Rob Stalder
Received this notification from ASSg in my email - another good reason to be a member. Have Your Say in the Motion Picture Production Agreement August 15, 2013 in News by William Ward The Motion Picture Production Agreement (MPPA) is up for negotiations. In a survey by the MEAA, market rates was the number one issue for Film and Television crew. So as part of a log of claims to the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA), the MEAA wants the current award minimums to be replaced by an industry market rate. Below is a link to a market rate survey that will enable the MEAA to define those rates. http://surveys.alliance.org.au/index.php/588987/lang-en All information gathered is confidential and only used in aggregate. The MEAA would appreciate if you could complete the survey as a means of obtaining a better, sustainable and stronger industry.

Rob Stalder
Season's Greetings Dear Rob, Sending our best wishes to all members for a safe and relaxing holiday season. We know some of you are working, and for others it is a tough time of year, but we hope there will be a moment of respite for all, whether it's in the company of family or friends or some quiet solitude away from the madding crowd. If you haven't already heard, we managed to raise $966.60 at the ASSG Awards for the Motion Picture Industry Benevolent Society (MPIBS), which has enabled them to bring some Christmas cheer to those in need. Thank you for your ongoing membership of the ASSG and we look forward to continuing our great work in the coming year (see our list of achievements below). Yours sincerely, ASSG Committee * * * * * * List of Achievements for 2013 Overwhelmingly, our members believe the main value of the ASSG is giving a sense of community and we are very proud to announce that membership has increased by 35% in the past year alone. The first celebration of Sound for Australian Film, screening all Australian films entered into the 2013 ASSG Awards, for members and their guests at Hoyts EQ. Monthly SoundBytes talks featuring prominent members of the ASSG community and forums on innovative new technologies and issues affecting members. Strengthened our relationships with fellow industry guilds and forged trong links with industry associations by actively participating in meetings about issues affecting our industry. Weekly newsletters to members featuring up-to-date information on events, products and personalities in our industry. Increased our national footprint with ASSG representatives in South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. Each state has focused on hosting local events. Rigorously revised the judging and voting process for the ASSG Awards. This year, there were over 40 judges across four states involved in the process. Conducted our first comprehensive survey of members, on a wide-range of topics including matters relating to the operation and purpose of the guild, to current working conditions. Engaged in sponsoring community events and film festivals, such as awarding membership to the best Short Film Sound Design at St Kilda Film Festival and the 48Hour Film Festival, judging KidsFlicks entries and conducting a seminar on sound at the Real Film Festival. Rob Stalder
ANDREW PLAIN 1953-2013 At two metres, Andrew Plain was a very tall man, but he was also a towering figure in other, more important respects. He was one of Australia's most distinguished film sound designers and gained a national and international reputation through the high quality and innovative nature of his work on feature films, documentaries, shorts and television dramas. To read the long list of directors Plain worked with is to read a Who's Who of eminent figures in the Australian cinema, while the high esteem his peers held him in is also evident in the number of nominations and awards he received from the film industry. He played a significant part in shaping Australian film culture. Although Plain had a huge interest in and knowledge of film history and global cinema, he was also famous for his unwavering commitment to keeping the Australian film industry strong and onshore. While a career elsewhere would have allowed him to enjoy much larger budgets, he chose to support the local industry by gathering around him at Huzzah Sound, the company that he created and co-directed with his partner Adrienne Parr, a group of highly talented award-winning film sound personnel. Andrew Keith Plain was born on July 26, 1953, in Melbourne. He was educated at Marion High School in Adelaide and attended Macquarie University in the mid-'70s, graduating with a BA (psychology). He worked as a government psychologist for two years but his long-held interest in film gained impetus when the NSW Institute of Technology (now the University of Technology, Sydney) introduced its bachelor of communications, the first degree of its kind in Australia. Plain was in the first intake and completed his studies in 1980. Plain was known not just for his technical expertise and his prolific output but also for his ability to speak extemporaneously and for the width and depth of his general knowledge. The idea of the Renaissance man, often glibly invoked, could be rightly applied in his case. He was constantly in demand for lectures and master classes at universities and film schools all over Australia and, despite a daunting and relentless work schedule, he always managed to find time for such engagements. He gained a legendary reputation for the wit, lucidity and substance of his teaching and it is no exaggeration to say that he inspired a generation to go on to specialise in film sound. Plain's formidable intellect and his ability to communicate suggested that, if he had chosen to pursue an academic career, it would have been a highly distinguished one. As it was, he crossed with ease the practitioner and theorist divide, co-writing with this author on film sound for various publications, including the MIT book, Voice (2010). In 2001, Plain received the Centenary Medal in the New Year's Honours for service to Australian society and film production, a fitting acknowledgement of his high public and professional standing and his dedication. His vision was of a society in which creativity, critical thinking, technical skills and professional integrity, along with commitment to social justice, were highly valued. He will be remembered as an important film sound designer, innovator, writer, educator and advocate for the local film industry. He was also a generous and very brave man. He suffered chronic and severe pain from a rare form of osteoarthritis, and had an extraordinary amount of surgery over the past decade. It seemed shockingly unfair he also had to battle melanoma. But he never succumbed to self-pity, approaching the illness with his customary mix of equanimity and black humour. Until the end he remained vitally engaged with the issues and events of the world and interested in the lives and welfare of others. Andrew Plain is survived by Adrienne, their daughter Isra and his siblings Lisa and Rose. A memorial service will be held on February 22 at 4pm in Cinema 7 at Hoyts EQ, Lang Road, Moore Park, followed by refreshments at Spectrum Films, Fox Studios.
