  1. Hello All, Matthew Wilson here. Many of you knew me as the former beard of Pro-Sound in NYC, to those I keep in touch with I hope you're mixing well and to those I've fallen out of touch with let me hear from you! To catch you up, I run a production venue in Manhattan mostly these days and when I'm not day playing as a utility or doing field repairs on carts, I settle in for the winter at Montclair State University trying to impart any knowledge I can into the future ears of our legacy. I've decided in addition to my ramblings I'd like to share with my students the things you want them to know and how they can enter the field after school putting their best ear forward and not making a mess of it for the rest of us. Pictures, clips and stories tend to work the best. Most of my students are at the point of discovering if what we do can really be a career so don't be shy to share the low points along with the high. Things we cover already, but are welcome to go into more are proper job bidding, including fair pay for labor and gear, knowing what gear they're ready to work with and how to build their network to move up. I'm not sending my students out with 2nd mortgage carts looking for features, but they do get excited at the shiny things like all of us do. What do you want them to know coming into the field behind you and what can I do to best prepare them to carry on and hold the line? Hope to see you all at AES this fall!
  2. New Zaxcom Products

Hi PinkywinkieOZ, You won't be able to use the Touch and the FP8 at the same time. There is the future possibility of a Serial "hub" similar to what will be found in the Oasis.
  3. Lavalier wiring for P48 XLR

The best way to accomplish that is to wire it for a wireless tx I.E. Lectro or Sennheiser and use an XLR power supply by Ambient or PSC. The alternative is to purchase a hardwired Lav and have a usual suspect wire an adapter in line with the power supply. Feel free to PM me for details.
  4. Hi Karri, The audio from a 4060 will most likely not be useable. I've done SFX recordings on gun ranges before, it is definitely a lesson in gain structure. Use a mic that you're not afraid of hurting and have a backup ready. This is a case where pads will be your friend and if you don't have it, now would be a great time to invest in or rent some Neverclip enabled equipment. There are some threads here and on Facebook with lots of sage advice. You might also want to contact Member Watson Wu who very recently completed a library of gunshots with all sorts of equipment. You'll find similar answers to Nate's ^ about Cos11's working, but it'll be tricky to gain and mix it to go between gun shots and dialogue. Might not be a bad idea to go with two mics and two trims. Above all else remember to wear heavy duty earplugs under your cans and get used to mixing with them before you roll. Protecting your ears will be worth mediocre audio over losing your hearing and not being able to work.
  5. Nomad Mirroring Failure

Hey Cory, There are several factors in play here, but I would not consider that "normal" operation for a Nomad. While similar issues can/have happened, mirroring should continue work as your friend is expecting it to. Here's a short list of things to check below starting with what Chris suggested and checking the software. Software Version against known bugs Corrupted media? (be sure they are formatting the mirror card in the machine regularly) Processor Speed Does mirror card work under "normal" conditions It may take longer but they could change the mirror mode to ON vs Continuous. (with long takes it can tax the processor to do both cards at once, though many people, including myself, do this all the time with no issue.) As Glenn said definitely give them a call and your friend will likely be back up and running happy again in no time.
  6. Thanks to Silver Sound and the mixers for letting Pro-Sound join in the fun!
  7. No worries on the 416! It'll be there!
  8. k-tek avalon vs klassic boom pole..

Caio, If you or a friend will be at NAB let me know and I'll make sure a new pair of gloves is set aside for you.
  9. a note from Cinela

Cinela Products will be available to view and demo at Pro-Sound booth # C8649
  10. New SSM Wireless TX From Lectrosonics

The April Fools Joke is on all of us this year, this is (will be) a real product!
  11. An interesting idea... I wonder if it were necessary would it be easier to accomplish after the fact as there are already many ways to encrypt drives and folders after the recording process? Adding any processes other than recording (i.e. file storage) to my workflow worries me. At the end of the day my main concern is the quality of the audio and the least steps to get the best audio is my goal. (if only it were so easy)
  12. Recording Error?

Double checking because I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but on the Pix which playback source are you listening to? The CF card or the SSD? Have you listened to the files from the hard drive yet? You may have a corrupted card causing the issue when listening on your computer, but not on the SSD which may be your default playback source on the Pix.
  13. Nagra technician

Pro-Sound in NYC readily stocks parts for Nagras. They repair, tune and sell units often. They can also set you up with a rental while yours is at the Nagra Spa!
  14. Right now - NBC Peter Pan massively out of sync ?

Per usual Senator you raise an excellent point, I did watch the broadcast and more importantly several friends enjoyed the broadcast without being any the wiser of our nitpicking. With the bulk of my experience actually being in live mixing the combination of the two worlds is no small feat. My headphones are off to those that performed both on and especially off screen last night.
  15. Right now - NBC Peter Pan massively out of sync ?

Courtney - You are more than likely spot on as would normally be the case regarding a backup track, I don't recall anyone talking about studio days, but certainly they had them and the track was ready to go. They had one for the parade so I think it would be safe to guess the backup track was there. We would have to ask the engineers what they did on the fly. I'll ask around and post what I hear, if someone else doesn't beat me to it. I imagine they are all still asleep if not recovering following last night/this morning's wrap party and a LONG couple of months of blocking and rehearsal. Maybe we can all team up for the next broadcast!
  16. Right now - NBC Peter Pan massively out of sync ?

I did not have the opportunity to work on the production directly, however I know several members of the cast and production and have kept in touch throughout the last several weeks. Jack is correct, only the music was done by playback. All sync issues are as simple as that sync issues at the local end. No sync issues here, though I do live close to direct broadcast distance of the stage. Our friends at NBC don't quite have the guts to go all in for the live orchestra yet and I don't think we can blame them. A lot of effort went into improving from last years broadcast of Sound of Music and I think we all heard the payoff. Still plenty of room for improvement, but the wheels are already in motion for the next great adventure!
  17. Looks like I might have found a double post for this earlier, so I'm including my response here for everyone as well. Hi Cory, Unfortunately the DR-70D is not available as of yet. A little birdie told me it might be shipping from Tascam as of December. However, I do know a usual suspect that would be the perfect place where you can check out the 60D MKII (which has essentially all the same parts in a different box) the biggest differences are the number of XLR's and the physical look of the unit. Feel free to PM me for more specific info!

  19. Rycote Cyclone

Rycote is making their way through NYC today! Visit your usual suspects and get an ears on listen to these awesome windshields! Rycote is here to answer all of your questions and to help you hear why the Cyclone is the must have Windshield! Spent the morning listening to the Cyclone with Rycote. Feel free to post questions here for general discussion or message me for direct contact info!
  20. washing windjammer

Available direct from Rycote's website What is the best way to clean a Softie and/or Windjammer? A. Both Softies and Windjammers are supplied with a Hair Brush, customers often think that we are joking by including this; but it is actually very important to keep the synthetic fibers as free from tangles as possible to ensure the best possible performance from our products. Softies should be dry brushed thoroughly to remove as much dirt and debris as possible, and to remove any matting that may occur. You should never submerge your Softie in water as this may damage the product.
  21. OT after 12, or 12.5?

Hi Folks, I don't usually post on here, but this is one I have a lot of experience with. Though my primary experience is with live mixing we work very similarly. While I also negotiate non-union contracts to the T and the dot of the I, I often try to negotiate for similar terms because it keeps my days similar. 12 hour day with 1 hour lunch (non provided) and 1 hour dinner (provided or not) Anything beyond that is OT I will admit we're a little whiny on the live side so we also get a 10 minute break every two hours (which we all know becomes 15) at the end of the day it's a balance between work and rest. I've also worked salary mixing positions on tours and various university gigs. The pay is even... the hours not so much. At the end of the day even though it's a job and I want to go "home", I also do it because I have a true passion for the job and there are very few fields out there where the same can be said and I consider myself lucky to be a member of such a talented group of professionals.
