OmahaAudio
This is weird since it doesn't seem to be associated with the real Bolex (http://www.bolex.ch). I see a lawsuit...
Angelo Waldron
Agreed. Looks good but still vaporware. What's the crank for?
Boomboom
Maybe using solar energy would have taken too much space on the unit so they 're using the crank to recharge...
Jim Feeley
It appears the Digital Bolex people licensed the Bolex name from Bolex International S.A. My guess: they're hotrodding an off-the-shelf box camera of some sort. But that's just a guess. Check out the specs and sample footage here: http://www.digitalbolex.com/ Fun idea, but I'm not going to be first in line to buy one. Though if it works well, that'll be totally cool. OmahaAudio
It appears the Digital Bolex people licensed the Bolex name from Bolex International S.A. Where'd you get that information? There's nothing on either the real Bolex website or this "digitalbolex" website" that suggests that.
Jim Feeley
Where'd you get that information? There's nothing on either the real Bolex website or this "digitalbolex" website" that suggests that. My hunch started with an answer in the FAQ on their kickstarter page: ===== Why no international sales? Our current agreement with Bolex states that we may only ship cameras within the United States. Anyone with a US mailing address can purchase a camera. If you're an international buyer interested in purchasing a camera, we suggest checking out http://www.myus.com/. ===== Then they added more info: ===== Why are you using the name Bolex? Isn't that trademarked? We're working in partnership with Bolex International, SA. The collaborators on this project are based in Los Angeles, Toronto, China, and Switzerland. ===== And then I talked to some people. Note that I wrote "it appears" because I haven't totally nailed this down. Not sure I will; depends on some other stuff... I don't think anything nefarious is going on. But I don't think this will end up being a $3300 (or whatever) Alexa.
OmahaAudio
Just got an email from Bolex in Switzerland saying that they are, in fact, co-operating with Digital Bolex. I sure hope that their final design looks better than the "prototype" illustration.
Marc Wielage
You gotta wonder what the crank on the side does... number crunching?
Rich Reilly
"You gotta wonder what the crank on the side does" For how these things go, maybe a manual fan;)
soundslikejustin
They said you can use it to scroll through menu functions in one of the videos.
Marc Wielage
Maybe you crank it faster for high-speed shooting...
Boomboom
Lol You could probably discard the wheel and hook a drill shank right on the shaft for very speedy shots... And reversed shots too!
cjh
Hmmm, I think its all a load of bollocks... Looks like a very good prank to me :-)
Boomboom
Mmm... I was starting to think the same but there's more explanation... These vintage cam lovers seem serious! Audio's said to be 16b/48k through xlrs and indeed, the crank is like a selector for menus... http://www.digitalbolex.com/ 2500$ for now. I doubt we see much of them through our work though but who knows...
