If your budget is so low, why are you shooting film? Your uncle owns a lab? And are you planning to edit and dub in a totally analog chain? Have you budgeted enough for 35mm stripe stock? (I hope all your sfx are coming from vinyl discs…)

I think there's only two 35mm labs left in all of LA: Deluxe and Fotokem. But in truth, the costs of developing have gone way down. Dailies are not cheap, but even those are less costly now than they used to be. Even speaking as a long-time Technicolor guy, I see zero advantage in shooting film over shooting reasonable digital for a micro-budgeted indie.

And the last thing they should be doing is cheaping out on the sound department. I always say, "if you can afford a camera operator, an assistant camera operator, a gaffer, and an electrician, then you can afford a sound mixer and a boom op."

The Red guys are screaming about this on the Red User group. If you have a $40,000 camera, the camera alone should rent for $400 a day. Bottom-feeding rates like this hurt everybody.

Granted, you get what you pay for, but there are a lot of neophyte producers who haven't learned that yet, or just don't want to know it.

I emailed them, with some of the same questions, basically "I'm just curious, why you're doing it that way" - predictably, no answer.

Few things are worse than a clueless hipster…

because 4k isn't good enough for this POS

Sure these people are likely misguided about the process and the need for professional services, but stick to what you know, Mike, and avoid the baseless judge mental condemnation of anyone's attempt at filmmaking as "shit" just because you have no creative vision.

You're a tech guy. Be a tech guy. Comment on tech issues. Leave the filmmaking to the artists.

JOB: Sound Engineer / "SOUNDY" on Location.

DATES: January 24th to May 1st, 2014

The formal description is below. However I must say we are a laid back crew, love film and photography, COFFEE, most of us love wine of course, all of us love adventure, extreme sports, travel and FUN! This job has quite a few perks, and the more great people in our crew the better the production! We are looking for someone who is in this for the experience over the paycheck however. We live the dream life and do it with full expenses paid yet you must acknowledge the budget has not been able to afford day rates quite yet!

We have hit 2 countries now and don't plan on stopping. AUSTRALIA (2013) AND NEW ZEALAND (2012). We just filmed 8 episodes around Australia and 2 in New Zealand! You can watch it at "www.wineram.com" to get an idea of what were shooting and even check out the BEHIND THE SCENES episode to get a feel for how YOUR journey will be as part of the crew. We have had guest appearances from judges of MASTERCHEF, we distribute on various formats including web, IPTV, TV and even theatrical cuts for screenings. We need you to be our "soundy" and manage audio on location. You will work closely with the Director, DP and 2nd Camera. We want you to express your creativity and would love if you are in fact PASSIONATE about sound! We are very professional, yet still like to be a laid back run and gun operation where it allows us to operate as a 6 person documentary filmmaking crew! This gig will give you the opportunity to film with:

-Professional Athletes from the Snowboard, Ski, Snowmobile and many other professional winter sports industries.
-Winemakers from the top wineries around the best wine regions of the USA.
-Visit the most beautiful national parks and top destinations of the USA.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION:

WINERAM Productions:
Our first flagship production was "THE WINERAM EXPERIENCE" a six-part travel and wine documentary-film series in New Zealand. This quickly became THE MOST HIGHLY VIEWED WINE DOCUMENTARY ONLINE IN THE WORLD!! From here we already have both IPTV and TV distribution and are growing its reach further in post production now. This held the idea of breaking down the misperception of wine being stuffy or for wine snobs or the rich and showing that even the young and fun can love wine and find it more approachable. We target Generation Y demographic by appealing to them through traveling the countries top tourism destinations and showcasing the natural beauty, and then we go into the nearby wine regions where we meet with professional athletes and see what the local adventure is there and bring winemakers along with us, while afterwords we occasionally take the athletes into the winery to learn about wine. The WINERAM Experience has come to an end, and WINERAM Australia has just finished production around Australia and now we are going to showcase the USA wine industry in a new light; with "WINERAM USA"!

On top of this TV Show/Documentary Series we have also done a feature documentary called VINTAGE on vintage winemaking from a cellarhands perspective which our company also does various Promotional Documentary Films on wineries.

I was about to post that one, Angelo. Unbelievable…

I interviewed for a travel show a couple of years ago, where the conditions were similar. They were happy to benefit from my ability to speak four languages, and my three passports (which made me easy to travel, and an asset to the production) but they had an "all-in" rate of -get this- $500 _PER SHOW_. So, naturally, I asked how many shows were shot in, say, a week; and she said "two to three". When I balked (because, you know, I do have to feed my family) she explained that the mixers they usually hire consider the gig a "paid vacation." It just never ceases to amaze me…

Ain't this the sh@t. A bunch of under 40 carneys jumping from project to project living off somebody's else dime. They share a place to live or still crash at the parents during down times. Might have a low wage job to give them a little something to rub between their fingers, but live for the weekend shoot where everything is happening. They all know what camera and lens they want to shoot their project on, but have no clue what a flag, 1k or a bates plug is and timecode is just something to log the pictures. Where did this business go so wrong at and who really is to blame.

Compensation on this production is ONLY getting all of your COSTS COVERED / FULL EXPENSES PAID ... we will cover thousands of dollars of your costs as our sound engineer

Well, that's not too shabby. Your costs, of course, include

      your professional and health insurance

      your training and experience

      your home

opportunity cost (lost income while you're not available for day-rate gigs)

… and of course your investment/amortization on equipment.

---

Seriously, though: the deal with a lot of these shows is that the producer doesn't pay a cent for hotel / meals / even airfare sometimes. The "thousands of dollars of your costs" is probably at rack rate, not what they're actually paying.

I've had the thrill of sitting in a room mixing an episode of this kind of show, while the producer and host are on the phone behind me deciding where they want free vacations for next season's episodes.

(At least, they were paying me in real money.)

My first mixing job was as a staffer in a production company that made a weekly travel show for a Spanish-language network. Even though production got comped on travel, lodging and some of the meals, I had a decent salary (the gear belonged to production.) What's so different today?!

Is there anything in that ad - anything at all - that explains the graphic?

Is it a show about horticulture? Natural foods? Early articulated-arm iMacs? An episode of "Pushing Daisies"?

Or is it just a random graphic to call attention to the ad?

In that case, CL poster would have done better with porn: say, an artsy shot of a IV-S with the deck plate wide-open, showing off all its attributes...

Beg to differ. Today's video at NYTimes.com about sound designers interviews a couple of notables at Skywalker Sound, who say foley is definitely a -part- of sound design.

Actually, sound design is whatever you want to make it. On some projects, the sound designer does nothing but monster voices and other special effects. On others, it's creative supervision of the entire track (except the scoring). On a few it even includes the scoring.

So the CL poster isn't that far off.

However:

"The pay would $900 half up front the rest after the job is complete."

In other words, you're working for $450. Films are never complete. Particularly self-financed newbie ones.

Good point. In my post workflow I clearly make boundaries between ADR, Foley and Sound Design, but I guess it is a fair statement you make that Sound Design can be anything you want and really cover many areas. I doubt however, that the OP for this ad was aware of such details and making such educated statements as you eloquently make. I did see that NYT video btw and thought it was cool.
