Wilmington North Carolina: Sound recordist/ engineer for master interview
ElanorR replied to JosiahRyan's topic in Workflow
Hey! The one time I dont come here for a few days... I live in Wilmington, NC (currently having a hurricane:) Dis I miss this job? -
This is not exactly the topic from above but since I see that LarryF has been here, I'll go ahead and ask it: Would Lectrosonics Srcs in a PSC rf 6 pack or similar rf multi type situation have similar range to a venue? Is one method of antenna combining (maybe wrong word here) more efficient than the other? Here's my situation: I have a friend soundmixer whom I work with often who gets amazing range from his venue 1 and passive sharkfins. I want to emulate his system and success but I have a PSC 6 pack. Should that work as well if all other parts of the system are equal?

Its not as important now that the payroll compaies have online timecards but new utilities should know about timecard buddy. I stll use it occasionally. Also they should keep a simple mp3 player on their phones for those "just get the utility to do the playback" days.

A simple control surface is an option. Im a little concerned about dependability in a pinch with a more complicated one. One middle of the night when...maybe there was drink and overthinking, I bought an Avid S1 that I cant even keep running in my tiny home studio. That thing is way overkill. That's good real world critique. Thanks!

That sounds good also. Right now Im using the 552 as my mixer as well, but am looking for a few more outs in the next design without losing dc power. Its hard to beat that little 552 for sure. There are many ways to skin this proverbial cat.

Thanks for that, I'll go looking. I have a motu interface that I got because it has AVB and I wanted to add an AVB stagebox someday, but Im not commited.

A question for those of you who do music playback on set: Do you use a mixer or controller in conjuction with your DAW and interface? If so, what one? Ive been looking for the perfect solution for a small playback cart that would have enough busses to feed mains, a potential thumper, and 2 discreet earwig transmitters from DAW and VOG. I would love to find an analog solution that takes dc power and has enough outputs to do that without being giant...but maybe a controller would be sufficient and stable enough. What do you think?

Cody, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one still using a 788t and vr field. Thanks for sharing your power solution.

Hi all, reviving this topic. I'm also building a cart (out of all this slightly older sound gear) where I hope to keep the brains of the cart self contained in a removable Mixercage. I also talked to Ron at PSC and have a PSC triple play in the mixer cage. 2 of the triple play inputs are fed by 2 4-pin full sized xlr outs of a PSC cart power II and one goes to an empty np-7 cup inside the cage for when it leaves the cart. The cart power II has PSC LiFe battery backup. In the Mixercage is SD 788t, PSC 6 pack, Comtek bst 75-216, and Lectro T4 IFB. The eventual BlackMagic monitors, venue and extra comtek will run directly from the 4 pin outs of the cart power II. I took a rough draft of this cart out to work on Friday and it seemed to go ok, although I noticed that the 788, venue, and single Marshall monitor I was using got hot pretty quickly. I'm still working out how to test and calculate Amp draw, so there could be a problem there or it could just be normal for older gear. Still troubleshooting. Anyone have any opinions on what I might be doing right or wrong? It's another issue but I'm also troubleshooting RF. Just ordered a scanner to see what kind if RF spray might be happening in that little box.

Codyman, thanks for this!

I still use a 788T also but I definitely don't have those skills. That's really great!
