Hello All! Is it only us who use the "Scene + Shot + Take" sequence on our slates for scripted material (in french: scene + plan + prise) ? Just wondering how other Quebec soundies keep up with the "shot" (plan) info on their recorders. I have the Maxx and usually put the shot in the "notes" field... but i find its not ideal because I have to write all of it each time... any suggestions? Thanks in advance... Franky

Hi guys, I hope that you could help me. I would like to make myself an USB serial cable for connecting 3 QRXs together. The problem is that I have already done one as it said in the manual but it did not work. I have connected the pins on USBs like this: QRX USB OUT -> QRX USB IN 2 -> 1 3 -> 4 If I try to change gain on the slave unit it does not work ... Now I am not sure if I did the cable right ... We are adding a case for the Zaxcom ERX's to our line up. We are expecting to be shipping these in the beginning of August and we expect the retail price to be less than $15 US. We are also looking for feed back on the design of the case since we are still making minor changes to it. Here are photos of the prototype.

Guys and Gals - When mirroring from a Deva 5 and or a Deva 16, does anyone have any experience with SD cards being used in CF adapters ? I had a shoot yesterday with the client handing me an SD card. They did not plan on any sort of data wrangling process and were just taking all the files home on CF cards (pictures) and an SD card (sound) Not a huge problem - but it could have been, if they were any tighter on their flight. I did have to get out the laptop and transfer from my CF card to their SD card. It might have been the very first time I had used the SD slot on my MacBook Pro! Anyway, it just made me think that it might be a good investment to get and work with a couple of SD cards and appropriate CF adapters - SanDisk Extreme Pro seems to work fine for me. Any issues anyone knows of ? FW power transfers just fine? or not MF

I bought a Mix 12 a week ago and I'm experiencing a problem with the ZaxNet trim assignment. My setup is: Fusion 12; 2 QRX100 going into the Fusion via AES Inputs 5-8; TRX LANC IDs are 13-16 (according to what Howy said about adding +8 to the digital inputs TX ID); Mix 12 set 1-4 Analog, 1-8 Digital (so, my wireless were on 9-12 Channels). Trying i.e. the first TX, I've selected Mix 12 Input Trim Tx ZaxNet in the Digital Input 5. Even with this selection, I can see the Mix12 trim changing the channel input level, not the tx gain level. So, I'm not being able to control Zaxnet trims for my digital inputs. Any ideas is appreciated. PS. I've already wrote to Howy and he's looking into the problem. Asking here too, bacause maybe someone here could have been in this situation and solved in some way. Thanks, Vale.

FreqFinder version 1.8 for Android has been released and iOS version 2.3 is soon to follow. And what is new to both is worthy of a little bit of explanation. Settings which will affect the intermodulation calculation have been added. iPhone users had the 3x3 and 2x7 settings previously. The transmitter spacing and intermod spacing factors will be added soon. A summary of each of the settings: - Enable 7th Order Products This setting was enabled by default. Turning it off will provide you with more compatible channels at the cost of the quality of those channels. 7th Order Products tend to be much less severe and therefore users may wish to disable their calculation. - Enable 3 TX 3rd Order Products This setting was also enabled by default. Turning it off will provide you with more compatible channels at the cost of the quality of those channels. 3 TX 3rd Order products occur mainly when you have large groups of radios in tighter spaces. One might disable this if he were reasonably sure that the transmitters will be rather spread out. - Intermodulation Spacing Factor The default for this setting has always been at its least conservative. This is the padding between a transmitter and any intermodulation product. Increasing this value will result in fewer compatible channels. ***Note that the number itself is rather arbitrary. I do ask that you play with different settings and if you come to any interesting conclusions, I would very much like to hear them*** - Transmitter Spacing Factor This factor determines the minimum spacing between transmitters according to their bandwidth. The calculation averages two transmitters' bandwidths and then multiplies by this factor to determine the spacing. The default for this setting has always been at its least conservative, however a couple of transmitters have built in alternative minimum spacings (Lectrosonics has 300khz). This setting will override that minimum if it calculates a larger spacing. Even with maximum settings, a user will still get 10 channels out of a single Lectrosonics block. These controls are meant to provide extra protection and still allow a users with larger transmitter counts the ability to squeeze more channels in. I would recommend for most cart setups dialing the settings to maximum and keeping them there. I want to note that for these settings, you can not dial down the settings midway through adding transmitters and expect the first set of transmitters to stay protected at the higher settings. When you change the settings, all of the transmitters are protected at those settings. On that note, hopefully everyone has noticed the "Protection" switch on the transmitter details page. That is meant to add transmitters which would contribute to intermodulation but for which you do not care about the performance of the transmitters. In the future I'd like to have three protection options (NONE, DEFAULT, and EXTREME) that would allow for extra protection to selected transmitters. Does anyone know the travel time from analog input to analog output of the Nomad 10? Is there any latency? I'll run a test at some point, but just wondering if anyone has this info already. -Thanks Vincent

Hey Everyone, Production took off on me before I could take my ERX off their camera. This was in Englishtown NJ, but they were on their way to Bethlehem PA and the crew is from LA. So here is a something that has been puzzling me for a little while, despite my best efforts with google JW search and the Nomad manual - How the hell do I bus and get AES out of a Nomad? do I have to build a DB-15 to XLR breakout cable? (I am not very practiced with a soldering iron) How about in the bus routing menu? The reason I ask - I was geeking-out over my friends F-5 the other day and I noticed that the XLR inputs had the usual LINE/MIC/+48 switches, but they also had Analog/AES switch. This in-and-of-itself is not amazing, but I started thinking about sending up to 4 separate tracks to the camera with my existing break-away cable and how happy that would make post. Is my understanding of AES skewed (naïve)? Do I really need to use a breakout cable? Why does the Nomad need a breakout cable, but SD 664, 633, 788, etc. can route AES through the existing XLR outputs? Wouldn't it be swell to keep an audio stream digital rather than going in and out of A/D-D/As? Thank you, Ben

Hi All, My basic question: for the frequent flying mixer, do you prefer to break your sound cart and contents down into pelican cases or to use a shock absorbing rack mount case (i.e. SKB)? Details: I'm building a first proper sound cart. I'm drawn to rack-mount carts, as I like the idea of not having to build out the cart often, but open to being talked out of this. I travel for shoots as a bag based mixer an average of two weeks a month, so I'm often flying. I'm in talks to do a feature overseas and need some advice on putting together a traveling cart, but I'll also be mixing independent films in my hometown of Portland, OR. The cart will need to hold: -Zaxcom Nomad -Mix-8 -3x QRX100 + Multiplexer -Shark fins on antenna tree -IFB antenna -2x 7" monitor -Case or drawer for 6 TRX900's and DPA lavs in micro cases and 2 CMC6MK41's -2x booms -Power section (Still working this out, maybe PSC LiFE battery or just NP1's and BDS v4 or Furman, PSC Power max and marine deep cell batteries) -cables, headphones etc. I'm interested in building the cart myself out of 80/20 aluminum extrusions (thanks to Jeff Wexler for that) and have the assistance of a good friend who is a medical cart designer at Moto. Advice from anyone who has build a Chindha style sound cart or rack-mount sound cart that travels well, or has another option would be much appreciated.

After running across checked my Zaxcom antennae and found them to be a little off of the correct length for my block. So I want to ask, how important is antenna length? I have two QRX receivers and some TRX transmitters. They have all operated well-enough. During my measurements I found some to be 1/4" too long, which puts them 2 blocks away according to the Zaxcom antenna length chart. The current TRX and QRX manuals show the same chart. I used precise digital calipers for the measurement. I can't say I noticed any difference now compared to before. There are so many variables that affect reception, how do I know if the antenna length was a weak point? I'd like to hear from Glenn and Larry. Mark O.

Can the ZaxPaq be used to house four QRX100 units with the MicPlexer placed connected from outside of the ZaxPaq? if so are there any drawbacks to this approach? Thanks, B

Shout out to my UK Soundies! Hope you're having a busy year... I'm looking at buying a wireless link to camera and could really do with some advise, please. I've found a lot of info on here and in other areas but nothing that hits the nail on the head. My question is: what frequencies are people in the UK using (and plan on using in the future) for wireless hops, given that some frequency distance is required between the hop and the adjacent receivers? I'm currently using the Audio Ltd envoy system (channel 38) and although my 4 mic RX (microns) are in the low end of the band and the hop TX is in the 22-24Mhz area, Im still getting loads of spray on my Mic RX when in the bag (no surprise as the Hz are still quite close). So, I'm wearing the hop TX on my belt and using my body as a 'RF sponge' but my range is still radically reduced. The hop TX are also on low output power, which i believe is 30mw. Now im looking at buying a hop so id like to know if there are any bands i could sneak into that are far enough away from the 606-614 band so as my hop could sit happily in the bag with the mic RX? The new zaxcom TRX900CL camera link looks perfect for me but im sure even with their attention to reducing RF spray, im still going to loose a lot of juice from my mic systems if the hop is used in the ch38 block. What are you guys & girls doing? Any advise is much appreciated. Thanks, Doug

Hi All, Ok, I've seen in the version notes where remote transmitter frequency changing is supposedly possible with the Zaxcom wireless transmitters. This feature is at best undocumented beyond the rev. notes. Does it really exist, and how does one do such a thing!? I've got TRX900LAs, a 942 and IFB100 Thanks, John

Upgrading from 744t to Zaxcom Nomad. I'm leaning towards the lite as I'm used to jam synching TC via lemo periodically. Do you guys recommend purchasing the 10 over the lite initially and saving $350 plus shipping for a Zaxcom factory upgrade to Nomad 10 later if necessary? Shooting on primarily on Red and like the idea of wireless TC to maintain TC synch after reboot, but also interested in TC buddy system as a workflow down the road. Also sending wireless feed to director or scriptie could be useful, but haven't had that request during 744t days. Other benefits that Nomad 10 users have enjoyed that no Nomad lite workflow exists for? Thanks for the help!

So Maxx is currently well into beta testing and so far it is passing with flying colors. Just a few more software tweaks and they will start shipping. My impressions so far: I like that Maxx is very compact and light weight. The screen brightness when turned to 11 is quite bright - Zaxcom has somehow made the screen even brighter than in Nomad - and the removal of the plastic overlay cuts down on glare which adds to the visibility. The menu structure is very similar to Nomad so anybody who is familiar with Nomad can jump right in with no learning curve. I like the added dedicated PFL buttons. As for the down side - they are all software related annoyances which will be fixed prior to release.

Hi, I have an AES breakout cable (terminating in XLR) for my Nomad and also the Remote Audio mixer cable for Nomad. I'm wondering if it's possible to successfully and reliably transmit an AES signal through the Remote Audio cable? It would be into a Sony XDCAM (don't have one handy for testing). I think I remember reading somewhere a good while ago that it's possible to run into problems running an AES signal through "regular" audio cables, so I wanted to check. Thanks!

So I thought I should share my experience with my newly configured Zaxcom bag and how it has been performing. I took a little inspiration from Brian's "Blue Lagoon" story and also from Rado's recent article in Sound & Picture. While I was in preproduction for a show that I would be working on, I was informed that there were going to be scenes where GoPro's were going to be mounted to off-road racing cars and that they would be driving very far off into the desert, far out of the range of any wireless bag reception. In the past, they said they have simply boomed bits and pieces of the two-way radio but that it never sounded great and that it never really captured the moment of thrills because a driver can't drive and operate the radio at the same time. In this case I brought up the ability of Zaxcom wireless to record with timecode sync so it really didn't matter if the Tx's went out of range. Every time I bring this up to camera operators and producers that I'm working with for the first time, they are blown away by this. They agreed that this was definitely the way to go and were excited that it was a new way they could easily get audio regardless of where the cars drove, and capture the passion of the moment. My bag currently consists of a Nomad 12, 2 QRX's, MicPlexer, 2 TRX900LA's, and 2 TRX900LANC's. I had two Lectro SNA's feeding MicPlexer up on my harness like Rado had in the Sound & Picture article; thanks again Rado!
