The SNA600a is 2:1 only at the band edges. When defining bandwidth, the 2:1 value is a commonly accepted bandwidth definer. Inside that bandwidth, the SNA600a SWR is much lower on the order of 1.2:1. Keep in mind, a tunable bandwidth may be useful in attenuating undesired RF.  "Different horses for different courses" .

Good to know Larry, I took the data from your website, I think it would also be good to have the SWR information at its best (As Betso's should be)

    Thank you

Yes but better tuned. And if you can place it so that stuff is outside the near field it will work better.

I guess it depends on whether the 1/2 dipole is at its correct distance. The advantage that I see in the Botwie is that it is suitable for multiple frequencies at the same time and you forget about it, but at the cost of losing gain. But also according to those at Betso it has an SWR of 1.2:1 (I think it is too good ) against the 2:1 (Fair) of, for example, the Lectrosonic SNA600a. Much more efficient the Betso

I’m not an expert on this topic, and I see a lot of props for Betso Bowties so this is in no way trying to undercut those who use them successfully. But can someone explain to me in layman the difference? I’m sure there are high level variations, but the details as it would apply to real life performance.

If the bowties are in essense multiple omni dipoles in a compact configuration how would that differ greatly from a 1/2 wave wideband whip antenna? Both are omni, both can cover our usable frequencies, etc.

    Any feedback from experts appreciated?

Look in technical characteristics the gain, less than a 1/2 dipole

You are good with the Dante clock unless your system needs to follow another system's clock (in a complex set up).  If everyone goes Dante then you are probably ok.  If everyone is syncing to a master generator in a production truck etc then your console needs to have its sample rate follow that clock.

You can follow any Dante clock as master or for example with a Avio AES by AES EBU (Enable sync to external)

I have a 4minX. I hardly use it, but good to have. At some point I will sell or barter it inside EU, so, I am not advertising mine to you.

I cannot confirm the slight tone at (was it 8?)kHz. Maybe my unit is not affected or I just don't hear it. It can be notched out later anyway.

    2. The menu and overall firmware design did not reach adulthood and things like metadata, monitoring matrix, menu ergonomics and some other foo are a complete pain in film workflows. Probably much less so in music room recording, if you can prepare in advance.

It has 4 analog inputs, yes, all with 48V, but they come in two pairs with diffent dynamic ranges! Dig the specs, and compare with other brands/models mentioned in this thread. You can add more channels with an old MixPreD or Sonosax M2D2 via 2 AES pairs that also offer AES42/SRC btw.

The unit is quite big, but it is still light as they enclosed a lot of air.

The main reason why you probably won't buy a 4minX is, there is virtually no market! At least last time, I checked.

I love the 4minx, but the two units that I have, have the tone (around 1490Hz), the preamps are great but have high harmonic distortion too

The menu is very awful for drama, but for music isn't a drama

Another for the Sound Devices 788T, the best preamps I tried and measured in a battery recorder, built for last (Except the keyboard). The drawback for me is the menu (I hate it) (I'll love a harwire CL Wifi), but isn't a problem for music.

I think the cooperation between Steinberg and Yamaha is a positive example.

Well, Yamaha and Steinberg IMMO is a bad example, they have just eliminated the Nuage ecosystem, leaving their users stranded

In my opinion, there wasn't much of a market for a recorder worth more than €15,000, all the ones that had to be sold were sold.

They also made a big mistake with the Cantar Mini, they limited it too much so as not to compete with the X3, and they killed it. 10 inputs (4x mic, x2 line and 4x AES) and 16 tracks was absurd, it took a long time to get the Dante option (And I could have it from the beginning)

My feeling is with the Aaton workers, especially with Sebastian

I don't know much about it, but wouldn't Sonosax or Nagra Audio be more likely to acquire rights to Aaton?

Nagra is dead as a pro audio manufacturer, a long time ago.

Am not Philip, but my guess and my reasons why are: a lot of these mixing boards also allow basic recording functionality as well (might not be all the full tracks, might be just the stereo mix) and it would be nice to have these with TC as an emergency backup recording to your main recorder (say with BoomRecorder).

The DM3 only have a two track recorder, but in other hand thru Dante or the USB you can add several recorders, such as two SD970, or two computers

But I will try to investigate reading control, it has a time reader in the mixer

My FOH friends agree, in that they all hate the TF mixers, and find the DM3 stage interesting.  I looked long and hard at it and decided it was not enough of what I need (inputs, faders, recording, timecode) and a lot of what I don't need (most of the FX etc).  That it has Dante from the get go is very cool.  But it is not any sort of DM7, which is reflected in the price.  Maybe a future firmware upgrade will allow the DM3 to accept more inputs to mix (via Dante), that would be great.

Just to feed my curiosity, why do you want TC on the mixer?

A brief call to Yamaha support answered a few questions mentioned above.  They do not view the DM series as replacements to the CL+QL or even the TF mixers and are still making all those.  The DM3 is a different beast than a DM7, not just in # of inputs--they viewed the TFs as the next step up (in inputs etc) from the DM3.   I asked for clarification on the number of channels to mix on the DM3, and they said that while you can mix and match input sources, 16+2 channels to mix is all you get, period.

    Hi Philip,

This is not my information here

The DM3 are more limited than his big brother the DM7, for example, the DM3 haven't insertion points, and much more limited mixer and inputs. I don't think that the TF is a upgrade, IMMO is a downgrade (horrid OS)

  10. The Cmit mini has the same length of interference tube as the normal Cmit (which also has a short tube), the length of that tube is the only thing that matters from an acoustic point of view, the only thing that changes is that it has electronics, more compact (and modern). Same for the Sennheiser

Another thing is the Sanken CS M1, it has a shorter tube which will act at higher frequencies.

CLs and QLs are much more expensive than DMs, even used.   I don't think it will replace them, but will for sure replace TFs, at least among FOH folks.

I'd be interested to know what is clocking the Dante feed for this mixer when it is using Dante for inputs.  Is it something that is generating TC?  How are you feeding the computer running BR?  Dante?  USB?

IMMO the DM7 is the replacement for CL and QL, the DM3 for TF, for high end the Rivage series. The CL/QL are more expensive and older (This tiny desk will go to 96kHz and have better touch screen than CL or QL), like the PM1D was more expensive than a new PM10.

You can feed the computer or by USB or Dante. Dante in this mixer could be "Preferred leader" or not, the mixer chase the Dante election (Like CL or QL) if you synchronized by Dante. Is only 48kHz and 96kHz of fs.

There is no TC generator, the mixer can only read the DAW TC, but in IMMO, who cares in a mixer? (My Audio Developments mixer does not have TC), I suppose the TC must be in the recorder, the Boom Recorder for example can receive TC on any channel, I suppose you could send that TC by midi or OSC to see it on the mixer display (Such as the DAW controller mode).

The SD Pix970 would be a nice addition to this desk

My complain of this desk is the lack of insertion points (Channel or Bus) or the lack of Dugan automix

  12. I bought one with Dante, it's very small, IMMO is a great companion for Boom Recorder, it has six aux sends plus two matrices, a low latency USB, it can be synced externally with Dante, anyway is a good sounding mixer. The operating system is like a Central Logic, in a few minutes, if you know how to operate a CL and QL, you own this mixer.
It has an external power supply (24V/48W XLR4 input), ideal for battery operation (But is a bit power hungry).

This new DM3 and DM7 line will probably be the replacements for all the low and medium series (TF, QL and CL).

In my opinion Yamaha has hit the nail on the head

    Hi everybody,

I’m thinking about the best antenna for my bag setup:
    - 888
    - AudioWireless DADM226 distribution
    - Wisycom MCR42 and MPR30 Recievers

My dealer sold me 1/2 wave Shure antennas: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1434782-REG/shure_ua8_470_636_wideband_antenna_for_front.html

But I'm not happy with the lenght, as stick out of my bag pretty much. So I'm thinking about 1/4 wave antennas.

The DADM BNC connectors are next so each other so I have to put at least one cable for one antenna to have different positions.

I'd also like to mount at least one of the antennas to my ORCA harness at shoulder height to have a higher position.

I made some experiments comparing my 1/2 wave to 1/4 wave, 1 mounted to the DADM, 1 at the harness. Also compared the Bowties. In this test I had similar reception with all of these antennas, so I tend to use the 1/4 wave due to the smaller size.

But is there anything I'm not thinking of correctly?

I read something, that it's not recommended mounting 1/4 wave whips directly to a BNC cable?

    Thanks!

If you have a proper ground plane, a 1/4 antenna have more gain than a 1/2 dipole

    Hello everyone!

I've been thinking of getting a Zaxcom Deva V, i know they still provide support depending on specific parts but I've been wondering if it's actually worth it. Even with a hdd caddy how does the actual exporting the audio process works? Is it fast enough?
Following another old recorder, the Aaton Cantar X, I was wondering if there is support for it ?(I know Aaton doesn't support it anymore) Is it still possible to get a CF caddy for it or can you use firewire to usb with it?

Sorry for my ignorance, I really need an insight if it worth getting an old machine second hand or a new modern recorder under 1.5k euros.
    Appreciate all comments!

First, no replacement parts for the Cantar X1 or X2 (Specially the LCD)

The Deva V is a superb machine (Every Deva since the IV have the same OS), but IMMO only for cart (too big), is great for narrative work (Easy to mount and unmount tracks and metadata entry), touch screen, 10 tracks, great preamplifiers, Zaxnet orders. The only one drawback is the file names, is just the folder and number (001, 002), but by using the Wave agent is very easy to fix (rename the file with the metadata name)

IMMO the Deva V with a Mix8 or Mix12 is a win win, perfect for today cart work

  15. The last incarnation of my lifeboat bag (Is the spare for my Nova)

Zaxcom RX4 + MRX414, Maxx with CL, IFB200, Hawk Woods NP1 distribuitor , Betso Botwie antennas, Orca OR30. 8 tracks, 4 receivers, IFB thru Zaxnet and UHF

Hello fellow mixers, trust you are well. I had a liquid spill on my mix 12, there is a technician working on it right now but he needs a schematics diagram of the board to be able to test it. Do you have a copy available please? Thank you so much!

Try to clean, the board and the faders, try with Isopropyl alcohol diluted with distilled water (50/50), no power on until all the liquid will be evaporated, for great the fader guide (You need open it), silicon oil

I am wiling to agree with you about the price (though many have expressed that it is properly priced considering the features, functions and build quality) but I cannot agree with you about the size. Have you actually picked one up and tried it yourself? It is quite compact and slim, can easily be put in the front pouch of a bag. I personally would not want it to be any smaller. Comparing it to Oasis doesn't make any sense (particularly if you're concerned about size  --- Oasis is just about a full sized mixing console). Also, I may be wrong on this, but can't Oasis work with Nova?

The Oasis work with the NoVa perfectly (I have both)

I did not mean exactly that the Aria had a large size, it seems small, I meant that people expected a Mix8 II, something like the Sonosax, small size and price. Maybe I explained it wrong.

Probably if they had taken an inexpensive and small surface, I would buy it to carry a very small setup with the NoVa, at that price I am comfortable with the Oasis.

    Best Regards

  18. Nice unit but IMMO is a wrong move.

I venture to say that everyone expected a MIX8 II, small, like the SX-LC8 + from Sonosax and even a price similar to that of Sonosax (1400), something with 8 faders + 8 trims, pfl and basic transport (REC + STOP). But they have produced something very cool but at an exorbitant price, which with the addons is more expensive than an Oasis, and IMMO the Oasis give more.

    I don't understand that move

Zaxcom Nomad 12 vs Zaxcom Deva 5.8 - Which one would you choose & why?

Nomad is tiny (also nice for a cart), have neverclip, have zaxnet, have auto trim, have Oasis possibility, have Touch, individual on/low radios, multiple trims to one fader. Deva have touch screen and a nicier file control. IMMO the Nomad is a much modern machine
