  1. In my experience specifying cable and connector characteristics is little use without knowing what grade solder was used. J
  2. Tim, thanks, you probably answered the question for me. I guess it's a location (in Papua New Guinea) - I reckoned all the other 'non-translatable' repeated words in the listings were locations but I never thought it for SONA - partly because of it being so close to 'sound' as a word and because I'm very familiar in abbreviations ( I share a lot of FX with fellow French, Swedish and Danish editors for instance). It was never an 'issue' to know the answer for sure but assuming it's a location is good for me until I eventually need to check details with the director (who's an anthropologist). Many thanks and cheers! Jez Adamson
  3. And thanks also for the great detail! And for making my night with a smile! Great stuff! My only Nagra story is convincing Chinese customs that, whilst it was a (functioning and looked after) thing of beauty, it was a transit item and not an import. That was a few days after my mate in Hong Kong couldn't get rid of his washing machine fitter for questioning about the thing of beauty left at the table at the front door. Again, though, Dan - terrific story, cheers! Jez
  4. SONA This might be the most ridiculous translation request ever on a "professional" user group BUT it isn't coming up on bollocks.translate or 'tother obvious tries. I expect it means - or is short for something meaning - SOUND, but I would love to know for sure what a Dutch recordist (several decades ago) labelling (excellent) tracks actually meant by SONA. BTW (sic) there are a few abbreviations in labelling and those there are are obvious. I just want to be sure I'm not mistranslating a bunch of FX / wild tracks. I've done this a lot with French (and know my way around GP for instance) but I'm hoping a Dutch friend here might set my mind at rest why SONA fails to translate easily with online CRAP Cheers! Jez
  5. Hmm, my 302 was also fried when accidentally feeding 48v to it's outputs. And that's a pro machine. J
  6. And / or triple the channel count. Grandpa was also of course the first King of Lilliput back in 1970!
  7. Cheers Dela, interesting stuff. Anyone know if Mindhunter Netflix is any relation to Mindhunters film? Jez
  8. I assumed/assume the DOP was making a joke. Otherwise he's probably come across a blimp equipped with a sound mirror.
  9. Patience Joseph! My mate Dan used one, and he's a relative youngster like myself. They were used extensively early on I believe in the UK paired with a brilliant SQN 3M preamp combo for news and reportage, especially in the difficult (warzone etc) field. Good details probably available on the SQN website. Jez
  10. Cheers for posting this. Danny was a wonderful host when I visited NYC and the Rent set (and thanks to Peter and co for the intro). As a complete sideball, when I clicked to watch it there was also beside it a marvellous Jim Bowen standup routine about Bullseye, a UK tv show from my youth (which I am enjoying more now on repeats). Cannot do a link for some reason but enjoy both !! Jez Adamson
  11. Send me over there, Mike - I'll record his stream! And I've edited Japanese surround production tracks before ... maybe it's normal? (Chose best mono channel of the five if you're wondering). J Eric - now that's just inspired producing!
  12. Yep I looked, ran out and bought a lottery ticket - but didn't win!
  13. Ha - ten minutes later - I guess I'm with Phil on this one - pretty much just rehearsed and well recorded. There's certainly to my ears/eyes what we call "Spots" and what the Yanks refer to as "Jack Foleys" in the file rummaging. That door too. The interior van is not sync. What is impressive is the very smooth transition in voice quality whilst keeping some localising difference yet not breaking the flow, especially for the "Looping" My favourite part has to be the end walk away though.
  14. Firstly, I admit I haven't watched the entire clip but was happy to post - and am happy to continue to do so until an older Brittan than myself chirps in with real knowledge! re the adr - or sync- I thought maybe that was just stretching out the audio from beyond the take to make it match in style/timbre Phil's first comment - what we all strive for (and perhaps started out expecting) Maybe I got it wrong with the telephone? I expected that was part of a joke then we'd see a "mobile"? OK I will watch the rest - but I grew up with this (along with The Adventure Game and The Great Egg Race to name but two) so this was normal 70s quality for me! J
  15. One creative possibility for the time - Sony ECM 50 constructed into the mock telephone mouthpiece feeding a Nagra SNN? And no doubt a 415 or 815 alongside. But I really have no idea. Although 'reportage' it is certainly constructed as a short drama and I see no conflict of interest in coming up with a 'drama solution' if indeed that's what they've done? Quite possibly though just nicely choreographed booms and plants? Jez
  16. Can't deny its beauty! Probably less use than a DR60 granted! Sorry! I'd love it - looks in lovely nick ... Jez
  17. Ha! Lucky he got a credit! I've had an apology from a director for not getting a credit when I had nothing to do with the production of their film besides dipping into my address book for some contacts (nice, obviously) - and then missed serious credits when not available to make the necessary phone calls to fight for them. Crazy ... and ugly. But the former gave me some insight into the latter - the fight for credits can be a shocking fight, and an unpleasant experience for the above line folk who probably don't realise we're losing out when friends are given unnecessary credits. I'm a bit of an advocate of a return to the old studio system of eg SOUND - The Old Dept Head Git In Charge Of Recording Editing and Rerecording ... although I'm damn proud of even my minor credits, especially the early ones, and I'll never (or rarely) be even a sub-department head! Look back a few weeks or months for Jeff's story of thinking he'd missed a credit then finding otherwise. Heartwarming. Jez
  18. In that case I guess you are doing post sound (or at least a friend whom you know and will understand the post job). If you had a sound recordist in mind I would just discuss the project with them, bearing in mind - - pay (what's available - what they'll need to take the job) - equipment needs (you may have to go over the script and discuss this) - cost of equipment needs (maybe there's some negotiation, maybe you need to factor extra hire costs for items, maybe you can or need to jiggle the script or schedule to achieve stuff on budget) Apart from that, you are an insider, so "one of us" (or rather, 'one of them' since I am 'one of you or us' ...) so it is understood that we want to do good stuff, we want to work with nice folk and we all understand we're doing it for a living. With that in mind, for insider jobs, I'm actually all in favour of the elusive points/next job/favour/cooperative (pinko) idea when everyone is in agreement - especially when cash could be there for those that need it most at the time - folks' circumstances change all the time when freelance not studio. Best of luck - I'd be surprised if you didn't have interested parties for a short shoot run by a sound post pro. Jez
  19. Simon, cheers, good to know. Ron Mac, interesting looking shoulder holster. I have a couple of the discontinued Zeppelin belt holsters for 416/816 which was made by Canford Audio as part of their belt harness system (hey in perhaps the 80s - maybe 90s). Never sure why they stopped - like soft drink chemists, I never take both of them away with me on a job, since I'm certain - as a flat cap wearer - I'm sure to lose one of them eventually. Rycote of all people might well be interested in resurrecting the idea? But I like the option of a shoulder sling. For my occasional 805 use I rigged the Canford holster to a Kata 3N1 20 which works perfectly. Jez
  20. Hi Phil, yep I guessed it was just a misconception immortalised in print - possibly an enthusiastic European talking cm/s to a (then) hopeful Brit hearing ips .... just some of me was hoping there might have been a new holy grail to chase - the handful of stereo 30ips prototypes doing the trade shows in 1970. Of course, like all my rarebit dreams, it never happened. I'm sure there probably WERE portable stereo (multichannel) 30ips machines around in the Nagra / Stellavox years, but they were portable in the 1940s (Alan Lomax) sense - not the sub-Nagra footprint I was lusting after. No Valentine for John Keays ... J
  21. Thanks for the great read Joseph, and for re-posting the Prototype pictures! For me the most interesting bit of info wasn't Nagra at all, but that the Stellavox SP7 had four speeds up to 30ips - any SP7 owners: is this true or did John Borwick just make a mistake?? Jez
  22. Nice one Mirror! But what makes you think she was dead? In space no one can hear her scream, nor her banging on the trunk ... but if they could, hey I've developed this great new Space Speaker system to drown her out with a loop of Space Oddity!
  23. The carrier bag, Jim? Probably a touch more "Silent" - ha ha! Jez
  24. Yep, I've kept hold of as many of my original Rycote boxes as I could and in one, the AC, I cut a hole for the handle (which an extra internal bit of card can cover if I want to). Whilst I also experimented around having wide tubes for carrying windshields around, at the end of the day the cardboard box it came in does a fine job of protecting it in a bag. My WS2s and my WS4 I carry around in a Hofbauer plastic case - one of the cheap ones which unfortunately were replaced - which just happened to be perfect for the job (I've written about this elsewhere with more details a few months ago if anyone needed more info). Jez Oh and PS - re the new Rycote cylindrical bags the tubes are held in - I wouldn't mind using one as a belt holster for say a single MKH40 with Baseball (with some internal foam part way up then a space at the top to include the extra width) ... assuming the bag is wide enough for the Baseball. Simon?
