JonG
I recently acquired a Whirlwind MD1, which is essentially what a Sound Devices MM-1 is, with some differences of course. It features a Mic/Line input, Line out, and Headphone out, and is powered by two 9V batteries. Curiously, it has 18V Phantom power, which is a bit confusing for me, because this would greatly limit the usage one could have for the device, since most mics that need phantom power are designed not necessarily to need a full 48V, but to have some headroom. Is there a way to mod this device to provide a "normal" 48V Phantom Power? I hear many people say that the 9V system wouldnt work for a full 48V, but I am reminded that the Denecke Phantom Power device runs off of one 9V battery, and the Sound Devices MM-1 runs off of two AA batteries, so it must be possible. I am no EE but this seems to be a reasonable assumption.
John Blankenship
Yes, it's doable, but you're better off buying a purpose-built device.
studiomprd
" 18V Phantom power, which is a bit confusing for me, " 2 x 9V = 18 V a lot of electrit mic's work at lower voltages, and this voltage is popular in the SC market.
