I heard an interesting story about why Apple patents everything under the sun these days. I forgot about this, but Creative sued the hell out of Apple when the iPod hit because they got a patent for "portable device that plays digital music files". In the end Apple had to pay Creative $100 million to settle it, and Steve Jobs vowed not to let that happen again. That was an absolute case of Creative getting a vague patent through. While Creative was actually making an MP3 player, they kind of sucked once something else came out. That was Apple's "ok, I guess this is how tech companies compete now" moment. Ever since then, Apple engineers have had monthly meetings with lawyers to show their latest work and to see if anything needs to be protected.
