  1. i have tried all sorts of things. do you have both an IFB100 and a QRX100 with ifb? can you switch IFB off in QRX? Separate power supply to IFB 100 is the most elegant solution. i too have a meon and found i could not power the 2.4GHZ RF amp off the meon so we ran power from RF amp which is on my antennae tree down to the sound cart and plug it into a 12v wall wort and into mains, maybe i can take a photo and show, this after months of tracing these issues and finding solutions. it works like a charm now. tony
  2. i have had that problem best to power IFB100 off separate source like an Np then its completely clean tony
  3. Yes Senator agreed it would be nice for Red to acknowledge this issue but I have had years of frustration with Red right from the first build of the Epic, your heart sinks when you find out the movie you are about to start is shooting on Red, I had thought we had moved on from their problems, clearly not. Howy thanks so much for explaining the problem I wish there was a workaround other than jamming with my denecke slate or using lockits which I don't own. I would rather leave a devise like the ERX on the cam full time receiving code from me rather than a jam where the Red takes over. I will see where we are at after the sync test comes back and once again thanks to Howy and Fury for the front line knowledge. Isn't this site a great resource what would we do without it. Tony
  4. I have just tested our 2 red dragons with the new ERX v1.31 and the dragon will not acknowledge the code at 23.98. Mmm that's a bit boring, I can get it to accept the denecke ts3 code but after a few hours of not re jamming the dragon reverted to its internal code. Despite the known Red timecode reader problem I need to know where zax is at with this as my intention is to run with the ERXs as I am a zax guy and that is what I am geared around. Anyone know if there is an advancement on this issue. Tony
  5. Hi Fury I am glad to read this post at this time. I am about to start a movie with 2x Red Dragons and an all zax system and need to sync with my ERXTCD. The reds are coming from North America to us in New Zealand this coming Monday. Do you know if this Red timecode reader problem is fixable with software or is it a hardware problem. Would appreciate any more info you have and a contact at Red who I could deal with directly. Thanks again for getting to the bottom of this. Tony Johnson
  6. Thanks Senator it was an honour to be invited in plus the added bonus of watching endless DVDs at Xmas. Regards Tony
  7. I don't see how up scaling could be as good as higher sampling for the original. A lot of post sound people record all of the effects at 96 these days I wonder if the music is being recorded at 96 too. Of course we have capabilities to record production sound at 96 but mirroring takes a long time plus in some recorders it reduces the track count available. Tony
  8. Yes it did especially as it went through manipulation, pitch change etc. What I am hearing from post is that when noise reduction notch filtering or RX is applied to dial, which in the case of The hobbit was often as there was a lot of unwanted Bg noise on set, then they can hear the artifacts applied when the dial is recorded at 48khz. The more processes the dial has to go through then the less 48 holds up. Tony
  9. - Higher sample rates yield better results during manipulation. Elastic audio, noise reduction and other tasks performed by post every day yield fewer artifacts when recorded at 192/24. Post will often upsample before manipulation. This above quote taken from Brian Liston post on "What specs really matter" an interesting read and makes the point re artifacts heard when sound recorded at 48/24 is manipulated in post which nowadays is a common occurrence. On the hobbit we recorded at 96/24 for dial that was going to be manipulated after, ie Smaug/ necromancer and a few others. Does anyone else record at 96khz or higher on a regular basis on films?? Will it become the norm soon. Tony
  10. I have used the Pro 750s and now currently use the HIFI 680s. I really rate the Ultrasones for film sound. The lack of listening fatigue has been widely talked about and I agree but the main thing I like is the fact the perspective and staging of the sound feels more natural to me and helps assess where the noise floor and extraneous sits in the sound stage. That been said they are NOT robust and I chew through the ear pads and that becomes annoying. My 2 cents worth. Tony
  11. Thanks Jeff, very surprised to see we got through in such a huge year for great sound mixes. Congrats to all other nominees it looks like Chris Munro has better odds than some of us. Tony
  12. Indeed Marc. In the end we decided it had to be the timecode in the Epic. We were generating the master code from an Evertz timecode generator but of course the cam code would take over after the initial stamp on the first frame. this is where my very un scientific theory is and also accepting I am no technical genius, not even close - but because the cam is at twice speed is there a chance the timecode stamp falls at a different place on initial start up? I don't know, or is it just that Red timecode is unstable. I have not worked with the Epic on a Film at 23.976 so have nothing to compare to. Tony
  13. It makes perfect sense for Zaxcom to have a Nomad with the zaxnet and built in IFB and the Maxx as the other option with UHF digital audio to a QRX on a cam, two different options, perfect, make your choice. IMHO the IFB 100 is a better option for bag work, the 100mw output is significant in getting audio around the set from a bag if you don't want to run a RF amp, so for me a Maxx with an IFB100 is a great piece of kit. I don't see the sense in making the Maxx like the nomad when a point of difference is important to define what you need. tony
  14. Hey Zack when buying the NP LS7 do I need to know how long the supplier has had them on the shelf? When does the lithium start deteriorating, once manufactured or after first use? I appreciate your feedback re NP batts. Regards Tony Ps I too would like a half size batt. I think since machines like Nomad and Maxx have come to the market with no battery slot a smaller NP would be great.
  15. Great thanks guys I will look at those options. Tony
  16. Thanks Phil, Unfortunately or fortunately depending how you look at it I have IDX batts and chargers and they are not?? Compatible with other NP chargers so I need to stick with IDX. Also have IDX V locks but because I have the NP slot in my Fusion I was hoping they would still be making them for a while yet. Tony
  17. Hi All forgive me if this topic has been covered already but what is the feeling about the longevity of NP style batteries. Mine need replacing for my fusion but I get the impression Down Under that they are a thing of the past now. That would be a pity as I have a couple of NP boots for powering wireless and IFB and I use them in my Fusion. Just want to check before investing in this technology again. Cheers Tony Johnson
  18. I have the same issue and have to power my L-com amp from AC source as when it was powered off my Meon with everything else I get a ground loop noise through the system like you are describing. Would like to know why as it would be easier to power off DC power. I also got rid of the high freq squeal sometimes from the IFB100 by powering that off its own NP batt. Tony
  19. We have been having the same timecode issues with the Epics with the earlier firmware for two years now so I am actually relieved that someone else is experiencing the same. We have long suspected that its the Red timecode at fault. Tony
  20. From what I gather is that DPs like the Sony F65 and 55 because it has a mechanical shutter option which too makes a horrible noise, different from the fan noise but worse in some ways. So not only have Sony designed a noisy camera with the RAW xfer card but they have a feature which also compromises sound in the shutter. Tony
  21. Hey Jack is the zax net transceiver the same power and range as the IFB100 or the QRX100. I am finding I have have good performance with the IFB on bag rig jobs but the QRX is limited in that area. This looks great. Regards Tony
  22. I too was disappointed to find no backlight on my rx900's . A few years ago I bought an rx4900 and 2 rx900's for my cart(before release of qrx100) The website said they had back lights and when I discovered they did not Zaxcom said that they had switched to another display that did not have backlight. I think this is a biggie as the units are hopeless without the backlight function and to me it's a key function whether on a cart or in a bag. Anyway I know this is somewhat highjacking the thread but I would love to see Zaxcom utilise an app for tablets. this would allow our older and visually impaired to see the functions better. I don't know about you folks but I find it almost impossible to see the detail on those displays whether Zaxcom or lectro. The other day I worked with the Sony F65 camera that had such an app. All the menu functions big and bright on an iPad even the on off. So Zaxcom come on please bring it on. Tony
