    Really Glen!!! does this happen? I for one, and speaking here from a Sound Mixer POV and not a reseller POV, like the roll out and the updates that give a taste of what the machine will be like. We have been in a world of constant evolution for a while now with the tools we use so i think we all expect the process to be like this with the Deva 24. Certainly for Zax users the idea of waiting a few extra weeks is unlikely to result in a change to a Cantar or Sound Devices. From memory I thought that what was gleaned out of the Deva 32 launch was that the feedback was that mixers wanted a standalone recorder hence the delay and rethink, better i guess than releasing something that people don't want. I look forward to reading more on the machines progress, seeing a video of it with a GUI and seeing how it can work in my setup. Exciting times. Tony

    Hi Jack Does it interface well with a GUI? as in, better than the Nomad?? can it work with an iPad IOS?? Is the touch screen smaller than the Fusion? is it easy to use with fingers? and read easily. Thanks Tony

  5. small zaxcom bag/cart

    Here is my work in progress for my 2nd cart for breakaway filming or small jobs. I subscribe to the 2 cart option for Feature Films where my studio or large cart stays intact and i have this cart for quick and small breakaway shooting. The main criteria that its cable free. If i want to see the action I move the cart closer not attach a monitor. I kept it small and bare bones so it doesn't end up the same size as my main cart. The camera bag on the back is for TRX900's 742 and radio mic mounting stuff The bag at the bottom contains all batteries with V Locks through a 12v Audio Root regulator to power the Rf amp and Audio Root batts for the rest of the cart. The middle shelf is designed to take a Mix 8 or Oasis. The Oasis would be overkill IMO and I would dearly love Glen to make a V small control surface so i could mount it next to my Nomad Touch and slip it in the bag if I just use the bag. I think 8 channel would be adequate and not too big. This was my first time with the Touch and it was fast and easy to use and streamlined the set up process. While I watched DIT and Vid Villiage run cables through gutters and have arduous relocates we were mobile and fast but could still record complex mixes and output to whoever needed with full wireless sends and re sends to Video and IFB. The other thing I did was kept all powering except the Zaxnet amp in the bag so i could breakaway even smaller with just the bag if needed. The main weakness of this set up for me is that the L-Com RF amp is too thirsty and I would use 3 IDX 98wh batts a day and thats with powering it down between setups. Any opinions on other options would be greatly appreciated. I love the Audio Root power distro and batteries, it is such a advancement on other BDS systems out there. Its nice to see such accurate detail of powering. Finally - This was the Hong Kong part of a recent movie where we were shooting on narrow streets and alleyways with hundreds of people and I wanted to prove I could deliver complex setups without my main cart. It was very refreshing to be paired down but with Nomad Touch and all the zaxnet capabilities I was never compromised for control and flexibility, well,,,, apart from maybe that slim and petite control surface.     Do you have any idea how power hungry? do you run off battery? can it run off a dc source higher than 12v without getting too hot? Thanks Tony
  7. Thats interesting Trombles and something to look out for. My research down under says, AirNZ allow unlimited Li batts under 100WH as cabin baggage as do Singapore Air but Malaysia Air only allow two. All these airlines ban any Li in cargo, I agree re having a back up at the destination like a lead acid battery or the like. It makes sense to have them in the cabin so there is a chance if there is a fire, not so in the hold. Tony

  9. Yes thats what i think. It means we can have the power distro the charger and box and we plug our own batts in. I believe they maybe the Inspired Energy/Audio root 98WH batts that are very common. Maybe 4 batts in the neon life.
  10. Totally agree to both of these points. I want to replace my Meon 2 Nimh to a Life because of the weight. I am conscious of having a kit that is light and manoeuvrable easy which means Li-ion whether its a bag or cart. Appealing to Airlines to have a universal policy whilst acknowledging that not all Li-ion batts are dangerous I imagine is a step too far? Thanks Robert I will investigate Packair. I have also had success with shipping equip with the battery plus one spare but with Fedex declaring NO Li-ion anywhere and UPS I believe as well is a concern if it transfers to other Airlines. Not sure it will work for Meon Life on its own. Tony
  11. This issue of freighting and hand carrying Li-ion batts has now reached the very inconvenient stage. Fedex has a total ban and other freight companies either have or are heading down the same path. Just tried to import a Meon Life from the US to NZ, impossible except by sea which is not an option. I then need to get a cart powered by Li-ion to Asia for a job, maybe impossible too with so many different airline policies. Can Remote Audio modify their Meon Life so that you can take the batts out and hand carry them, they would need to be under 100WH which i am sure they are. This wouldn't help with the freight but could mean that we could use our own batts in a remote case with charger and power distro made for it. Or do they go back to Nimh. Just thinking here that its time to re evaluate cart power away from Li-ion. I know if one doesn't travel there is not a problem but if we cannot jump on a plane with our gear to go and do a job then we are a bit screwed. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of Sound Mixers having trouble here. Going back to lead acid is a backward step and a bit hopeless to power the Bag. I would love to hear from Glen Trew as I am sure he is aware of this problem now and would love to hear if there is a solution for this. Samsung and the like have given Li-ion a bad rep along with many other dodgy companies cramming batteries into devices that then short and catch fire. Tony
  12. Zaxcom ZHD vs XR Modulation update

    When you say behaves different with reflections do you mean zhd is better with reflections? To be honest when i have switched to XR from Us mono i see better range on the meters and it does, at times, improve but usually the drop outs still occur. Maybe its something else it just doesn't seem the cure i was hoping for. Rado tell me about your antenna setup, any secrets? I use zax shark fins with a max length of 8 mtres 50ohm beldon low loss cable into Plexir. As stated earlier i believe the plexir gives me better range over straight out of a qrx200.

    Sure I was just wanting to know if you can have successful blending of the old TRX with its requirement for larger channel separation with ZHD working in the same 35mghz and whether anyone has used the ZHD96 and experienced a significant increase in range. Personaly i have found negligible difference between US mono and XR so Rado i think you have tried the ZHD modulation. As you can imagine if you have several different modulations across different eras of zax it can get tricky if you want to chop and change tx with rx you will need to reboot etc and some won't work with others. Just trying to get the most out of having 8 yrs of zax wireless working together. Tony
  14. Zaxcom ZHD vs XR Modulation update

    Hi Glenn, I have a combination of Block 20 4900 QRx100 rx 900 and TRX900 with mic plexir 1. I also have QRx200 x 1 and 742.5 and 743.5. I am about to add ZMT x 2. If I use ZHD 96 can i still use my qrx 200 in dual mode and will the plexir work with that setup in conjunction with running my block 20 TRxs all at the same time. Provided they are all within the 35mghz? I have a job in Asia coming up and in my experience there the RF varies a lot within a small space in the big cities. So i may need to use ZHD and utilise the reflections when amongst buildings but only can do that for the ZMT and 743 whilst running the rest in US mono. Its a bit confusing for me when mixing ZHD with US mono or should it be. Is that the way to go? Another option i have thought about is to get the ZMT and extra qrx200 in the 3.6 band and have options either end of the spectrum but that means maybe an extra plexir and extra shark fins, getting really complicated now. Personally I have found better range when i run my qrx200 with other receivers through the plexir than if it was just a qrx200 on its own. Is this what you would expect? I am new to the ZHD experience. Anyone with experience mixing the various transmissions i would like to hear from. Also does the ZHD 96 make a BIG difference to range. ZHD 48 is not an option due to latency. Many thanks Tony

  16. cart power opinions

    Hi its time to upgrade my old Meon Mk2. I have a choice between the Meon Life or the PSC Powerstar Life. I know the PSC is a few hundred more but claims to offer more in faster charge and hand selected cells. Has anyone tried both or have an opinion either way? I would like to hear before committing. I dont have the opportunity to see either of these in the flesh before purchasing but am familiar with the Meon. Cheers Tony

    Thanks Constantin thats a good idea. I have a bunch of Audio Root li-ion e smart batts so i could use those to give me extra. I thought the Meon 40ah was only as an extra battery. Agree re rack mount but i only have a 1U space avail for cart power. I also like the Audio Root small cart distro but with no charger built in it seems a bit limiting. I like the meon but also like the remote that comes with the PSC as it also has 4 x usb charge. Tony

    Yes agree here the SSM is a great piece of kit and having this size is a huge bonus and necessary as an option with certain costumes. Also i love the LT LR series for backwards compatibility and wide band. I use this al the time as an alt IFB or with my Digital Hybrid series. The size of the receiver and build quality is stunning.     Hi Martin its more about logistics and the speed you have to work at. Also you need to consider how flexible you need to be as laying a cable to a preferred place for the boom op might not work as the DP puts a cutter in at the last minute meaning a quick change to another place. 10 years ago i used a cabled boom mostly and a wireless boom for steadicam walk and talks and things like that. Today i use wireless boom 99% of the time, that to me shows a change in shooting styles, multiple cameras and 2 booms on most shots. Laying two boom cables out for every shot is a big ask. To go full circle here and take this back to topic, when the debate was around which wireless to choose and what features were needed or not I would put remote adjustable xmitter trim at the top. I would go as far to say that for me its the 2nd biggest breakthrough in Location recording in the last 20 years, first would be multitrack recording. IMHO only. i used the TRX900 boom xmitter for the first time 7 years ago and after 1 week i wondered how i had ever worked without it. As Jack said. It changed my life. To get back to your question. Yes I think maybe it has something to do with money as on big budget films there is often many more moving parts, crew, cameras etc so having good wireless booms helps a lot. You hope this is the case but more often than not it isn't. Actors are often "in the moment" and don't think of telling the Mixer their intentions. But the thing is often you do get a heads up from the Dir who asks them during a take to change their performance but my point is what do you do if you are on a wireless boom system where you cannot change the gain when the actor tells you. You can't ask them to cut while you reset. Tony

    Thats interesting Phillip as the tests i have done with going cable into my Sonosax ST8 Mixer and via TRX743 have it sounding different, not better. I would argue the preamp in the 743 is as good as the sonosax mixer. I guess its fair to say we have quite different ways of working but i do get where you are coming from. Tony

    What i was meaning is that, if the set and situation allows you to use a cabled boom then that is great but i would have thought that these days cabled boom is the exception and not the rule on film sets. Shooting styles have changed and the speed and versatility a wireless boom provides makes it an obvious choice. Tony

    Really? so the boom op regulates the level by moving the boom out and in depending on the level? what if the acoustic is live and roomy or there is a lot of bg noise. I am not sure this is always going to work on a practical level. There are other ways to "skin the cat" just not as good as turning the transmitter level down. Tony Cabled Booms dont work for all sets, but if you are lucky enough to work on a set that allows all cabled boom then thats great. Not my world thats for sure. Tony

    Here is a question for Lectro users working on Series or Movies, assuming booms and lavs are wireless. What do you do when an actor suddenly changes their performance during a take, on a rolling reset or on take 2, as in they either raise or lower their performance, perhaps they shout one or just do a read that is 10db louder. Maybe the Director runs them through a series of line reads with wildly different performance levels. Relating to the debate above, I can see why Mixers like the comfort of what they know and trust and what they deem necessary, but having used and still use a combo of both Zax and lectro I have never had an answer to the question above with Lectro.
