  1. I have just started a job here in New Zealand with many Red Epics and have had several weeks in prep with them . We have just last week had audio implemented .It is mic level via either one of the two mic inputs on the front of the camera . I feed these with my IFB100 / erxtcd . The sound is only scratch track but actually not bad for a scratch track especially using the erx as you can vary and set the gain . The lowest speed the cam fans run at is 25% . This is recommended form Red as other wise they overheat and shut down . This is not an ideal situation as on whispered dial the fans can be heard , we have 2 going as it is a 3D project which makes it worse . I don't think this can be called a sound camera in its present build but Red say they can improve the cooling and bring the Fan speed down . One thing to be aware of . In the menu make sure the fans are not on an auto setting where the cam tries to maintain a temperature as the fans surge in speed all the time . Set to 25% and then it will stay at that speed unless it overheats . There is talk of the sound module with AES in etc but don't hold your breath . There are many other features and problems with the camera that needs to be sorted first . Regards Tony
  2. I noticed on mine that the audio delay is only on the erxtc and not the plain erx . This is weird as I would use the erx for director/script on an HD shoot and I cannot implement any delay , I would save the erxtc for slates and cams where they need the tc function . Is this the case? or is it in a software upgrade , or can it be implemented in an upgrade . But apart from that this system is brilliant , that is apart from the Pesky 1k noise , on whip aerial only though . Regards Tony Johnson
  3. Hi , Does anyone know where I could get pouches for my erx ifb receivers . I know a generic one would fit but was hoping that there is a purpose made one out there . cheers Tony Johnson
  4. I have found the same thing . The guy who wires mine used a thicker lead from the lemo to bare ends about 2 inches out of the plug then bonded the cos 11 to that . The cos 11cable is too thin for the connector and risks being pulled out too easy . I will try the standard cos 11 again and see where the levels are at . thanks for the info Tony
  5. Thanks for that Rich . I am wondering if my trxs are tweaked a little as I remember them being "Optimised" for Cos11d before they left the factory . Normal speech levels on mine at 12 - 16db would be too hot , but i am happy to go with the attenuated ones as they sound great . Good to know about the lower voltage DPA . I know the 4063s work with the zax but prefer the 4071 style . Thanks for the info TJ
  6. Oh I forgot to add . Has anyone had success with the DPA 4071 or 4088 with the TRX900 . I had one of my older ones wired for zax and it is very noisy and unusable . Glen said I may be able to change a resister in the TRX to make it work but before that I was wondering if anyone has had success with DPA COS11 and B6s all working with the TRXs . Tony
  7. Hi , I am experimenting with the regular cos11d and the red mark cos11d for my trx900LT . What do other mixers use most ? I have found the regular cos11d to be a little on the hot side and have the trx backed off to about 8db on the level indicator . The red mark seems to me to be a better match even for normal to low level dial . I have yet to try the B6s . What seems to be the consensus on these ? the regular ones or the attenuated B6s . Regards Tony Johnson
  8. I have had a similar problem with mine . It turned out to be the circuit board directly on the back of the screen being to tight and putting pressure on the screen from behind . I fixed mine with help from a zax tech on the phone talking me through it . Basically i just loosened the screws on the board , after taking the cover off of course , and that relieved the pressure . This lasted until the end of the job and then I sent it back for repair . I am noticing occasionally that its doing it again . Its kind of freaky as when the screen goes your kinda screwed . Good luck Tony
  9. Thanks Jeff , I am just unsure as to how you assign a fader to then talk to the IFB100 to send the message to the TRX . It will become clear I am sure . Tony
  10. Hi Jeff , can you please run me through your setup with controlling the trx gain on your deva through the IFB100 . I understand you do not have a mix 12 and the system I am about to get leaves me in a similar position of wanting zaxnet but controlling gain through my fusion as I retain my sax mixer . Regards Tony
  11. definately the Cambridge soundworks system 12 . I use one in a 240v country with a 110 to 240 power supply , worth the extra little bit of hassle as I think nothing compares . tony
  12. Thanks Jeff , I will too have a play this week and look at it again . I don't think there is anything wrong as such maybe just my perception of it . It all came about when I recorded a whispered dial scene , the mike was very close to the actors and I had everything up on the fusion and felt i needed more and knew from being in this situation many times that if I was going through my sonosax i would have around 20db more gain to play with , not that you would use all of it as it would bring up excessive noise but I could use some of it . Actually after re reading Paul Graffs post maybe there is something wrong as I used my lectro 411a set to +5db , line level into my fusion , the smd xmitter set to 32 with a dpa 4061 attached and could not get enough level too . Back to the drawing board or I could read the instruction manual , such an un male thing to do . Cheers Tony
  13. ooopps sorry I got the quote versus reply all arse about face . tony
  14. At risk of seeming too basic, I'll remind everyone that the input trim should be high enough to keep the prefader level just below full-scale at the loudest point, allowing a reasonable amount of headroom for surprise peaks. Because headroom is allowed for the peaks, it requires running the fader higher than unity (past the 0 on the fader scale) much of the time to record lower signals at full scale. All this means that you should not be at all shy about operating the Deva rotary faders between 2 o'clock and full up, with the trim properly set. Glen Trew
  15. I too have no problems when the cmit is plugged into my sonosax mixer , its just the fusion . I have the trim all the way up on the mic input and the fader often all the way up . Is there any extra trim i don't know about . Is the available mic gain the same for fusion as the deva . Its just on some low level dial I wish I had another 5 - 10db . I am using the blue cmit . tony johnson
  16. One thing I find and hope someone can chime in here is that i struggle to get enough gain when using my cmit into my fusion . The trim is flat out and so is the fader on some scenes . The sensitivity of the cmit is a lot less than the 50 or 60 . Has anyone else found this? The reach of the cmit is better and when I ABd them years ago I liked the way the cmit articulated the dialogue . I found it easier to understand . I think that maybe to do with the off axis rejection of sound . Tony Johnson
  17. I use this combination all the time and find it great . Your other choice would be an MKH60 , which I also have but I find the Cmit5u to be far superior to the 60 . I have never been one for having matching mics although in a perfect sound stage with the mics close together you may hear a different bg noise as you mix from one to the other . But in saying that you can get that with matching mics too depending on what they are pointing at . Tony Johnson
  18. Congratulations Jeff on your impending Career Achievement Award . That is a real honor , you should be very proud . Regards Tony Johnson
  19. Sorry Phillip I meant timecode in general and not specific to that produced by the ERX . I think the ERX has benefits though in size and weight and that it produces both audio and or TC . Tony Johnson
  20. This is all very interesting . I am in the throws of purchasing this system of IFB100/ERX1TC for this use so thank you Billy for testing it and ironing out the bugs . I see it being useful for the Canon DSLR camera scenarios that seem to be very popular now as I believe the timecode from the ERXTC is not affected by the auto gain function on the cameras . Also it is way smaller and lighter than the Denecke and Lockit boxes plus is also a very good audio IFB . I had the chance to audition one down this way a while ago , but audio only . Interesting point about gen lock though as it is often a requirement to have the phase of the cameras locked as well and I don't think there is a way around that with the ERX's . I agree with the rental of these units being separate and will be an even bigger issue when the QRX100 becomes popular as it has the ability of digital audio to the cameras as well as timecode but will be a very expensive system especially on multi cam productions to own by us . 21. I used the DV824 for 2 years on my cart as my primary recorder on 3 Feature Films . The positives : Fast and reasonably powerful processor and when combined with a keyboard was quick and easy to use , the big display and readouts were great in any light . The file entry /metadata entry (imho) is still the best on the market (i run a fusion now) . I like the way the scene/take name is the file name rather than a segment number . Also you can record to dual drives and re edit the data without having to re mirror . I used lockits and had ext timecode as my reference without any problems . That whole side of things and the menu in general are very good . You can also link it to another 824 or 606 and still have only one metadata entry for both machines . negatives : I had to replace the disk drive within that 2 year period and the technician was surprised at how much dust and dirt was inside despite the fact that i was not in any situation where that was worse than normal . I opened my Fusion the other day to do a running repair and after 170 shooting days was as clean as a whistle . I do not think the fan is noisy at all and was never a problem but was wondering if that was where the dust was getting in . I thought the battery consumption was ok and less than a PD6/ex12 . I ran it off a 25a/hr lead acid battery which lasted about 12 hours . Because it does not have a memory battery every time i changed power sources i had to reset the timecode , not a big job but a little annoying . If you are doing any tracking vehicle work or it is getting bumped around then you have to record to hardrive only and mirror later as the disk drive does not handle the movement . All in all i found it a good machine for the money . Tony Johnson
  22. Thanks Glen and Billy , Glen , does Zaxcom make a yagi or batwing type of aerial for the 900 receiver , or do in fact you need them ? I cannot find one on the website . Also i see that you can order a 100mw trx990 by request , apart from the obvious battery life reducing would this be a good idea ? Tony
  23. Thanks Glen , I can source a 992 from our , not so local , supplier in Australia . I think it best to demo the system i intend to buy . thanks for the information Tony
  24. This is great thanks guys . The question then . Would the trx700 be a better option with my existing and comprehensive lectro ifb (which works very well) and then i could look at the zaxnet to control input gain etc , or to go for the 992 . I am concerned at the varying reports of the ifb range . I know there is an antenna amp option but don't want to start lugging heavy lead acid batteries around after getting rid of all that when i bought the Fusion . Tony Johnson
  25. Hi , Firstly thanks to David Waelder for the review of this system in the 695 quarterly . I have been looking at this system for a while now with the view of buying one , however at present i run a lectro sm/denecke ps-1 and i was surprised to read that the lectro system that David compared with the zax system seemed to be as good . Surprised only because everything i had read lent towards the zax being the best . Anyway , because i run a fusion the zax system has advantages but i am concerned about the ifb . Is the 1 watt antenna amp a zax product or aftermarket , what is it? , how much? and how much power does it draw . Also is the trx700 the same audio quality as the trx990 , and is the range as good ? I am wondering if it is better to go for that and use my existing lectro ifb as it works very well . I would appreciate any thoughts from People that have used the system , i know I have harassed Billy Sarokin on this before but that was the older version of the system . I do find that there seems to be varying reports on the range especially the effectiveness of the IFB . regards Tony Johnson CAS
