Yeah brah I have a 12-track mixer-recorder (eight is for wieners) all Class-C preamps with motorized faders and it records at 6k, like fifty wireless sets, some Comteks signed by James Cameron's assistant, and I pull a generator on a Radio Flyer behind me to charge AA's (also hate downtime!).

LOL @ THIS $200 KINGLY RATE, IM DOING IT FOR $50, AND WE BETTER WORK LONGER DAYS THAN YOU WANT. IM THE SOUND GUY THAT STAYS UNTIL HOUR 24. IM GONNA LIVE AT YOUR HOUSE, DAWG. I normally don't read this thread cause I'm kinda tired of the CL bashing crap however I took a chance today just to see what's up. This post had me cracking up. Thanks!

Michael, I generally agree with the sentiment. However, CL (and its ilk) has become a big part of urban life, and most everyone I know is familiar with it, its expectations and its –for lack of a better word– "ballparks."

 

Whenever I have the time, I make it a point to check it out and replying to posts, usually with a polite explanation of how their low offer will end up biting them in the ass.

 

The main point, however, is that I'm also seeing now on Mandy and, even worse, on paid services such as media-match and filmandtvpro, truly offensive offers for supposedly experienced sound mixers, as well as other professions. I pay monthly for two of these services, to stay informed about possible work opportunities - how do you think I feel when 80% of the jobs I see posted are in the $100-$250 a day range?

 

This is like propaganda: the more these "mickey mouse" rates get posted, forwarded, discussed and repeated, the more they become accepted as the norm. And that's why I think it's important to keep calling attention to them.

 

I totally get that young mixers need to "start somewhere" (you and I were there a few years ago) but these ads now demand equipment levels (eight wireless mics? Four Comteks? Really?!) and experience, which tells me that they're just not aware of what the cost-benefit ratio is or should be.

 

As a matter of fact, I'm in the middle of a thread with a producer who's making a film with two major award-winning celebrities, the DP is supposed to be an Emmy-winning shooter, and they need a mixer for a short day (8 hrs, supposedly) and they only have $175, all in. They even offered to have a "tall and strong grip" to boom (!!) unless I'm willing to boom myself. I was finally able to get her to offer a bit more (still half of what you and I would consider a decent rate) while going on about how they're over budget and how it would be great to work with "Hollywood Royalty" (which I've already done, thankyouverymuch - not that it matters.)

 

Please allow me one more anecdote:

 

A friend just finished filming an indie drama, and they're looking for a mixer/sound designer - while she waited for my call (I'd been on a job) she took somebody's advice and posted an ad on Mandy, and is now deluged with various offers and quotes… The only thing I told her was "make sure you don't hire the guy who'll charge you a thousand dollars, because either he doesn't know WTF he's talking about, or he'll just butcher the film for a quick buck."

 

Sorry for the rant - and thanks for reading this far…

This particular venture is a low budget feautre with heart. We are looking for an experienced Boom Op to work 18 days: from Sept 23rd - Oct 18th.

We have $100/day to offer this time around and we hope to find someone we can all work with and support in the future.

with all those awards in Italy, s/he should hold out for a movie with a budget..?

Is he following in the footsteps of another Italian director Claudio Fragasso who also tried to make his great American feature debut?

 

(If you don't know who Fragasso  is, he was the director behind Troll 2- look it up for more info on that masterpiece).
