  1. SMBus protocol is publicly published and uses the I2C serial protocol http://smbus.org/specs/smbus110.pdf so you could probably build one on your own in an afternoon with an Arduino
  2. This is the difference between Timecode and GenLock (Blackburst aka Bi-Level sync for SD or Tri-level sync for HD) Let me give you an analogy of how this works: Lets say you have a musician, Steve the tuba player, listen to a metronome (LTC timecode) for a few beats to get a feel for the tempo of a song. It is a real durdge and the tempo is 24bpm When he starts playing he no longer listens to the metronome and plays at his best guess of what 24bpm is. When he reaches the end of the song he will not have hit the length of the song perfectly, as Steve's internal 24bpm isn't exact. Another musician, Lisa the saxophonist, will play the same song but she will listen to the metronome the entire time as a click track (GenLock). Each beat she will hear a click and know when the next beat is supposed to start. Every time Lisa plays the song with a click track it will be the same length. If her friend Eddy, the French horn player, also plays with a clicktrack (GenLock) their parts will sync up. Sadly, because Steve didn't use a click track (GenLock) his part drifts and doesn't perfectly line up.
  3. I was looking at the air cases but compared to the storm im2500 case it is only 1.12 pounds lighter for $40 more dollars. If I ever need a much larger pelican I'll surely go the air route, for this smaller one I don't think I gain anything for the greater expense
  4. In my larger case (1560) I only have 2 soft dividers for a mic section and a spot for my audio bag. I went with the soft case route and have 3 Ktek KGB Gizmo bags organizing everything else (Grip, Lavs, batteries). I could fit 4 of them in a 1510 sized case, but ideally I'd like to have room for a small light stand and ws2 blimp, and I can't do both. My sound bag will travel separate/on top
  5. I've just secured a cushy gig for the next 3 months that involves a lot of travel with minimal kit for single sit down interviews. So I want to pare down my usual kit into a carryon sized case. I currently have the pelican soft dividers in my larger case but I'm not that impressed. I'm thinking I should either go with trekpak or just with soft cases inside the larger case. What are you guys happy with packing?
  6. Audioroot can currently read all of these SMbus batteries, but they *could* choose to lockout non audioroot batteries but that would be a disastrous play. I trust Rado and Jose that these batteries (all OEMed by Inspired Energy) are 99.9% the same
  7. Woke up to an email this morning from DPA showing off their new MMP-G active preamp. http://www.dpamicrophones.com/accessories/mmp-g-modular-active-cable-microdot?utm_source=DPA+Complete&utm_campaign=a95453c69f-d%3Adicate+launch+_14-6-2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_a141748c6e-a95453c69f-317165797&mc_cid=a95453c69f&mc_eid=5df15c2087 Looks like DPA's version of the Schoeps CMR. I would love to see some tech specs on it and certainly would like to know if it will work with Zaxcom
  8. I agree with all of you guys on the art of Foley, it is a difficult craft to do well. When watching the clip I had a "video game sound" vibe, where sounds synced temporally but didn't sync emotionally. The flip side is that I'm amazed at the creations by computer neural nets. We are now seeing some of the first creative works done by computers. I hope you've all watched the surreal "Sunspring" It is interesting where the future of creative works is going
  9. I have a lightweight bag setup and I use both a harness and a waist belt, depending on the day. If I know I'm running around more and chasing camera I wear the harness, If I'm standing but mostly stationary the belt works best. The harness gets the bag up higher and I can tighten it to my body better. The belt sags a bit and makes running a little more uncomfortable. It could be I don't have it setup right but that's my experience thus far. Overall they are both great and I'm glad I have the options. I love having 3 choices (harness, belt, shoulder strap) for lugging the bag. On longer shoots I'll mix it up between the different rigs to keep comfortable
  10. Inspired energy, a company in Florida, is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of all of this type of battery. Both Audioroot and remote audio purchase a large number of these batteries and with that comes the fancy label.
  11. True, but for the work I do there are a very few number of situations where I'd need to buy 10+ batteries at once
  12. The Remote Audio Hi-Q batteries (OEM Inspired Energy) look to now be available from Trew Audio, and they actually beat the direct Inspired Energy price by a few dollars for the 98wh size. $160 vs. $163. Well done guys. They also have a single bay charger for $117, but details are scarce.
  13. The quarter wavelength of 72mhz is 39 inches, so you'll have a 6.5ft wide dipole
  14. Not Rado, but according to Zaxcom the new TXs are about 2 weeks away (per talking with them at last weekend's Gotham Sound event) 200/235/212 Rx will be able to do 2 channels of ZHD with the caveat of 200 KHz Tx channel spacing. I'm sure the firmware for the new modulation will be released with the new Tx. -- If anyone has more up to date info, please correct
  15. I'm our industry's own worst nightmare. A 13" macbook on my coffee table with a bluetooth speaker that is always a few frames out streaming from Hulu and Netflix
  16. Gotham test on Saturday: Streets had moderate Traffic, Sidewalks had a few people, but nothing like what you'd see in manhattan. Antennas were mounted to the bag on 1 ft dinkum arms. When Jack did his best John Cusack impersonation while we were getting dropouts the signal quality definitely improved.
  17. The audio in is on the usb connector
  18. If the editor is prepared for a LTC audio track, yes. Tentacle makes a 1/8" to usb cable specifically for gopros
  19. Glenn: Based off of this news, will Zaxcom be releasing transmitters/receivers that covers the 470mHz to 560mHz 100 mHz range? As things stand now, Zaxcom's product is unable to tune 1/2 of the frequencies that are useable for sound mixers after this rule comes into play.
  20. http://www.tvtechnology.com/news/0002/fcc-releases-incentive-auction-clearing-target/278576 Looks like we completely lose block 23 and some of 22
  21. I'm also intrigued by the 10 possible switches on the remote input on the trxifb, what can they control?
