Wow I hadn't seen those freq distinctions in a diagram before!  I wish every maker did that.  (Heh, do they already do this now?)  All these years my ears have told me just how much of a giant rear lobe that mic has, in fact to me it's practically an omni at those lower freqs.  Thanks for posting!

  2. Thank you all for your replies!  After getting majorly burned in 2008 using digital wires I just stuck with the Lectro hybrids.  Good to know they work as advertised these days!

  3. Haha!  Nice.  I once had an issue with a guitar amp where everything was working great, but when I installed the chassis into the cabinet, the sound disappeared. I took it in and out and couldn't find any cause. Then I looked at where the chassis screws went and noticed another wire in close proximity to one of the holes. Turns out the screw was grounding a signal wire and I had to reroute the wire and repair the break in its insulation.  Glad it's solved

The camera operator had good instincts because the whole incident is planned and staged ... this is a small clip for a five minute comedy sketch from the 80's.  Can't find the full-length version at the moment, but it's probably somewhere on JW Sound.

I have seen a high res of this that was part of a commercial. I thought that whole thing was just for a commercial?  I agree that it is amazing and I watched it many times when I first saw it. I couldn't believe it was staged either.

  5. That is crazy, never heard that before.  I'm very interested in this, I hope it gets solved.  Did it happen with more than one mic?  It does kind of sound like resistor hiss, but I can't imagine this being that since they recover and sound normal again.  It may have something to do with those resistors?  Are you trying to simply add a dB pad? Maybe remove the resistor and see if it still happens. (Calling John Blankenship!)

The Nova is in use on many Sound Carts and is a very capable 16 track recorder. With multiple choices of control panels and many unique features that are not offered by our competition. For example fully integrated wireless microphone control and internal wireless receivers. Zaxcom is committed to the location sound market and we are always working on new products. For Recording, wireless and IFB.

Does that mean the Deva 24 is permanently out of production?

First of all, contact your state Department of Labor and file a claim.  Secondly, and they'll hate this, is fill out an IRS Form SS-8 (link attached).  Email this to every beverlyboy email address you have and cc everyone on the call sheets you had, especially producer/director.  They WILL NOT want the IRS now making worker determinations as the penalties from Dept. of Labor are huge for non-payment.

    https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-ss-8

File that form with the IRS.    And subsequently file a dispute regarding the 1099 and let bev boy know that too.  Be a complete pain in their ass and encourage all the other crew to do the same.

    Good Luck.

You should also send copies of your unpaid invoice and demand to Roku's legal department claiming copyright for unpaid product and state the you explicity do NOT release any rights to the use of your recordings as no work for hire has been effected due to non payment.   Give them everybody's contact info at bev boy.  That'll be fun.

I love this!  So hardcore.  Thanks for posting and the warning.  They should go to jail.

  8. Once around 2009 or 2010 I spoke to a Lectro rep and he asked me what would I like to see. Immediately I answered recording transmitters. What a bummer Zaxcom has killed that dream.  I was an early adopter of Zaxcom wireless because of this feature, but they just sucked so hard I ended up selling them at a great loss. If only their tech could have lived up to their patents.

  9. Probably not helpful thought here, but when I encounter whispers-with-loud scenes, I just mix the scene quietly so the loud sounds are proper.  I think the real solution is a limiter on the Comtek / IFB outputs.  Then people could jam up their volumes and they wouldn't care about the heavy compression when the loud sounds happen.  (At least they wouldn't care as much as post production would care if the compression was on the source track.) I've thought about trying this with guitar compressor pedals...

  10. Yes!  I have two that are maintained and ready to work.  I love analog and don't care about any digital benefits or remote control controllers.  I love having a standalone analog mixer!  It's so sad to me that all the name brand digital recorders are built to use their own remote controllers that are not compatible with other devices.

The Solices have both had minimal maintenance over the 10+ years I've had them, and it was never expensive.  Compared to a digital mixer I used to love until its processor died and no replacements were available, the Solice is a lifetime piece of gear.  Like tube amps, if you know how to keep them.  I have no idea what I'd do if I lost them.  At this point they are the most prized items of the kit!  I am so happy I invested when I did.

  11. Oh man I totally missed this.  I barely knew him either, but I did speak with him a few times.  Mostly I'm a fan of his awesome and emotional posts that he used to make here.  Somehow, I always remember his stories about dishonest DPs and camera ops, and how he almost got in a fight with the DP in the middle of a highway scene.  That's my kind of guy.  I wish I knew him better, he was clearly a giant.  RIP Mr. Coffee.

Hey Rado I realize this is waaaay OT, but I think those images are misleading because they don't have any distinctions for different frequencies.  We all know that even a super cardioid essentially captures bass freqs the same as an omni.  Also despite the name, there is always a big sweet spot on all omni's I've handled - right in front of the element.  Neither of these issues is evident in those kinds of illustrations.

Apologies for the OT.  I just wish the audio industry was regulated the way other ones are.  For example, forcing all mic manufacturers to publish clinically-tested specs, including the most important spec that no one talks about - off-axis response.  The music industry equipment also needs some standardization.
