  1. Does anyone know the guy who wrote this article? http://www.studiodaily.com/2015/04/awesome-sound-tight-budget-part-1/?hq_e=el&hq_m=3067675&hq_l=5&hq_v=b416f8a761
  2. I look forward to seeing you all again! And meeting a few new people!
  3. It is accomplishing this by using a chip, which means it is probably just noise cancelling using the second mike on the phone (iPhones has had a second mike for this purpose for a while; it is used actively on phone calls.) This means that there will be digital aliasing on everything recorded. This might be fine for a Xmas family video, but it certainly will not be professional.
  4. I just sold my 2nd gen ipad because it was painfully slow in iOS 8.
  5. Thanks for positing that Senator. Will definitely record it.
  6. Thanks for the very informative review!
  7. The problem with a 5.1 QT is that I can almost guarantee that no one will ever be able to listen to it. If you do create a 5.1 file, it will normally play the L and R channels out the default output of the computer, which will freak everyone out and make them think you forgot the dialog. Or it may not play audio at all, which is even worse. To correctly play the file, you must have a Mac with a 5.1 output chosen in system prefs. There are only a few ways to accomplish this and even then it relies on external devices being set up properly.

I played with it at NAMM in January. Glad to see they finally released it. It is fun, but built like a toy, very cheaply. The ability to edit the parameters is great.

  10. @Senator, no, not VO, on camera ADR. I forget who told me, but much of the production sound was unusable and he is ADR on a lot of location material.
  11. COSMOS has a ton of ADR. NGT is apparently quite good at it. The timbre of his voice is very inconsistent though because they constantly cut between locations. Considering the show, I will forgive that. It is among the best on television.
  12. Looks like I have it covered now, but thanks for the recommendations everyone.
  13. I am looking for someone to help cut FX on a low budget feature preparing for a temp dub. There is pay. The film is a 75 minute comedy and is fairly easy. The most difficult scene is a brief car chase involving a limo. You may do as little or as much as you wish. First deadline is in about two weeks. PM if you are interested. Thanks,
  14. Unfortunately, Allman has dropped his suit, which looks like production may resume. http://variety.com/2014/film/news/midnight-rider-gregg-allman-agrees-to-drop-lawsuit-against-producers-1201179265/
  15. For dialogue, I usually start with a compression ratio of about 1.5:1 or 2:1. I also like using one compressor on the individual track and another on the bus, both with very low ratios. I think a lot of peple fail with compression because they use a "one size fits all" setting. I am constantly adjusting the threshold to get the correct results. If I think I need to use a higher ratio, usually it is better to move the fader. Clip gain helps somewhat in getting drastically different levels under control, but it does not replace compression.
  16. You might think that this is a professional forum, but I send students here all the time because I don't do production sound and you all have far more experience than I do. There is no such thing a s a stupid question, as long as it is asked with sincerity. The professional response would be to help out someone who has less experience than you, or keep your mouth shut.
  17. There are examples of fair use in documentaries, but the producers need to contact a copyright lawyer in order to know for sure. In addition, whether or not it is fair use, it is likely the copyright holder will file a nuisance suit, and the producers will end up winning the case but losing money defending themselves in court. It's a lot easier to not use the music in the first place.
  18. Allman is suing the production company to prevent the film from being made. http://www.thewrap.com/gregg-alman-midnight-rider-lawsuit
