Yesterday (28th Aug 2012) there was a Special General Meeting to vote on the adoption of a new Constitution for the ASSG, it was unanimously adopted.

From the president - Doren Kipen;

"This may not appear so important, but I can assure you that this administrative hurdle was standing in the way of everything we want the ASSG to do. I wanted to use this opportunity to thank all of the committee for their time and dedication to this tricky task. Please remember that your committee are all active sound professionals and the work they do on your behalf is all voluntary"

So if you are a working professional sound person or student, thinking about joining an organisation that supports the Australian sound industry - maybe you would like to have a look at this new constitution...

Aussie Sound people - There is an election coming, you may be seriously interested in the following...

Industry unites to support Australian TV production
The ASSG committee encourages all members to join an industry-wide campaign protesting proposed laws that will lead to a severe downturn in Australian TV drama and cost hundreds of jobs for performers and crew.

The federal government’s proposed rules will:

·           Deliver no new Australian drama, documentary or children’s content on the free-to-air multichannels;
·           Allow the networks to screen less Australian content on the free-to-air multichannels than they currently screen;
·           Further dilute the presence of local content on our television screens and
·           Threaten the sustainability of the Australian production industry and the livelihood of casts and crew.

The proposed changes are being rushed to Parliament for approval in March 2013. The time to act is now! There will be immeasurable cultural consequences as Australians grow-up and grow old without seeing their stories and hearing their voices on our screens.

In the lead up to the bill’s entry into parliament we need you to make your voice heard:

1. Sign your name to this petition www.communityrun.org/p/australianstories and share it with your social media network via Facebook and Twitter.

Vale Don Connolly

1929 - 2013

It is with great regret that we inform the ASSG membership of the passing of veteran sound recordist Don Connolly. Don was the sound recordist on some of Australia's most iconic films such as Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Devil's Playground, The Last Wave and Gallipoli and a pioneer of Australian screen sound. He was the recipient of two AFI Awards in 1978 for The Last Wave and 1981 for Gallipoli. In 2000 he received the ASSG Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his significant and enduring contribution to the Australian Screen Sound industry.

The details of his funeral service are listed below.

A Tribute to Don Connolly

Don Connelly 1929 - 2013

A quick look at the IMDB listing for Don shows but a snapshot of  a remarkable career. Thirty five feature films starting with the 1956 Chips Rafferty film Walk Into Paradise then Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Last Wave, Bluefin, Let The Balloon Go, The Odd Angry Shot, The Devils Playground, Gallipoli and The Monkey's Mask in 2000 to name a few. In between the features there were hundreds of hours of television drama. Bob Sloss remembers working with Don at the ABC in Sydney. In the latter part of his career Don made 18 trips to the third world with my father recording documentary & television specials for World Vision. Ian McLoughlin received a masterclass in television recording working as Don's boom-swinger in Perth on a 26 part kids TV show in 1979. Ian remembers the Nagra 4.2 on the card table with the sound sheets & the tin of travel sweets nearby.

Don was not only a sound recordist's recordist he was also a technical engineer of great skill.  A younger Mike Rowen recalls helping Don install the first SAFC mixing facility in an old cinema in Norwood in 1974. A Quad 8 console and Magnatec dubbers. Later on Don was appointed the first Australian Dolby Sound Consultant.

Always there were the puns, delivered with withering speed on the unsuspecting. The Goon Show quotes. The practical jokes, Don loved laughter. Above all there was the generous spirit, a man always prepared to give far more that he was getting. Experience, knowledge, a quick joke, even an emergency blood donation on one overseas trip,  Don was your man. He left an indelible impression on everyone he met. While his contribution to film sound in this country reverberates on, I hope he has found the quietest of locations to rest in peace.

The ASSG would like to put together a further tribute for Don on our website. If friends and colleagues have any stories or photos please email them to admin@assg.org.au

Melbourne Meeting of Production Sound Mixers and Boom Swingers

June 2, 2013 in President's Blog by William Ward

On Sunday there was a meeting of Production Sound Mixers, Boom Swingers, and others interested in all things location. My thanks go to Mark Edwards and Manel Lopez for creating the interest. We had 27 people for the meeting! We have formed a Melbourne committee to look at rates. Is there any interest in the other centres, to maybe contribute towards the idea of an ASSG recommended rate card?

Our major sponsor, Syntec International, is letting ASSG members know they have launched a new website to assist with wireless microphone and IEM frequency information across Australia.

Imagine a device friendly website that was better than an app, one that can be used on a Smart Phone, Laptop, MAC, PC or Tablet.

Mobile friendly to the extent it is thumb-able to use!

You can enter an address, latitude and longitude, a location on a map, or use the real-time GPS system in your mobile device to find what frequencies are available at that location, today and after the DTV re-stack!

It estimates signal strengths and locational information for locations anywhere in Australia, to have at your fingertips any time.

Syntec international has now launched its site at  www.frequencyfinder.com.au

Aussie soundies. This arrived in an email from the ASSG - very interesting.

Another reason to belong...

Message to members from ACETA - Australian Commercial and Entertainment Technologies Association

I’m contacting you to update you about the issue related to wireless audio devices and to invite you to encourage your members to object to the current plan by signing the petition.  http://www.wirelessaudioaustralia.org/

I’m not sure how aware you are about this but here’s a recap:

At the end of next year when Australia moves to using digital spectrum, something like 80% of the wireless audio devices currently in use in Australia will need to be retired.  The government has sold the spectrum they operate in to Telstra and the like, who have all been promised clear space.  That space of course actually isn’t clear currently.  It’s full of wireless audio devices which have a class licence to operate.  The government has unilaterally rescinded that class licence.

Given that this has to happen, not least because it spectrum is now sold for almost $2 billion, the main sticking points are that the government is not planning to tell any of the wireless audio users and is not offering any compensation.  For some reason, they seem to think that only businesses will be affected and that those businesses replace their wireless audio devices every two years, so would have been buying new anyway.  We have been talking to the government for almost six years, but they don’t seem to understand how flawed their thinking is  -  how far and wide this issue will impact the community and that their assumption about the two year horizon on replacement is seriously misplaced. This will affect churches, schools, tour guides, musicians, fitness centres, meeting and conventions, as well as all forms of live production including music, theatre and musical theatre.  Many wireless audio devices used in these communities are a decade old and more.

Can we please ask if you would promote the petition to your members and encourage them to sign it? This petition will be tabled in the Senate when it next sits, which will be after the election. http://www.wirelessaudioaustralia.org/

And to keep up with any news, there is also our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/awagaustralia?ref=hl  We’d recommend your members Like this page to keep in touch with news.

Who are we?  We are ACETA - the Australian Commercial and Entertainment Technologies Association, so we represent the distributors for wireless audio products.   www.aceta.org.au
