Rasmus Wedin
Great to hear. I have a mkh 60. Love the sound, but it's so damn big. Have been looking at both the 8060 and the DPA 4017. There's one thing I don't get. Why does the Mkh 60 have a higher list price than the 8060? Isn't the 8060 sort of "the new and better"-version? Early on there was talk about handling noise. You're not having any problems with that?
Chris McCallum
I have the new Rycote Lyre mount for it with the isolated cable "box" which seems to overcome all of that. I haven't yet used it in demanding situations but will report back It isn't so big when you take the XLR barrel off and use the hardwired connbox in the Rycote mount http://www.rycote.com/resources/microphone_database/sennheiser_mkh_8060/ Without the XLR it is only 5.7 inches long
RadoStefanov
MKH8060 is smaller, improved with less materials product. Price is competitive against everything. I got mine for $999 last May. Great to hear. I have a mkh 60. Love the sound, but it's so damn big. Have been looking at both the 8060 and the DPA 4017. There's one thing I don't get. RadoStefanov
Also the mkh8060 only goes down to 50HZ. The problems with handling must be only with the MKH8050 because I have 4 MKH8040s and 2 mkh8060 and never had any problems. using invisiion lyre I have the new Rycote Lyre mount for it with the isolated cable "box" which seems to overcome all of that. Jaymz
Another happy owner here. Very light, good reach and can actually work well indoors (though I use an 8040 indoors usually). Also the mkh8060 only goes down to 50HZ. The problems with handling must be only with the MKH8050 because I have 4 MKH8040s and 2 mkh8060 and never had any problems. using invisiion lyre Does seem like the 8040 rolls off a bit quicker, MKH8040 MKH8050
RadoStefanov
Jaymz, What support/windshield system do you use. I use a rycote WS-2 but I think I can even put the 8060 in a WS-1. It is funny when other mixers see me they always ask what mic I have inside...

I too use the lyres with the connbox and my mkh 60 is dead silent. Those guys at Rycote shure know their stuff.

But I've sort of been killing two birds with one stone, I do a lot of effects recording with an M/S setup, so I use the "Rycote Stereo Windshield Kit AG" as my universal system (for now). Rich Reilly
Chris, What do you like about it compared to other mics you have?
Chris McCallum
Chris, What do you like about it compared to other mics you have? The off axis sound is smoother compared to the 416, it has the same (or greater) "reach" of the 416 but less harsh in the mid range and seems to have very low self noise. My first listening is all the benefits of a 416 but in a smoother more grown up package!
Jaymz
which figure 8 mic do you use for your M/S setup? An MKH30, with either the 8040 or 8060 Mid depending on the material. Would love it if they released an MKH8030.

Me too. waited for a year and a half, gave up and bought an mkh30...
gregd
Chris, Have you recorded indoors with the 8060? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts of it in a reflective environment. Also, did you purchase the filter module with the mic?. greg.

Hi Greg no I haven't yet, I only picked it up on Friday and have just been playing around with it so far but will report back once I have done a "real" job with it. My guess is it will be a richer sound than I have been getting indoors with my trusty 416, but I tend to use small diaphragm condensers indoors normally and no I didn't get the filter module. RadoStefanov
This is an old indoors sample I did. The MP3 from the site introduces some strange buz but you can get a general idea, http://soundcloud.com/hazna/mkh8060 Chris, Have you recorded indoors with the 8060? RadoStefanov
Try the WS-2 or even the WS-1 " if you are not using the filter. It is so light and small. I would love a MKH8030. Then I can sell my Sanken CSS-5 The WS-2 is what I'd like for the 8060 itself. Eric Toline
This is an old indoors sample I did. The MP3 from the site introduces some strange buz but you can get a general idea, http://soundcloud.com/hazna/mkh8060 Sounds like a guy in a VO booth wearing a lav with the LF rolled off. There's no sense of the space he's in. If that track was played for me as a demo of what the 8060 sounds like I would pass on it, then again I never liked the MKH 60 either. RadoStefanov
It is a vox booth. Studio A at the palms. The bass was rolled off from when I was in the palms casino. Forgot to turn it off. The production wanted the talking heads in studio. Outdoors the 8060 sounds way better... Sounds like a guy in a VO booth wearing a lav with the LF rolled off. There's no sense of the space he's in. RadoStefanov
Eric, do you only use mkh50 outdoors? I can see how the darker MKH50 would have sounded bit better on that voice.
justanross
Hey Rado, I just got set up with wind protection for my MKH50. Haven't tested it out doors yet but when I get a chance I'll let you know. I love all my mics. I have two 416's, MKH40, 50, and 70. My next purchase is going to be a sanken CS3e.
