  1. Thanks, everyone. The 744T has the firewire DVDRAM attached and that is what I am planning to turn in. Jeff, you're right, it's all about the telecine people having something to reach for if they have problems so that they can get the dailies out. I'm trying to wean them away from this whole "backup" idea, but I gave them the option of using the CF card, which they don't support (because then THEY would have to buy the media to copy to, rather than just stack up the DVDs and DATs that production paid for.) You and I are old enough to be baffled at the whole "backup" concept from Nagra days when one reel of original sound somehow seemed to be adequate. And using the DEVA II for backup is tricky since the firmware in the transfer machines has trouble with the old FAT16 file structure. So when 2nd unit mixers came in with shiny DEVA V's, the telecine would use the DAT for dailies, and keep the DEVA II firmware in the Fostex machines! It's all fun, huh? Anyway, thanks for the input, it will be interesting to see what they decide.
  2. I have been on a show for several years and am finally able to change things a little. (What follows is no April Fool's joke, okay??) I have been using a Deva II and a DAT machine. There. I said it. It is what the telecine people wanted and it has kept me employed for 5 years. But I'm moving on. I'm going to be using a 744T, (since they still want only ONE track the 788T seemed to be overkill for this show.) But I'm retiring the DAT. Done, thanks, and farewell. This will really make all of the 2nd unit mixers happy since they have had to scramble to find one that works. But the telecine dept. still wants some kind of backup for dailies transfer. I think that duplicating a DVD would take too long at the end of the night for the UPM to allow it. I've suggested a rotating bunch of Compact Flash cards, but telecine says they don't do CF cards. So my question is: what do you use for backup, if you indeed use backup? Thanks, And happy April... Beau Baker
  3. Here's what happened week 2, when the new fall shows opened: http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/toldja-jay-leno-slips-into-last-place-against-real-competition-not-just-repeats/
  4. This issue also points to the not-very-much-known thing about the Emmys: you get awarded for AN EPISODE, not A SERIES. So you can slave away doing 24 episodes, and the Emmy can go to the person who mixed the 25th. Hey, he/she mixed it, he/she deserves the award, but it's a little misleading to then attach the series name to the Emmy, implying he/she did the whole thing. What do you think?
  5. Great job! Now let's get together and make that mobisode series I wrote (post strike, of course) called, in response to the WHY WE WRITE, the WGA writer's mobisodes, WHY WE CREW.
  6. On my current show, it's the 300 feet of video coax that keeps me as far from video village as possible, and the party fun fest there. Seriously, I used to think it was the microphone, but with the evermore frantic shooting style going on, the video monitor in front of me lets me know just which Schoeps should be open on which particular take. (Since the shot changes from take to take!) And thanks for this new board! BBB
