iOS6 and older devices

I did read the posts. So why do people upgrade from 4s? Are you saying there is no advertising campaign pushing for an upgrade? Are you saying that Apple and Google does not restrict new software technology on older phones? Hackers has shown over and over again that new Apple and Google technologies work on old phones. So IMHO YES! Apple and Google does artificially restrict older phones making you buy a new ones.

In all fairness, it takes effort to port new technology to old devices, hacker or not. Every device is different in small but numerous ways. Those variations mean different code paths for each device. So supporting multiple older devices could mean writing multiple versions of code for each feature you want to add. This is especially true for Android phones and is the reason why it takes so long for some older devices to get new versions of Android. Even hackers haven't created a stable port of Ice Cream Sandwich for the HTC EVO (which is a wildly popular phone still). The iPhone 3G uses a completely different processor architecture than any phone after it. It is not surprising that Apple wants to stop supporting it.

Going back to the original question, the problem here is not that the users are forced, but that the developers are being forced to drop support for the older OSes (and hence older devices), so while "Foo 1.00" worked on an ipod touch 2nd gen and iPhone 3G, "Foo 2.00" with its added support for the iPhone 5 screen has to drop support for those products. There is no way in Apple's eco system to download the older version. so unless you already purchased "Foo 1.00", there is no way you'll get it once "Foo 2.00" is released.

The only way for a developer to continue to serve older customers who don't see the need to upgrade their hardware just to run the latest version of their favorite $0.99 apps is to maintain an older machine with an older xCode installation (which is going to be harder and harder to find, Apple will drop those from their pages some time). The rules constantly change, so I wouldn't be supprised if they refused App updates in the future which added features but didn't add iPhone 5 screen size support. Currently they added a rule that if you say the app is iPhone 5 compliant, you have to have iPhone 5 screen shots to go with it - automatically forcing all developers to purchase an iPhone 5 instead of just simulating it.

For Mac development here, I keep an image of OS X 10.6.8 and the last xCode that runs on that OS for building apps that don't rely on new OS features.

Note that here: you could have purchased an iPhone 3G less than a month ago, and now find yourself locked in for 1-2 years, during which time all of the apps you thought you'd use are going to be not available for it because they are being updated for iPhone 5, and thus have to drop support for 3G.

If that isn't "being forced to upgrade", I don't know what is.

Tom.

Ok, that thread is just wrong. You guys have to start distinguishing between iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. They are wildly different phones. The 3G does not support iOS 5 or 6 or even "iOS 4.3". The 3GS is still supported by all apple releases and apps (with obvious hardware related restrictions). The 3G is not being sold any more. It was discontinued in 2010. The 3GS has only just been discontinued and therefore suppliers are trying to sell off remaining units.

Mu friend has a jailbreaked 3gs and he is running siri. Why do you think apple does not want to release siri for 3gs or 4g officially? IMHO they are saying : if you want siri upgrade your phone...

Siri is an online service provided by Apple. There is no hardware requirements for it. The hacker simply fooled the Apple servers into thinking that the 3GS was an iPhone 4S. Basically Apple wanted a new feature to release with its otherwise incremental 4S, so it said: we'll give all 4S purchasers a free subscription to our online service. As far as I am aware, that is the only time Apple has deliberately kept a feature from its older devices when it took little to no extra effort or hardware requirements to provide it.
