  1. I have a Shure MV88 that I carry with me all the time just so I'm prepared if I hear anything worth recording. I like it pretty well - doesn't compare to my main SFX mics (Sennheiser MKH 30/40), but it's fine for down and dirty recording. Its a little bass shy and a little bit noisy for quiet ambiences, but overall pretty good. I use the Shure MOTIV app to record into as that let's you control all the features of the mic. -Mike
  2. If you have access to a Pro Tools system it's very easy to do on there
  3. Nice, I was wondering about price. thanks Jim! I've made a few PVC cases like that too and while they work fine and are very protective, like Jim said they are heavy and bulky and carrying multiple mics takes up a lot of space quickly. They also look like pipe bombs which is sometimes a little startling for people... Anyway i think having the Rycote option for lighter duty where you don't need quite as much shock protection (95% of what I do) will be awesome. -Mike
  4. Just saw this announcement: http://rycote.com/microphone-windshield-shock-mount/mic-protector-case/?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Mic Protector Case Looks pretty awesome. Includes 3 tubes that go inside to separate the mics too. -Mike
  5. Nice! Do you remember the size of the grommet that fits? -Mike
  6. Sadly no, I haven't ever charged extra for this. It's more about providing the best product than any specific client request. If it's a choice between the U87 and a nice wireless set then yes, you will probably get more use out of the wireless. Just wanted to point out that the 87 isn't totally useless on set!
  7. I don't see why this wouldn't work, normal caveats about re-jamming apply of course. -Mike
  8. You will want to hook up both word clock and timecode. Probably best to send to both units from an external sync box since it looks like you will only have one BNC port to work with (which should be used for word clock), and will have to input timecode through the Aux In port. -Mike
  9. I get requests fairly frequently for temp voiceover to be recorded on set. Sure, you could get away with doing this with your production mics, but if you already have a U87 why not put up the sexy VO mic for this? Might make you a hero. I've got one of these little "isolation chambers" that fits over the top of the mic and reduces some of the room noise too: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1346491-REG/auray_iso_armor_2_iso_shield_for_recording.html Just another thought. -Mike
  10. One of the spec sheets I found said that it would have a multi-pin output to access all of the capsules individually. -Mike
  11. Besides having the volume really low on playback, try rolling off as much of the high end as you can get away with on the playback tracks. If most of the bleed is low frequency, then it seems like that would be a little easier to deal with in post. -Mike
  12. Very pretty! How are you powering the MixPre? AA's? -Mike
  13. I tried it and returned it. I love the INV-Lite shockmount, but hated the softie. May have been a problem with the one I got, but the fur on the softie I had was not firmly attached to the foam, so when I attempted to put the mic in it the foam just got all bunched up inside the fur instead of sliding smoothly down the mic. I tried for about 10 min to get it to work and failed, so took it back. I still own the INV-Lite shockmount though and use it all the time; it's great. -Mike
  14. I don't know that I would use the foam in the Rycote basket. Besides being in the way of the lyres, I think I remember reading that it actually degrades performance of the basket as it reduces the amount of dead air in the basket. Just takes an extra second to slip the foam on after you remove the mic from the basket. I have the 4017C and Rycote basket and have had no issues with it the way the green lyres came set up. -Mike
  15. I'd kind of rather have MS to be honest. The problem with XY is that neither mic is truly on axis to where the camera is pointing. Both patterns should sum to mono well enough though. -Mike
  16. Some more speculation here: https://wavreport.com/2018/01/17/first-look-sennheiser-g4-wireless-kit/ (interesting read though) -Mike
  17. The Sanken CMS-10 is apparently "designed for camera mounting" according to the description. -Mike
  18. Hey all, Does anyone have an accountant in the NYC area that they would recommend? I have one that I've used for the past couple of years and haven't been totally satisfied, so I'd love to look around a bit. If anyone has someone that they use and like and who understands our business I would love to hear about it! I am incorporated as an S-corp, if that matters. Thanks! -Mike
  19. You could also get a couple of bathmats. They have memory foam ones that deaden sound pretty well, and one or two of those rolled up will be light and not take up that much space at all
  20. Phase issues will be a huge problem if you do it that way. -Mike
  21. Thats true, however there are other ways to go about it. If you are a mixer who is buying these as your first sync box, then you would have to get all of these cables for the first time anyway, so its not really anything more than you would have to do with any other sync box. If you're picking up these boxes in addition to or to replace other sync boxes, then you likely already have some standard cables. You could do like I did (at the suggestion of someone else on this thread) and simply pick up some BNC female bulkhead to Right angle 1.0/2.3 DIN male RG179 SDI cable jumpers (from Amazon, at $10.99 each https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LYG69P5/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1), which will allow me to use these boxes with all of the cables I already had which are terminated in BNC connectors. So I can still use the BNC terminated cables I already had for Sound Devices, Red, and Arri cameras, and I only spent $44 for the four adapter cables I needed for two Ultrasync One's. All this to say, there are other ways to go here where cables don't have to be such a huge expenditure. -Mike
  22. Is he booking you during normal business hours? Then charge whatever studio rate you normally charge for other types of work. If he's booking you on a more flexible, nights and weekends schedule maybe cut a deal but remember that no matter what this is taking up studio time that could be used for other paying projects and you deserve to be compensated accordingly. -Mike
  23. No this is not possible. On the MixPre-3 you only have 3 inputs available at a time. In order to use the aux inputs, those channels must be assigned to one of the three faders first, replacing the xlr input on that channel. They can be iso'd or sent to the mix from there. The MixPre-6 can record all 6 inputs and the L-R mix simultaneously. -Mike
  24. There's no automatic waveform matching in Pro Tools. If you don't have timecode on the original files, unfortunately the only way to do it is manually. That said, could you use Pluraleyes for this? Not sure if it works on audio only with no video. -Mike
