

Is 2mm the max or is there a different collet available?
  14. Richmonds price is for the old two bay charger I think, I was told £240ish for the newer better one. They probably haven't updated their site. As an aside, accutronics does the inspired stuff and the moulded unterminated cable is about £18 from them, The difference between that and the audio root one is a four pin lemo and £50.
