  1. With a smaller transmitter like the Zaxcom ZMT you could even rig up two lavs on the setup. That would provide safety and redundancy and you could also rig one at a lower gain level and one at higher gain to catch the full dynamic range of the performance. -Mike
  2. Kudos, Allen! That's cool of you thanks a bunch! -Mike
  3. Very nice! Any chance you would share the 3D printer file? -Mike
  4. I think it’s more that if the wind is really blowing hard, it could possibly find its way into the mic body and to the capsule through the switch.
  5. I used standard xlr cables when I rigged up a car last year. Ran them into the door. The rubber gasket around the door had enough give not to harm the cables. Just tape them down really (really) well on the outside of the car. -Mike
  6. Cool, just wanted to clarify. And I was genuinely curious too because I don’t know anyone who has actually tried the Røde Soundfield yet. Rode does also make some nice microphones for studio recording: their NT5/NT6’s and NTR ribbons in particular are pretty well regarded in the location music world. I’m hopeful that the NT-SF1 is going to be something really cool. -Mike
  7. Have you heard and used the Røde? Or are we just making random assumptions? -Mike
  8. +1 Cinela Leo-25 works great for the MKH40. -Mike
  9. You may have already found this out from reading other threads, but any microphone that’s outside of the vehicle needs to be wrapped in quite a bit of foam. The Rycote overcover by itself will not cut it. When I did a car recently I got some fairly thick foam from a craft store, and zip tied it all around my lavs. The foam will also help protect the microphone from the heat of the engine or exhaust.
  10. I think your system sounds fine, and I would’ve done pretty much exactly the same as you. -Mike
  11. Sound Devices has been very reluctant to make promises about upcoming/planned features in my experience. This doesn’t necessarily mean that phase reverse will not be added in a future firmware update. -Mike
  12. I have done tests with the MixPre where I pulled out the power supply in the middle of recording a file. The file survived just fine. -Mike
  13. Wow nice, thanks for posting! I wasn’t sure that this would ever happen either. Price seems quite reasonable too - $499 early access for LIO8/ULN8 or $599 after early access. -Mike
  14. Interesting! How thick is it? It looks a bit thick in the picture - does it make a noticeable bulge in the shirt? -Mike
  15. I have a separate SD card (a very old 2GB one) that I only use for firmware updates on my MixPres. That way I can leave all of the updates on there and carry the card with me, making it very easy to roll back to an earlier version if something starts to go crazy on set. I would not leave the update file on the same card you use to record on - if you just have the one card I would format it after installing the update. -Mike
  16. *knocks on wood* My gaff tape solution for the Remote Audio cup hasn’t failed yet! -Mike
  17. Personally, I prefer using the USB-C port as the main power source on the MixPre-3 and -6 over any of the aftermarket Hirose options. The reason for that is that when powering from the USB-C port I can still keep AA batteries in their tray attached to the MixPre as a backup power source in case anything fails. With the Hirose adapters you are limited to just that one source of power. I just loop the USB-C cable through the side peg of the MixPre and it’s pretty secure. -Mike
  18. Yes, IMO that’s a pretty standard VO micing technique, useful with all types of condenser microphones. I position my mics above and angled down toward the mouth all the time in the studio, using U87’s mostly. -Mike
  19. The Rycote Invision pop filter is the most transparent one I’ve ever heard. I use it all the time for VO with large diaphragm mics like the U87 or TLM170. They sell it it in a kit with the INV-7 shockmount so you can use this pop filter with your 4018 as well. http://mymic.rycote.com/products/shock-mounts-suspension/invision-studio/invision-inv-7-pop-filter-kit/ -Mike
  20. @Matt Bryant will you please offer @IronFilm a red delicious so we can all go back to talking about microphones? 😃
  21. New firmware (v.2.20) released today that has among other features: Output gain range increased by 20dB. Hopefully that will help with the level issue. I’m picking up my new IFB200 today or tomorrow from Gotham so this firmware comes at a great time! -Mike
  22. Interesting. I guess I’ll have to check it out! -Mike
