    Best Reporters Microphone

Hey Guys, what is the best "reporters" mic? What about the Rode Reporters mic? I have a wireless Sennheiser e835 which sounds OK, it's cardioid and the Rode is omni, what do you think?
  2. Has anyone had luck modifying the new version of the Rode Blimp (with the rycote lyres) to fit the Rode NT4? I'm trying to find a windshield solution that won't cost more than the mic :| Based on the pictures, it seems like it should be easy to simply unscrew the current lyres and replace them with the 30mm upgrade sold by Rycote (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/629616-REG/Rycote_042218_042218_30mm_Lyre_Upgrade.html/mode/edu) I'd love to hear if anyone has any other ideas or knows if my solution will work or not. Thanks! mike

    Rode NTG-3 strange distortion?

Hi guys I've had a strange problem with my NTG-3 for the past few days that has thus far gone away but not sure if it'll come back. I was on a shoot a few days ago and as soon as I put my headphones on I could tell the sound was way off. There was a fair bit of noise for one, almost like I had it plugged into a super crappy pre-amp and had cranked the recording volume too high. There was also some crackling and even points where the volume/recording level would temporarily become low and then bump back up, kind of like when a wireless transmitter is out of range or on a bad frequency. I unplugged everything, tried it out on my Zoom H5 (worked no problem) and then plugged everything back into my C100 and for now it seems to be ok. Has anyone had a problem like this before at all? The only thing I know of that has changed is my deadcat/windshield. I was filming a little too close to a camp fire a week ago and the material melted slightly, resulting in some slightly tough/burnt areas vs. hairlike texture. Could that be somehow causing these issues? Thanks Sean
  5. I cannot afford a MHK416 just yet so a Rode NTG-3 seems to be a decent high(ish) quality alternative (better than a Sennheiser ME66) particularly for outdoor work. Am I correct in thinking this? Can someone recommend a mic, similar in audio quality to the NTG-3, that would be similar to the Sennheiser ME64 (i.e. cardioid or hyper-cardioid, better for boom work indoors)? I figure that some will say "get a Schoeps" or such like but that would be, for the moment, not affordable. I'm trying to build up the gear slowly. Thanks in advance.

    New Rode Stereo VideoMic X

New, interesting stereo mic coming from Rode : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RscPsKiFXI http://www.rodemic.com/svmx Curious about the sound sample in the video clip - recorded on the DSLR shown or another device??? No mention. The flamenco guitar clip doesn't seem Kosher - overdubbed solo, maybe flown in from another clip? Apparently made of aluminum rather than plastic which is nice. Cheers, Dave

K-Zepp or Rode for budget blimp

Hi all, I'm new here so don't shoot me if this topic has already been made, but I've been looking around and haven't found much info on the K-Tek K-Zepps? I was originally gonna spring for a Rode (I'd love a Rycote but budget), but saw a comment pointing out the K-Zepp. I was curious to hear if anybody has any opinions?

  10. Hi, I understand there have been a few topics on these, but I think mostly they've been about using them for recording dialogue etc through mixers and external mics. So here's one regarding the sound quality of built-in mics. This coming February I'm taking a three week trip to Vietnam, Thailand and probably Cambodia in between. Now, obviously I'd love to record all these cool exotic sounds and atmos you find in locations like that, but since it's a holiday, I probably won't want to risk bringing my pro equipment (like a 302), which would attract attention, be a bit heavy and unpractical to carry around etc etc. So it'll probably be handheld recorders. I own a Zoom H4 (not H4n) and a Zoom H2n. What I would like to know is if you know about a recorder you know has substantially better sound quality with the internal mics (signal to noise ratio, stereo imaging etc). Also, does someone have any experience with the Rode Stereo Videomic Pro? I'm also wondering if that might up the quality when recording into the H2n, instead of using the internal mics?
  11. Lately I've been having noise issues with my 416 and my rode blimp, namely the switch-craft connector that connects to the 416. I've had to use snot tape inside and outside the mic to xlr connection and it STILL makes some noise when the pole is moved around a little to hard. HAs anybody had any problems with the Rode Blimp and a 416? It seems to me there is just a bit too much room between them when they are connected. I want to upgrade to a Rycote or a Cinela mount at some point, but for right now this is what I got. Anybody in the same boat?
  12. Here is a picture of my custom Stereo XY mic setup for use with the RODE Blimp, x2 Apex 185 Cardiods. 185 Mount is Attached to a Bendable Tripod (Via Tape) and the tripod is bent around the Blimp to line up the capsules.
  13. Not sure how many of you know about these already, but I thought I'd post about it anyway with some pics for those that do not as I think this is a very good solution for any that have been looking. I bought a Sennheiser MKH-416 last year and like many of us newbies dabbling in the DSLR video and audio world I started with the Rode NTG-3 as a first shotgun mic. When I decided to upgrade to the 416 and sold the NTG-3 I was sad to see the storage case that the Rode came with go. For those that dont know the Rode NTG-3 comes with a very nice aluminum, pipe bomb looking, rubber gasket sealed storage case. There is nice squishy black foam inside the barrel and in the end caps as well. And since the NTG-3 and MKH-416 are nearly identical in every way, the 416 happens to fit in the NTG-3's storage tube. So I began looking around to see where I could get just the storage tube alone. Turned out no one sold it by itself and most places I talked to didnt even know what I was talking about. Eventually I found myself contacting Rode at 1-925-548-9451 and learned that the case is called a Baton in Australia and a Storage Cylinder here in the states by Rode's customer service people and that the part number is: 310-001-1-2. After talking to a Rode rep here in the states, he was nice enough to just give me a storage cylinder for free! I didnt even have to pay shipping. While I cant guarantee they will do that for anyone that calls, I at least wanted to make those that werent aware something like this existed and will be MUCH less expensive and IMO better than cases made by say ALFA (LINK) or any others. And I figured even if Rode wanted to sell you one I doubt they would charge much. Anyway, hope this info is of some use to someone. Just trying to give back a little.
