  1. A lot is technique, keep your hands in line with your shoulders, therefore the weight is straight down. Every time someone picks up a boom for the first time, they spread thier arms out and reach forward. therefore all out of balance. If you do that it turns any easy shot into a long excruciating test of endurance. technique is the key.... Know the shot and set yourself up for what will be the majority of the scene, so hopefully all those twists and turns where you are overextended or jammed awkwardly in a corner are the extra bits. Its all theory and sometimes its just awkward. And then wait for...."ok, keeps rolling, reset and straight into another one"....
  2. Very good suggestion and very useful in many ways. The way I taught myself both ways or 'cack handed' is to start doing those simple static shots the other way. Slowly your brain adapts and now it makes no difference which way I boom, so I always boom facing camera or whichever is best for the shot.
  3. Hmmm...just read the PR on that shot and it seems like I'm wrong again. One shot.!!
  4. My guess is there would be a cut when they tilted up to the chopper. (But I've been wrong before... ) Nonetheless a very impressive shot.
  5. Here is a pic of mine, its called a Lincoln Chordmaster, made in Italy... One of those junk shop finds, and it does sound funky...
  6. That looks like a keyboard I have, switch it on which starts a fan and the keys open valves...Is that the same?
  7. Reading Jan's comments made me remember that I used to use those simple static shots (such as interviews) to teach my brain how to boom left handed, which is the opposite to my natural side. Now it makes no difference which side i boom from, but at the start it really felt weird. But it was one of the best things I could have taught myself.
  8. I think I just find FireWire connections to be fragile. it only takes once or twice to loose confidence.
  9. I worked on a feature where we used protools for playback. And it seemed like a very fragile system to be using on location. That was a few years ago now, using a Digi 00something FireWire interface and it just wasn't suited to the rough and tumble of location. I don't know how it is with protools now, but if it was me i would be looking for the most robust setup needed to fulfill the job (which may well be protools)
  10. My tongue is only calibrated for alkaline. it gets confused with the ipower rechargeables
  11. That's one if the few testers that put a load on the battery. A good thing for a battery tester.
  12. I use mono send, lectrosonics r1a. I don't think having stereo will be useful. Probably just annoy the director with different sounds coming in each ear.
  13. Just one??? If your lucky there is another under the Christmas tree.
  14. Thanks for the quick reply Matt, but i was asking about flipping to 'run' BTW, the manual is very thin on info.
  15. Did it go back to germany for the fix, or just the local dealer? Mine is in germany atm. Wondering if the mothership does a permanent fix.
  16. Resurrecting this old thread, If i wanted to jam a camera with the slate, do I have to change the switch setting from 'read' to 'run' in order to avoid having the slate jam from the camera code?
  17. And for those who do still use T powered mics, Ambient have a nice header cable that converts 48v phantom to T power. Much more elegant than a phantom to T barrel. http://www.ambient.de/en/products/ambient-recording/mic-power-supply/ptm.html
  18. ok, here's a couple. Keep your batteries warm. They won't last as long in very cold conditions. Get power point adapters for your mains power gear. Chargers etc.
  19. I had a listen to a 8060 the other day, windy exterior with a lot of tree noise. Once I swung that down into position for the interview, I was struck at the off axis rejection. Rather than hearing the coloured off axis I'm used to in a shotgun, the wind in trees just got quieter. Therefore it seemed to be a much clearer sound and did a great job in attenuating the off axis. Although it wasn't a side by side comparison with a long shotgun, I think it did a great job in a situation a long shotgun could be a consideration.
  20. Do you have a photo, it could be a tuchel connector...
  21. I've found the swivel antenna great for tricky hiding in tight costumes. Instead of having the antenna poke out through light fabric requiring it to be taped down to the skin. I've been able to swivel it to a good position so it sits in the costume better. The wardrobe girls loved it, it got a wow from them... which is always a good thing.
  22. ?? I've got to point it at whoever talks
  23. I'm about to start a days work where I'll be swinging an mkh70 all day for exterior dialogue. On this show all outside is mic'd using the 70.
