Just curious, because I am new to the video world, but I keep getting more and more calls, so it's worth asking.
Is it common practice to deliver your files before you are paid?
I come from a music background, and though it's been a long time since I worked in studio, it was generally understood that masters were not released until everything was paid in full.
Though I ventured off into recording live music about a decade ago, I have often adhered to this policy, especially with a new client. I do make exceptions: for clients I know well and have a good working relationship with; when it's a small money gig; or if some agreement is made in advance.
I've been burned a few times, so it's for a good reason, especially when there's more than a grand on the line.
Recently had a film producer (new client) balk when I told him/her that I generally don't release masters until paid. Admittedly, I should have made this clear before the gig, so I relented in this case.
But I am wondering if this is an unheard of policy in the video world, and if perhaps I need to modify my terms.
Thanks.
