  1. I bought a new pair recently in this current generation, I'll post if I run into the issue. My last pair went about 3 years or so before I had problems.
  2. Thanks for the heads up, about to try out a new HMa this week and that would have thrown me off as well.
  3. Thanks Jeff, looking forward to this one!
  4. Another tool that could possibly help with monitoring in these situations.. http://www.pro-sound.com/p/SSMYLESCOMM.html Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
  5. +1 Pop N Work, having 2 door options can be helpful Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
  6. Oh no! I celebrated a day early...Enjoy! Salud!
  7. What to use outputs/auxes for? A slew of things indeed.. It depends on the type of shoot of course, but you'll soon think of plenty of uses and wish you had even more I'm sure.. A few that come to mind, hopefully not all at once.. Comtek/IFB feeds for producer/director-types and clients (and all their friends and children), wired or wireless boom op(s) and utility, or different mixes/feeds for all of the above. Multiple camera feeds, backup recorders, feed to video assist for playback, a cart speaker, a remote speaker for talent cues or a distant client monitor or an audio gag, feed for EPK, feed to an earwig, sending a mix to another sound mixer. Lets see what else...
  8. +1 Michael. Perhaps what we need is an "It gets better" thread...
  9. Eric makes a good point, I stressed fixing Neutricons for a while before switching all my breakaways to 7 pin. 7 pin connectors are also a little cheaper to purchase if you make a lot of them. Since I work with these so often I found more benefit in using 7 pin. Although for some reason several years ago I decided to wire my 7 pins with the ground on pin 7 instead of 1. This has never actually been a problem for me, but I realize its not standard, so every time I get a week off I tell myself 'time to rewire all those 7 pins' but I never do it of course. Over the years there have only been a handful of occasions where I might have needed to work with another soundman's breakway cable so compatibility would be an issue, and in those cases they often happen to have neutricon cables anyway, so we just use my extras since I have plenty to spare and it doesn't really matter how mine are wired. That said, next time I have a week off I'm gonna rewire those cables...
  10. John, when you say XLR-5 pin adapter are you talking about a cable? How is it wired? Its important to note that the cable/TA5 connector can be wired for either Mic or Line level. If you are using a cable that matches the output setting of your mixer and the signal is still hot it can be helpful to use an in-line pad. JT
  11. I've been asked to record mono files for the show I'm on right now, quite likely for that reason and easy access to specific character iso tracks. Probably the first time I've ever not recorded poly files.
  12. Great idea Kevin! I have a bunch of those sitting around but never thought of this application. I like using Cubs but find that they often pick up a lot of vibration when attached directly to a surface.. thanks for sharing
  13. There are also several varieties of these lights with power switches and/or dimming options for less than 10 bucks on Amazon. I always found the switch helpful so you don't have to unplug it every time. Before the BDS V4U was released I made a BDS to cigarette lighter jack/USB adapter with an inline switch, I mostly ended up using this to power a USB light. Then when I saw other folks with booklights that worked well I always felt a little silly having done all that. Oh well..
  14. This of course depends on your priorities. I always liked the ease of PFL and routing on the 788 when using a CL8, but I have grown to prefer the Nomads interface. I think Jack and Rado have explained this well already but the extra button push really only takes half a second more than an SD type switch and you do not need to hold one button while simultaneously pushing the other like a keyboard shift key (this is what I originally imagined) you just push them sequentially so this can be done one-handed and quickly once you are used to it. Its also helpful to note that the Nomad remembers which channel you last listened to on PFL and returns to that next time you push PFL, and a PFL "submix" is quick to make and helpful at times. I find the HPF pretty quick to get to and I don't often find myself changing EQ midtake, FWIW I also never bump it accidentally when trying to blindly reach for a trim pot. One of my favorite features is still the headphone matrix. I find it much faster to cycle through custom monitoring selections, and I usually adjust the monitor modes on a shoot by shoot basis since it is so easy. This to me makes up for the half second lost in PFL and then some..
